What's next in Elite Dangerous?

Where have they said that Update 15 and 16 were going to be mostly non-Odyssey content.
They haven't directly, but as U13 and U14 have kept the "Odyssey Update" name without having much to do with anything Odyssey-specific, and the Thargoid War is almost entirely non-Odyssey content, I wouldn't expect very much in that direction this time either. There's not been any hinting I've seen that they would contain anything for Odyssey, bugfixes aside.

And where have they said they Update 15 and 16 were primarily going to be focused on the Thargoid war?
https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/elite-dangerous-update-14-and-beyond-live-and-legacy-modes has "Aftermath will see its next major release with galaxy-wide implications in Update 14, with more to come in Updates 15 and 16. What we can say for now about Updates 15 and 16 is that they will both contain new content and gameplay mechanics linked to the unfolding events in the galaxy. More on this will be revealed next year."

And then more recently https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/update-15-upcoming-feature-rework-and-more has "Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react."

I would be happy if FDev would revise the space (planets, lighting) again.
At least the most annoying bugs should also be fixed.
I keep hearing a lot about these annoying bugs, and yet in 1000+ hours of playing I didn't really notice anything of importance.
Sure, the client keeps crashing when minimized. What else?

What else?
Some players dislike that space is too dark since 4.0
Some players dislike that it is too bright since 4.0
Some players dislike the content introduced in the expansion and claim it is not an expansion, but a new game.
Some forumites just wish to criticise everything about the developer of a game they may or may not play.

Asking that question should get some jolly replies! ;)

Do you minimise from full screen or windowed? I've not seen this kind of crash regularly since playing windowed during the time the AMD drivers were giving some odd behaviour for me in full screen.

It very much depends on which bits of the game you play. I don't notice many bugs in general ... but then I avoid the bits of the game which are full of bugs for one reason or another.

CQC is almost entirely unplayable at the moment since Update 14 because of severe rendering and object positioning bugs on two of its four maps, plus frequent crashes
Thargoid tissue sampling - a key component of the war - was broken years ago and never fixed, so it just sometimes randomly fails.
Scenario progress is still flaky in multiplayer; with the Thargoid War, lots more people are participating together in multiplayer scenario instances so this has become much more noticeable
Some plot-related surface sites just crash the game if you try to approach them.
The Powerplay UI has never been entirely accurate on how much CC powers have available to them

You can easily avoid this stuff - I haven't played CQC for years, I don't Powerplay, and I'm a very long way from the Thargoid war: the most serious bugs I see are some irritating but low severity display and UI ones. People trying to do the activities which are marginally more niche than fly-trade-shoot-explore tend to have to put up with a lot more.

Also if frontier didnt strut around in public poignantly asserting their own highest perfection (yet delivering less), I promise you there would be nothing bad to say.
I thought they were notoriously tight lipped, maybe at most a CM or two being excited about the next release.

FWIW, I just tab out of it and it doesn't crash for me.

Though there are quite a few other bugs and issues, but nothing that affects me at the moment.

Sadly I agree. I think this game still has legs (harhar) but there's been soooo many bad and halfbaked gameplay systems put in and left in place and the economy thoroughly wrecked that to rectify it would pretty much p everyone off.

Whaaaa? Did you mix CIG and Frontier up then?
is cig still around?? last time i chcekd there latest update blew up the servers for weeks and the game dosent even function

claims cqc crashes ....
states hasent played cqc in years ......

what a weild ride im having with the forum posts here.

Are you either not playing all the content or have you already accepted the bugs as features? ;)
I'll let you judge that:
I do mining, missions from both NPC (including "tip-off") and station boards, various signal sources (combat, convoys, crash sites, etc..), exobiology, exploration (space & on-foot), trading, sometimes Power Play, I use every service (Engineers, Interstellar Factor, Shipyard, Frontier Solutions, etc...), in Open mode.
What I don't do at the moment: AX combat (I don't have the right load and can't be bothered to get one for now), fighting with squadron/team mates as I vary too much my activities to suit anyone. Do I miss something?

Hi Old Coder, it's been a minute, I can't say I'm surprised to see that my gleam of positivity has attracted your response.
Hello again Fizzatron. You can blame Rust. If it just compiled faster I wouldn't have the time to surf forums and dispense my brand of doom and gloom.

That's your view and you're entitled to it, but it's not to be confused with, or presented as fact, as it seems you are trying to convey.
Disappoint them enough times and people will stop caring and just tune you out. That's what happened with the large group I used to play with. Nothing FDEV says is going to make a difference with them. They're gone and not coming back. FDEV would have to actually perform to even have a chance of getting through to them and even that might not be enough.

For an example outside of gaming look at the Star Wars franchise. It was once one of the most valuable franchise brands in the world. But after years of screwing up by Disney it's now effectively dead. They're having a very hard time getting investors to fund new movies as it's assumed that anything they make will underperform at the box office while being wildly overbudget. The merchandise, once a license to print money, now goes straight to the bargain bin and licenses to make it go begging. The TV series, supposedly the flagships of the Disney+ channel, underperform badly and don't bring in or keep subscribers. Even when Disney produces something that's actually good, such as the Andor series, it doesn't attract viewers. Even the third season of The Mandalorian is doing badly. This is what happens when you screw up long enough. People stop caring and just go away.

Do you work for Frontier or are privy to internal strategy? Unless that is a definite yes and with evidence to back that up, then your assertion is meaningless.
I don't work for FDEV, but I do create and sell software for a profit. That gives me a certain insight into what another software company might do. But it should be obvious anyway. Odyssey sales drastically underperformed, to the point where it had to be written off. Their financial reports make it clear that cosmetic sales are the only real source of revenue. They're not putting anything into the game except a minimal effort Thargoid war that requires very little in the way of new assets or coding. Even the cinematic for it looked amateurish. It may be an assertion but it I think it strikes very close to the truth.

Dropped? Source for that please?
If I told my customers that a major rework of a feature was coming and when it was close to due, then told them that it wasn't going happen and I'd discuss my plans later, they would assume that it had been dropped and they would be justified in thinking that. If I offered the excuse that the minimal effort job I'd been putting in made it impossible to do the rework they would really be convinced that it had been dropped. I'm just applying to FDEV the same standard that would be applied to me.

You might also note that FDEV hasn't said the rework is going to happen later, only that they'd discuss it. Based on my years of software development experience I'd say it's been dropped. Every time I've seen something like this happen it's been due to the lack of financial justification for it or the key people needed to do it had left.

Honestly, it is my reckoning that the type of thinking and attitude that pervades your response is probably the greater problem in relation to Elite than what actually is a problem with Elite
You know what drowns out negativity? Lots of happy customers. You know, the kind FDEV had in the earlier days. There was negativity in those days as well, but most players were too busy enjoying the game and looking to a bright future for it. But that future has come and gone and will not be returning. Neither will the customers.

Is the Thargoids something people really want expanded on?
That's kind of a weird question, you know?

It's like asking if Halo players really want the Covenant expanded on. Whether they do or not, it's part of the property. The Thargoids are the classic Elite enemy. I genuinely don't understand how some people don't seem to get this. They've been the big bad aliens in this series since 1984. Of course they're going to be expanded on, and things will continue to happen involving them. It's not like they're just something random injected into this latest Elite game. They've always been here.
