Maybe I'm a sad nerd but that was honestly quite intriguing.

Another interesting fact about Colonia. The first station there, Jaques, is owned and operated by a sentient cyborg, named Jaques (the only sentient AI in ED, I believe). It was he who decided to quit the bubble, and make a long jump with his station to somewhere else (Beagle Point I think but my memory is fuzzy). There was a big Community Goal to deliver enough hydrogen fuel to Jaques station to make the jump.
But, during the jump, there was a malfunction or attack of some kind, no one is quite sure, and Jaques was lost, somewhere in the black. People were waiting for him to arrive, having flown all the way out there to witness it. But he never showed up.
Some months later, though, someone (Commander Cly) found him out there in the void, because they had set their Galaxy Map to show only populated systems and one showed up where it shouldn't have been.
After that, there were CG's to deliver meta alloys to repair the station.
And that was the start of Colonia (it got renamed to Colonia later).
The Wiki has some facts you might find interesting, also.
