What do you miss from Alpha/Beta?

Many annoyances about the gane kept getting a lot better actually. I really liked the iterative development attempt, as it seemed to work out well in the end.

But at the same time, all the really wonderful, marvellous things about the game are being destroyed with every iteration of the game. Biggest concerns:

- Graphics.
I really understand David's obsession with getting it as realistic as possible. But man: Space, the Cockpit, some graphic effects - it all looked SO much better back then! The asteroids looked better, they were so much more closer to each other, there was even colorful (!) nebula in the background, which gave the environment some distinctive looks! I know, there's still some out there presumably, but for the sake of realism, most of it was removed. With the result of 95% of the systems really looking alike now (apart from the planetary background of course).

I also cannot remember of LOD problems in beta. It happens from time to time, that while boosting and quickly applying heavy pitch that enemy vessels pop up with the wrong LOD textures applied. It hey takes about half a second to reload these. Kind of ugly, shouldn't be happening. Happens in stations too, when looking through the mail slot. Not always, but regularly. I'm not playing this game on a toaster neither. The hardware should not be the issue here. This never happened to me in beta.

It's not always a good idea of to replace distinctiveness with plain nothing, just for the sake of making a game (and this is still just a game after all) more 'realistic', which kind of leads to my next, biggest issue of the game, when compared to alpha/beta:

- Sound effects:

When my Eagle was released from the landing pad, floating above it with my engines in idle, it sounded like a bund of jackhammers hammering on metal plates. Applying thrust and hitting the afterburner made it sound like trying to keep your grip on a leash that hold a pack of angry screaming predators on the loose.

My Sidewinder (even though being the most basic ship) sounded like a tie fighter on steroids: this high pitched, oscillating roaring... How I miss it!!

Firing up a Viper engine sounded like it was gargling a mixture of gasoline and pebbles.. And my beloved Cobra made the subtle yet distinctive and low-pitched sound of a mammoth.. I guess, I don't know how they sounded, really.

There's still different engine sounds for every ship, but it's only 20% of what it was before. They all sound the same in the mid tones really. Differences are noticeable, but only a fraction of what it was before. Sound was and still is getting worse. Don't believe me? Look for old alpha/beta footage of elite dangerous on whatever reputable video broadcasting portal. Click play, Close your eyes and listen to the engines of a simple sidewinder being revved up. Listen to the sound of a beam laser ripping through a vessel's hull. Listen to an Eagle, being brought up to speed, boosting, or a Viper..

Yeah Yeah, the good old days. I'm not particularly audiophile, but you gotta agree: its one heck of a difference, that's not really hard to spot.

I miss they very idea that there would be an Iron Man mode in a game that was going to be Dangerous... Talk of a wipe... wonder what the game is like now to start off in s stock sidewinder with a fistful of sweet FA off to pay for fuel and fish.

This, so much this. I miss the deep pounding of the pulse lasers, the, err, amazing sounds of the Multicannons, the beautiful frost on the cockpit when running cold.. I sometimes watch Isinona's videos to go back to that. I hope the devs reimplement SOME of those things.

Overheating if you weren't paying attention before a jump. Remember if you looked away before hyperpsace that the heat would just go up an up. That was cool. It made entering super cruise and hyper space exciting. No way would you be posting on the forum.

Yes multicannons need to sound and fire like guns not pebbles!

I miss:

- The general lack of whine threads on every possible imaginary slight, bug, broken mechanic or whatever else happens to be stuck in their nappies at the moment.
- The lack of pointless polls on all of the above, and then some.
- The lack of pointless petitions on all of the above, and then some.
- The relative lack of trolls and other maladjusted social deviants who delight in pestering the newbies these days.
- The rarity of 'I quit!' rant threads by people who keep playing after their dramatic interwebz tirade over whatever made them mad enough to faux-quit in the first place.
- All of the interesting variations on weapons that would occasionally show up, but were yanked right before release.
- Bobblehead!

:D

yea what this guy said! I cant help but feal a drop of dispare every now and then when I look back at what we had and what we've got :(

so much has become a weak watered down. Grit removed pads added to corners so the kids dont poke there eyes out. Kiss it better, kind of bland and sanatised meh. Its like it was the wild west and now its walmart. Im shure I will get over ot as more content eventualy comes back but I will always remember how awsome high impact multis were and coming up against cannon vipers and actualy feeling scared!

I miss not being able to play because I wasn't a beta backer. Drooling at YouTube videos, wishing I had a spare 2 thousand pounds or whatever crazy figure it was that made me go 'i guess I better wait for Christmas..
'

All of this, combined with the excitement of the future and the assumption that the DDF was almost golden (ok i admit perhaps unfairly ;) )

the increased collision damage for hitting the station.

Playing in open and not once (ok admittedly after we got out of the 5 system lock in) seeing anyone who I was not happy to have in my instance.

but even after the content reality check, ED is still my most treasured game so its not all bad :)

not much i can miss, because the game is much foward than it was then lol

but i liked droppin out of hyperspace, and not being in supercruise automatically lol

also droppin was always making your shift spin around crazily until it fix itself....

one last thing, in beta 2 i loved the supercruise music , that seems had a shift once we had beta 3... idk , but the theme had slightly changed

I miss my friends. We used to have such small areas to play in that you were always meeting people and nice people at that. No-one combat logged, we all took our beatings and moved on. It was a great learning experience. Now I hardly see anyone.
