Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

What actually happened here? Why did you not buy?

5bnCR is over half my amassed credits. That aside, I'm not sure I want to be hassled with upkeep and then there's that acquisition of tritium - and I know nothing of that. Do you need to mine 500 tons to fully fuel your FC? All stuff I need to asess before spending such a chunk of cash.

And on top of that, it's equipping it. Again, I haven't really looked into it other than the Yamiks first vid on them where he said it would take 25bnCR a year or something.

All in all, a big step for me and one I'm not sure I want nor can afford. Or can I? Not that I'm stuck on the fence or anything :D

Couple of things I read on here. Upkeep is chicken feed. Can be covered by a simple bit of exploring and cashing in the UC. It's like 25m a week if you're maxed out, so I read. Earning 25m in one week is easy, anyway you choose to do it.

The biggest eye opener was that someone on here told me an FC can do 60,000ly from a full tank. So, you head out somewhere, even 10,000, you can easily get back to a system to buy the fuel, rather than mine it.

I'm, at 3.7dn credits. I'm in no rush but I reckon, I'll get to 5.5bn and buy one. If it all goes wrong and I don't like the burden, I can decommission it and get my 5bn back and maybe I sunk 100m into upkeep and other stuff. 100m is really, again, nothing.

I'm not trying to talk you into it but when I read the above on here, it altered my thinking from no thanks to, hmmmm, maybe.

Thanks for the tips. Do you happen to know if, when you buy one, it comes with a full tank?

Did a brief bit of research and it looks my credit balance is sufficient for a nicely kitted out FC. What I need to find out is the cost of these "packs" you can purchase for ships and modules and the like.

ooh! I feel I have a Guardian unlock evening in my near future... haven’t done much research on that yet.
have also been thinking about finally stopping for a battle, and maybe souping up the old Cobra (and giving it a name!) would be a good intro? Had been thinking of acquiring an iEagle for a bit of affordable combat practice, but perhaps dusting off the little one in the hangar is the way to go?

For small combat I like my Courier, little bit bigger than the iEagle (I have an iEagle but it's built for speed rather than fighting), still gives me that dog fight experience, rebuy isn't too bad if things go wrong, and it has a decent hull/shield for its size.

The Guardian unlocking went pretty well, can recommend it - got three module blueprints and a lot of the Guardian tech bits you need to unlock them, getting fighter blueprints this evening. It is kind of addictive.

It doesn't - it has two on the underside.

I would rather take an AspX or DbX for Guardian farming - those missiles hurt. 👽

Lol yes, I knew that it had utility slots, and why I'd need them, but forgot to check whereabouts on the ship they were. (Seems a bit daft that there isn't a topside one.) The SRV took a few missile hits, I got away with it and got my first blueprint with 38% hull. Had two SRVs with me so scooped the other materials with that. Fortunately we were operating out of a squadron carrier, so I was able to swap the Cobra out for subsequent runs. I took the Phantom and it was altogether much less stressful. A while back when I did the FSD booster I used a T6. But thank you for the thought - wish I had read this post before I took the Cobra! Still love the ship, though, now my main mats gatherer/small mission runner.

I think if you have a use for it in your gameplay then the upkeep cost in the new economy really isn't an issue. Personally, I am using a carrier a lot when working with a squadron (we have three and theyre very useful when expanding into a system without a large station, or without friendly stations) but for my personal gameplay I just wouldn't use it so am not getting a private one.

Lots of cheap (40kcr) fuel at T'u Tu system Homer station.
I found a golden goose FC and sold over 200m cr to it, owed by the 42nd Mostly Harmless squad.
There cr'ds are now my cr'ds. Many thanks....
I wonder what happened to the other 41 Mostly Harmless squadron's....bloody massacre I guess. 🤔👾🐬

The IEagle was so cheap, I bought one and dumped it in the garage immediately as I headed out on the PalinTrek. But who knows, maybe I’ll get a Courier too when I get back!
But your Guardian fun almost makes me want to turn back at the start...

My experience with the FC has been very positive. Upkeep is negligible, really, assuming you are playing the game at all. I have a UC, plus Repair and Armory, which is all I need for exploration. My upkeep is under 12 million per week.

I make way more than that just from my exploration discoveries. Plus I've been doing some casual mining the past 2 weeks and have collected 500+ tons of LTDs, and some VOpals and Painite too. I can sell that for at least 1 million per ton, probably more. Credits don't seem to be an issue.

Also, if you get one and decide it's not for you, you lose almost nothing. When you uninstall a service you get the entire cost back. When you decommission the carrier you get most of that back too. There's very little risk.

For me it's opened up a whole new way of playing. It's just fun, and kind of awesome. I really feel like a big shot when I return from my daily explore or mining run and see my carrier there waiting for me.

So I say take the plunge! It's easy enough to back out later if need be. But I'm guessing you'll love it as much as I do.

Edit: PS about fuel. You can buy it for under 5k per ton in the bubble. In Colonia it's more like 30k. Fuel lasts a long time, depending on how often you jump. I went all the way to Colonia and back and burned about 18,000 tons, so about 90 million creds. For 44,000 ly of travel. In the bubble you won't even notice fuel costs.

Thanks for that! I'm very tempted now. Going to chew on it for a wee while ;)
