What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

I'm trying to make an rufous hornero (ovenbird) nest. They are super common in the country side arround here. You usually see them over fence posts like this one or on electric cables poles as well, even on houses or trees. I'm not sure i like this version enough though but i can't really find good small round pieces with the right texture for it.

Hereby an update of the progress in my zoo.

Asia (7,8, 10-12) is getting closer to being finished and also Africa (1-6) and South America (13-17) start to get its form. 9 will most likely become the Australian section

Enter Asia and discover all the unique fauna we are housing from Asia

The climbing structure on the Gibbon Island starts to get its form

The indoor exhibit for the Lar gibbons. Still a WIP, so more foliage and climbing features will be added

Thanks both! Close-up it isn't looking that good, but when you zoom out, you don't see a thing of it
The trick is to just forget about it and you will hardly notice the close up effect anymore. I do this all over my zoo with plaster filling in lots of gaps that paths leave when making curves or plazas. People think I'm really good with paths but secretly my trick is using plaster pieces to make plazas look better.

I've been having some vague inspirations for a new ape/primate house (probably like the seventh idea I try). While I liked the original one, I think it resembles a European zoo too much. I also wanted something more dynamic looking and less square. Mostly, I wanted something that looks zoo-ish, i.e. having a lot of faux natural elements while still feeling like a building that you could realistically encounter in a (Southeast-Asian) zoo. I went through some Indonesian zoos in Google Maps and practiced with some rock designs and made a start of some aviaries, hoping it will come together somewhat organically.

It'll be combined to the entrance of the walkway I made earlier (and remade three times), as well as some staff-only parts of the building that will go around the complex. It's partly based on Ragunan Zoo's primate centre and the Asian elephant indoor area at the Rotterdam Zoo.

Thanks for the tips! With these the "outside" part of the zoo starts to get its form. Since it will be a small zoo, there will only be a small parking area for tour buses. They can drop the people of in front of the zoo, after which they can park at the small parking lot.

At the entrance there will be a small spot for eating/drinking/toilet stop and also a giftshop. The open area on the right will be partly used for the Australian area and in the future maybe a themed section "Ice Age".

I can hear the guests now:

😡 “African Wild Dog habitat has loads of plants in it.”

But for real that looks so good. Nice job.

I figured you can work around the plants percentage requirements by stretching the null barriers outside the habitat, onto a possibly plant-less area. As the habitat total area gets larger the percentage goes down. That way you can put more plants without loosing welfare points 🙂

There are other methods too but that one proved easiest for me. 🙂

Lovely exhibit Jelboo! I always love the amount of details people can put into their exhibits. Still lets me see I have enough things I can improve on.

For the realism effect in my zoo, I'm adding houses just outside the zoo for the background. Think I did a pretty decent job here!

Did some Christmas morning building. I put some time in the backstage area for the staf. Credits to Marvin for his assets!

Also with the houses and even apartment buildings the background also starts to look like something. Still a lot of work there, but it is getting there.

Think this is by far the largest and most detailed zoo I've ever done. The work in progress you can see at the bottom is where the Australian section will be. It will be containing three exhibits and four terrariums. The fenced off area will be for Emus, Red kangaroos and Red-necked wallabys. Bottom left I will be getting Wombats and a part of the area on the right will be used for an Dingo exhibit.

Merry Christmas everybody!
