Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Went mining. Needed to replenish materials I'd used up for synthesis, recoup costs of FC upkeep from the past few weeks and generally add to the coffers of greed.

I've also - finally - got all systems running in my new cockpit. I'd struggled with cabling lengths and screen positioning but it fees comfy now:

Yeah, I still consider the Cobra Mk III to be my primary ship but I've often found dogfights to be drag while trying to rank up. They can really stretch out (I use beams and MC). Particularly if you have a target who likes to high wake. I would probably use the Krait these days for killing pirates and the like.

I also wonder if long range beams, rather than overcharged, would be more helpful with the Cobra too, based on what I think Quain and a couple of others may have said.
I might have a little jump back into the game while I'm off though, just to take a look at the viper as a small ship alternative. I've just not really fancied anything besides the Cobra. It always served me well as a runner to get me from here to there and out of scary situations while packing at least a little punch to it. The Viper looks nice though. Although I see the Mk IV doesn't have a Union Jack colour scheme so that may be an unfortunate dealbreaker.
Long range beams is perfect on the Corvette - 2 medium and 1 large. The Corvette has a big fat class 8 power distributor that is grade 5 charge enhanced with super conductors. It can handle it and it's not fast or agile enough to get close to targets quickly, so time to kill is best with long range beams and engaging targets as far as 4.5km away. Gimbled beams "jitter" too much to be very effective at longer range than that.
My Krait has 2 large efficient beams as its a faster ship more able to get closer (inside 1500m) and face targets. My alt account uses 2 large long range beams on a Phantom, but that commanders fighting style is more snipe from a distance and get out of there. I have been thinking that I could use one efficient and one overcharged beam laser on the Krait II because I think it has the power distributor capacity to handle it. Personally I would not do both beams overcharged as that goes over my target of keeping all weapons firing with 2 pip to weapons for at least 6 to 7 seconds, which according to coriolis gives you the fastest kill time.
If I was putting beam lasers on a fast, agile ship with a smaller power distributor e.g. a Cobra MKIII, I would use efficient beam lasers.
As a guide, long range beam lasers and efficient beam lasers have the same damage output at 1500m. Consider the range at which a specific ship is at from its target most of the time in the fight to pick which is best. Also considering power distributor draw.

Based on the chair, I'd postulate that there's rum in the baby fridge.

Woah, that was a close call. Good job you went mining for some more credits. You're down to you last 13 and a bit billion there.... :ROFLMAO:

Oh, and I want your chair :p

Other people's setups always look so neat. I've got wires and papers and used paper plates and napkins and eye drops and nail files and hand lotion and a couple toothpicks and some torn paper on my desk.

But, grats on the keen new setup!

------------------
Took my first Alt out on an Apex tour, looking for G3 equipment. Found G3 Maverick and Dominator, and a G2 Maverick with Night Vision, and a G3 Karma L6 so far. Only G1 on the Intimidator and Tormentor, but I'll keep looking.

:)

As I am sure you know tomorrow just after the tick is the best time to find such things.

Oh Marv you didn't know - you haven't been abrading your HOTAS..?

I, CMDR rupee noon, am concluding a rich CEO's personal survey of local nebulae. Our complete circuit was to Barnard's Loop, the Jellyfish, Seagull, Thor's Helmet, Rosette, Monkey's Head, and Crab. Mmm and there must be some tartar sauce in all this interstellar medium. And the in-flight entertainment was 1960s surf music

Long range beam is highly recommended. It is the only mod I used on all my lasers it give full damage all the to your target up 6km depending on the grade, for me G3 at around 4km is enough. You can add either thermal vent or oversize on it. I have thermal vent on majority of my beams. I'm a huge fan of LR/TV beam. 🔫

Another beam mod that I like more and more is Lightweight. It keeps the same dps as an non modded beam, but drops around 90% of the mass. That is important if you want to build an agile ship. Agile ships also allow you to get much closer to the opponent, which in most cases minimize the problem with range. Lightweight also reduce power draw (less heat generated) and the distributor draw (keep the trigger pressed for longer times). It is one of the mods i skipped earlier, but it's brilliant for smaller ships, like the Cobra.

Thanks. I'm making note of these suggestions for when I jump back in.

I like both the long range and lightweight options and can see benefits to both regardless of ship class. I think the best thing to do is get straight into combat scenarios and get a refresher on how I tend to use small and medium ships (I've been out for a while). I just wouldn't want to rush things and waste mats on re-engineering before I have a solid idea of what works best for me.

Honestly I don't think it matters that much.

Stuff gets repopulated on the tick, sure, but then it stays until someone buys it.

From what I can tell, the game isn't that busy and the stuff just hangs around in the Pioneer shops, unbought.

Anyway I've been finding good stuff, just by going whenever I have time to burn. :)

Mine is similar plus a pile of stuffs recently used but too lazy to put back to its place... Glad I'm not alone lulz.

Oh Marv you didn't know - you haven't been abrading your HOTAS..?

Remind me of my sore palm after dancing around Elite Conda in Viper... pretty much the only things I do in the recent nights.
I don't have one. I fly mouse and keyboard. For now.
Holy molly.....!!! But then Alex Kamal comes into my mind. He fly Rocinante with mouse and iPad O7 😅
