Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Again, running back and forth over and over again for materials that aren't used at all doesn't serve a purpose. Why store that which is never going to be used? I have searched but can't find any information on if they can be traded or used for anything else at all.

Nothing in here to help?

There certainly seems to be an awful lot of stuff that isn't actually used.

(I have not done any Odyssey Engineering so know nothing about this.)

All on-foot mats including data can be sold at station bartenders, as can goods (illegal ones require you to be on an station controlled by an Anarchy faction). All non-data items can be traded at bartenders. Carrier bartenders only buy/sell what the carrier owner has specified. There is a search function for FC bartender mats on Inara but, especially when looking to buy, there's no guarantee what you want will be there when you arrive! As the search says, check the last update time.

This list is unbelievably useful: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-engineering-cheat-sheet.583994/

Hope this helps 🙂

It's a bit of a mess, actually. Some things can be traded for other things at the Bartender, and I made a lot of use of that for certain things where it was easy to get the lower level stuffs. Some things can only be sold. Some things are needed for engineer unlocks, so you don't want to sell them until you get the invite (selling them before you get the invite will NOT count).

I used this site a lot when trying to figure out what to keep, what to trade up, and what to just sell.

The problem is that there are a LOT of components, and many have no use. But, some that have no use can be traded for stuff that does. So, you kinda gotta figure out what you're going for (upgrades or mods), see what stuff you need for that, and then make your decisions. It requires quite a bit of clicking around to figure it all out.

Also you will run out of space even in your ship inventory if you don't trade stuff up, and micromanaging it is a pain, but that's what we have.

And yes, extra backpack space is nice to have in your maverick when you're in collecting mode. You can also park an SRV nearby and put stuff into there (just be aware that scavs who show up may attack your SRV -- they can destroy it but anything you've stored is still safe).

The design of the on-foot Storage is...underwhelming shall we say? :)

I just found an ELW and WW where the WW (marked with the red circle) orbits inside the orbit of the ELW. I don't think I'm going to top this find, so I'm going to end my exploration on this expedition on a high. I might try a spot of laser mining tritium tomorrow just to see how long it takes to get 50t.

I have never mined that far out, but if when I do I probably will avoid doing that because I don’t want to learn new ‘bad’ habits. It’s a bit like waiting to jump a Dolphin until it would be safe in a normal ship because if I got into the habit of starting the jump as soon as I was lined up I would cook one of my other ships by mistake.
I understand completely. Cooking my ships is one of my specialties...

You guys seems to enjoy playing Odyssey, I read little about bugs which is a good thing, so do you think it is worth getting?

Also in terms of interaction with other players, I mean support, trade etc, not foot soldier stuff, which I'm not really into, is there enough in the game itself to justify playing Odyssey?

I had a miserable time playing Star Citizen precisely because of the bugs, that's why I haven't considered getting Odyssey yet but I might join the club.

Anyway, I'll be halfway to Athair IM-W f1-1841in a couple of jumps, I'll do a much more complete exploration of neighbouring systems and planets, most probably around Preia Phio LC-C d3, which is listed as Pristine by the Fleet Carrier Router, meaning there should be a source for mining Tritium there.

Although I'm not planning to mine it (I have more than enough on board), there might be other materials I'm interested in... I'll post a detailed scan of what I'll find there.

I wasn't sure because of the bad press I read when it first came out and the fact that I just uninstalled Star Citizen at the time, I can't really deal with so many in-game bugs...
From what I understand, it was a mess when it first came out. I actually didn't buy it at first because of that. It wasn't until I realized most of the complaints I saw were well over a year old and that the guys on the forum were saying it was good that I actually bought it.

So we came to the same conclusion at the time. I learned the hard way with Star Citizen which could be a hell of a game if the developers weren't taking the mickey, last time I checked I only had one ship out of 4 remaining, the rest were erased with a reset...

I'm thinking about upgrading my Carrier first with Optional Services useful to other players then upgrade the game when I'm ready.

Thanks for your reply!

TL DR - I like it...

Odyssey is definitely worth it to me. To echo what @Marvin the Martian said, it adds an entirely new dimension to the simulation.

I do like the shooty bits but haven't actually done any of that since before U13. But there's more to do in settlements than just shoot NPCs.

Many mission require stealth to steal things or assassinate someone, which can be done with the Charging Tool instead of a weapon. One of the most thrilling moments for me so far has been zapping someone in a corridor without firing a single shot or setting off the alarms and just walking out of the settlement back to my ship like it was any other day...

Beyond that, there's several kinds of missions, some delivery/pickup, some finding things at wrecks or downloading data.

A good way to hunt for pre-upgraded gear is going to a large system with many stations and planetary ports (not settlements) and hopping on an Apex taxi to visit all of them on Thursday's after the tick. I'm not keen on engineering grind and haven't upgraded or modified any suits/weapons yet. But I can be competitive in High Ground CZs with G3 as purchased gear. It just requires a more tactical approach than simply going in and just blasting everything with OP gear.

Exobiology adds to the amount of cash one can get out of a newly discovered system. Bounties for all first finds are doubled when you turn them in at Vista Genomics. IE: A single body with 4 biologicals can net over 2 mil depending on which specific biologicals are there. Not the best money vs. time ratio, but that hardly matters to me.

I've never been much of a fan of FPS style games in general, but I have played a few, mostly before 2002 or so. I find the FPS in Odyssey to be easy to approach and fun with the difficulty scaling based on the activity/threat level. Going into somewhere with a few friends to either turn off or restore power in a settlement is a blast.

Also, ALL odyssey missions are shareable...so no need to look for wing specific missions if one plays with friends.

All in all I find it relaxing and fun. I'm not in any hurry to finish the game and there are things, both in space and on foot, that I haven't done yet in the 2 years and 3000+ hours I've been playing.

The UI takes some getting used to. It is a big change from Horizons. But I haven't been in Horizons since roughly two weeks or so after Odyssey launched, the first few patches were really needed to get the bug count down.

Bugs: Yeah there are bugs which can mostly be worked around and the work arounds are not too bad, just extra steps in most cases. IE: Selling into a fleet carrier requires selling twice before the stuff is actually moved off your ship; the flight model is a little sluggish until you turn off Rotation Correction...

Everyone has their own opinion of Odyssey and yes, there are some small bugs. However, I find the gameplay totally engrossing. It really adds to what you can do.

When it first dropped. the optimisation was terrible and even DBOBE had to post an apology. Now, things are much better. BUT! Even though it is better, it isn't ideal and you will need some good specs on your rig to get smooth graphics and you may have to drop some settings to help.

Also... there's another learning curve to er, learn. On-foot missions require practice but that's what we're here for - we can offer advice.

So, to cut a long story short (no, no the Spandau song :D ) yes, IMHO Ody is well worth the purchase.

I'm 64 jumps away from Morgan's Rock now and about 2200LY from Sol. I'm quite surprised at the number of undiscovered systems I've come across on this route when I'm still this close to the bubble, but I've found quite a few now.

I've just landed on a planet that has 3 biological and 2 geological. Found some Fumarola, which I guess are so-called because they love to infest those poor old fumarole thingies.

Thanks guys for your infos!

Exploration of Preia Phio LC-C d3 started well. My Codex have been updated twice already, made a few imporant discoveries, now I'm gonna fit the SRV and have a look at those signals, and I haven't mapped the Ice Ringed planet yet.

Enjoy that while it last. You don't get those in Odyssey. You actually have to go out and find the materials yourself with your naked eyes.
