Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

This is good, the Krait Mk II looks like a very reasonable explorer - good fuel scoop, jump range a little improved on the Python (which itself is respectable), good view, plenty of internal slots and the opportunity to carry an SRV without it being the crippling burden that it is for the Keelback. Hopefully the supercruise manoeuvrability is decent, I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

@Jorki - the Python's manoeuvrability was significantly reduced from its original capability, but that was ages ago. Possibly the companion sheet hasn't been updated?

Also, it is said to run cool.

Doh! I made a ship comparison spreadsheet from the wiki data when I first started playing in 2015; have added new ships as they came along but forgot to go back & check them all for changes. Might do that while waiting for the server

edit: but crucially for an exploration ship, what’s the cockpit visibility like?
On the downside it has one less slot than the python, and since FD are bringing in exploration drones for 3.4 that might be useful.

Here's the actual jump range in-game, with this build:

I'm in love with this ship already. I would prefer to dim the cockpit illumination a little, but it's OK. It feels faster and more nimble on thrusters as compared to the Python, and about the same in supercruise. Visibility from the cockpit is very good, but several of the Lakon ships do better (it's more comparable to the T7 than the Asp or T9). You have those two forward prongs with the medium hardpoints in the way if you want to look up and to the sides, but arguably that's the best place to have visible structure forward of the cockpit. You can't see behind you very much, except in a few small spots (such as looking through one of the multicrew windows). But overall you get a nice view, particularly for flying over planetary surfaces.

In the outfitting screens, the camera positions for installing hardpoints and utilities are a little mixed up (looking at the wrong ones most of the time), at least in VR. The bobbleheads are also slightly out of order in the livery. Nitpicky things here.

Here is mine, with booster:

I'm in love too :D It is just AWESOME.

Okay, Frontier, no dedi exploration ship. But THIS. Is good enough for me.

Vulture, because it's my main exploration ship in general. My Cobra Mk III would be better suited in general for this sort of expedition, but I more often prefer using my Vulture for its other advantages, even though for this trek it isn't as ideal.

Some of the Vulture's advantages and capabilities for exploration overall...

Good fuel scooping efficiency

Good supercruise maneuverability

Good handling over world surfaces

Good shields for landing

Fairly good general survivability in combat

Good systems explored per time efficiency

Good cockpit view

Sufficient room for basic exploration loadout, such as it is currently in the game

Decent heat tolerance levels

Sufficient jump range with Engineering

The Cobra Mk III is good at these things as well with the extra room for more redundancy, the use of an SRV, and similar, and better jump range, but at the cost of having lower combat survivability and a bit less maneuverability.

I have a python that jumps 42.72 ly and now with guardian boost have 52.72 ly.

Now it has a better jump / consumption / equipment ratio and although I have removed an AFMU module (had 2), and it allows to use the repair limpets.

With dirty engines has a very good maneuverability.

Looks de total mass XD

Unfortunately, I hear that doesn't affect supercruise maneuverability. With the fuel scoop you can get for such a ship, it fortunately doesn't effect jump honking efficiency much at all, but then you're still left wanting for moon tagging and the like.

Overall, a decent ship with a lot of options, but still not quite to my liking in general. Don't get me wrong though; you know I have one in the hanger for when I call upon it for these sort of things. :)

Updating my Exploraconda with the Guardian FSD booster has given it a jumprange of 76.2 LY, still with shields, a mining lance, refuel + repair limpets, et cetera. While it's not nearly as nimble as the Asp Explorer I otherwise use, it should be a well kitted-out ship for the expedition.

Of course, it is not a top range ship, but the krait loses a type-6 module and that means that in the field of long time exploration, it is not much better than an ASPx, except for the jump range.

The dirty engine helps maneuverability in normal space, which is necessary for when accessing the planets.

Anyway, I'm not trying to get people to change their favorite ship. The python is the one that I liked the most. Although I like more the dome of the pilot of the ASPx and the Krait.

My ASPx no.
That's just you doing a heavier build then. Compared to the new Krait, the Asp (Explorer) has a lighter base hull (280T vs 320T) and slightly lighter mandatory modules (class 5 sensors vs class 6). Given the same build, an Asp would out-jump a Krait.

What's the maximun range of jump by the ASPx can do it with cargo for exploration? itself without guardian booster

No worries. I'm not judging so much as just giving my preference for things.

Cheers. :)
