A friend recommended ED to me. I mostly did exploration. Larry Niven style, Jack Brenan (before Brenan Monster) and Louise Wu when he travels out just to get away from things. I enjoy the relaxing aspect of exploration. Its nice after a stressful day. Since then of course I have done more than exploration. I very much enjoy it.
Edit: And Fredick Pohl's Gateway series... definitely an inspiration for my style in ED.
Yes, when players talk about grind I assume they haven't played WoW through multiple expansions... grind for a year just to have a new expansion released making all your grinding efforts worthless and start all over. ED is grindy only as much as you make it. If I got as sour as Navigare Necesse Est I certainly would not be wasting my time on this game.
Any game where I have exhausted the content and replayed repeatedly multiple times with no new interesting outcomes becomes boring and grindy. I don't think it is valid to complain about a game I got over 100 hours out of. And I wouldn't play a game for 100+ hours if I didn't enjoy it. Best to move on and remember the good times. Maybe occasionally revisit.

That's pretty interesting, I actually played for 2 years as a loner, pushing the grind of earning credits and unlocking all the engineers... I can agree that this game has a heavy grind, then again... I come from games like Eve Online and World of Warcraft.
