Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I have noticed a different approach from the pirates in asteroid belt clusters / planetary rings...
They seem to come in wings, these days, one being the obvious leader that does the talking/scanning/raiding action and two or three that just bring their guns to dissuade any form of resistance. And thes do not leave after the initial scan of your empty cargo hold , they patrol the area around you. I do not know if they would pounce once you start collecting stuff from mining, as I have the automated crime report system active which prompted some system authority vessels to pay a visit and drive off the pirates.
They do start harass you as your cargo hold fills up.

I know that because they harass me when I picked up some escape pods from the ships I destroyed. Of course, they have picked the wrong guy to mess with, some lucky bad boys ended up in escape pods lol.

So, what the heck are they and why are they taking so long to get here? Any thoughts, ideas or rumors
The prevailing theory is that they are Thargoid installations like the ones we’re familiar with, and they will land and deploy, creating a reverse Proteus wave in the systems they choose. This will render Guardian tech inoperative like in HIP 22064. Then, before we can drive them off we’ll have to disable the installations, possibly on foot.

Personally I have no clue and don’t expect anything that big.

Some more escape pods for you, a win-win scenario... kinda.
My 16 Tons has to rely on the authorities' quick response teams - no shields, no weapons and I can only hope to be fast enough to run from them, should the need arise...

I have no experience on the matter, but wouldn't one expect that be the case?
Dunno. It just feels like some are out to get your blood - naturally - but others want to take that blood, stamp your body into a pancake, chop you into bits and then throw the blood back all over you. Just my perception... :D

Anyway.

That's one of the biggest advantages of a fleet carrier - you can mine out in the black with complete autonomy. There's literally nobody with thousands of light years to bother you.

On-foot NPC's - has anyone experienced some being more agressive than others?
If you walk in something military-related, ppl do seem to be kind of more devoted there. Also these new protect canisters missons, it's rly a pressure, due to their numbers + they're focused on one little area (missions are team, but nothing stops you from soloing em except of that it can be quite hard). Otherwise, what i've just had in mind, could that be that it's due to many of them - again - focused on a small area? Like, you have this resto mission and you see another 6 incoming in a dropship - taking position, shooting some from the distance, nothing special. Or, you missed that dropship, you get out of the PWR just to see their six faces and they shot at you right away. All of the above from my modest on foot xp though. But i agree, sometimes you come at base and you're facing a pair, then another couple, then some more. And another time it's a bee hive right away.
My mission is to get the mats to put night vision of my grade 3 Maverick suit.
Have you checked engi req? I don't know your Ody progress but i thought you started not that long ago with on foot engi. Night Vision was at the very end of Bubble engi chain, i. e. you need to unlock all Bubble engi for that (or go to Colonia). And mats for Night Vision are easy yeah...
The gun is so inaccurate that it takes 200 rounds to kill someone unless you're about 20 meters away. The rocket launcher is essentially useless as well. The only thing it's really good for is it's armor. It will get you out of trouble without getting you killed. That's the only thing it has going for it, really.
It's not that bad, even if bullets are indeed wandering around in a little cone. First time when i saw it, i was also quite unimpressed. But still, it works quite well. And rockets are quite good, two shots kills most of the stuff (the amount of rockets is a weak point here, not their damage). Any time i can afford bringing two SRVs, i take Scorpion. It also handles differently. After all SRV is a recon vehicle (finding out what awaits you there in that base or changing your position) + anti-scav tool, it's not an assault tank. In fact i like a lot the fact that you're landing, and then you pick one or another for a reason, or just because you want to drive this one today, same as with the ships.

This is my first attempt to engineer something for personal equipment, and I'm frustrated by not finding missions offering surveillance log rewards.
Now I'm even more disheartened to learn the only engineering mod I have an interest in right now means 100+ hours of grinding my way through other mat collection, upgrades and whatever hoops those engineers want me to jump through.
At this point, I give up. Night vision would be a nice to have QoL upgrade, but I'm not going through all that to get it.
I shall get back to adding to my ship based combat rank 😁

Thank you very much for the heads up 👍

Last time I went mining pirate numbers and how long they hung around was variable, the duration was never usually longer than it took me to find a really good rock to mine but if there was an NPC miner about they would go an hassle them for a while.

The only thing interesting about Cleveland, Ohio is when the river catches on fire.

You can see the smoke and flames for miles.
I thought they had fixed that decades ago.

It's a long slog, for sure.

I enjoyed every minute of it myself. It was some of the most fun I've had in the game.

But if you don't like the on-foot gameplay, then there's little point in pursuing it.

I knew it. They are ancient technology that is even older than the Guardians and Thargoids...

No doubt about that.

I think, for the time being I will stick to mining in systems with an allied presence.

Well, yeah, it all may sound quite long and everything, but it's not that bad if you don't focus on that when you don't want to. Just gather mats when you feel like doing Ody stuff. Only grade of suit really matters, so you need your G3 and then - Power Regulators, MIs and Suit schematics that will make these little steps to perfectness of G5, as a long term goal. If you feel like - go build Crafting Lists for suits and weapons (+ mods) you want to have at some point - and remember what is required. Chances are that at some point you'll want to do Ody missions - and if so, you'll know what you need to make your equipment even better.

Grinding for it isn't worth it, from my point of view, you either plan ahead on everything, spend time and do crafting lists, and at any time you feel like doing Ody content, you try to focus on these items, or easy way - you will in any case need those Opinion Polls (or Culinary Recipes), Power Regulators, MIs and Suit (Weapon) schematics again - any time you're in Ody - get em.

It's a long slog, for sure.

Ye, and it's nice when it's the thing you want to do now. I was quietly doing Ody stuff in the Bubble, and i was happy and not caring much, before i ventured in Colonia and discovered that i don't need SDPs on my way to perfectness there. Then what, i needed a dozen of Power Regulators and a little pile of other things asap to make it reasonably successful. It took a while. And i can say, i've done Night Vision on 3 (or 4) of my suits. But i don't think i remember how to turn it on, as i thought i'm taking a little break after that. So no grind if possible. But, knowing what is required for what is good, just in case.
