All the more reason to visit the place where the stars at night are big and brightNothing new for Philadelphia as of the arid pack. However, we did have the very last mhorr gazelle (a subspecies of the dama gazelle) in the AZA; I saw her last year a couple months before her death at the age of 14. There are still plenty on private ranches, mostly in Texas. There were also dromedary rides which were phased out a while ago.
Haven't updated for Monarto Safari Park in a while, but it seems the latest DLC has ticked off the black rhinoceros, addax and the Cape porcupine (given the African crested porcupine is a fine substitute), with the red deer and emu also now being in the game. However, they've also opened a new section named Land of the Lemurs which adds the radiated tortoise to the list of missing species. Here's an updated list, including the animals we already have this time:Thought it would be fun to compare this to Monarto Safari Park, Adelaide's sister zoo and the one that takes on most of the megafauna (the Adelaide Zoo is a small city zoo while Monarto is one of, if not the largest zoo in the world in regards to area). The roster here is far more complete:
Habitat animals:
- Tasmanian Devil
- Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby
- Cape Porcupine
- Black Rhinoceros
- Addax
- Blackbuck
- Common Eland
- Aoudad
- Red Deer
- Emu (not deliberately displayed but wild emus are so damn common on the grounds they might as well be)
- Malleefowl
Animals with reasonable substitutes:
- African Lion (unspecified) -> West African Lion
- Rothschild's Giraffe (hybridised I think) -> Reticulated Giraffe
- Mesopotamian Fallow Deer -> European Fallow Deer
Monarto has a lot more species backstage in breeding programs but I'm only including species on display
My local zoo keeps them in an area with the tigers, lions and leopards, so when people see them they say: "oh, this is just a cat"Maybe a boring one for some folk but, I desperately want a European wildcat. They're a common feature of the parks in my area.
Haha, they are kinda like domestic cats, but that's also why I like them. I see them acting like my own cat at home and I'm like "oh so cute" but also know they'd take my hand off if I was silly enough to try to pet themMy local zoo keeps them in an area with the tigers, lions and leopards, so when people see them they say: "oh, this is just a cat"
I confess I thought the same in my first visit![]()
