First and (and fdefinitly not)last or "A rant of beginner"

Graphics are pretty awesome and physics as well. But the game mechanics are aweful. It is time waste. You have to grind for days and weeks so you can get a decent ship to go fly and explore the galaxy on your own. It is way too punishing on losing your ship. You need expansive equipment for long distance jumps and you need to grind for hours to get it. I bought it years ago and waited to buy H.O.T.A.S after I realized I can't play it on keyboard. Now I feel like a waste of money on game and H.O.T.A.S. I lost a ship few days ago. Got offered a loan but option is red. I cant use it. I didn't had enough money for insurance, because I bought some equipment. Got interdicted. Got a bug with H.O.T.A.S. where my throttle issued commands I didn't press. I lost shield and died. Now can't rebuy ship. 2 weeks of play gone. My point is I don't want to play hard games. I am a casual player. I played only solo not even planed to go public. Flying from station to station gets really boring especially if station is far from a star. I wanted to use a unique opportunity to explore the galaxy, see all that visual content they worked so hard to make. But I can't because I need a good ship, for good ship you have to grind and grind and be careful not to lose it. So I ended up flying just betweeen few systems. From recent news it looks like they are turning it to M.M.O. it will be a bad course. I think Solo and public should be split. Solo for casuals and public for tryhards who think game should give them challenge. I would recommend it only to those who do not have real life and like space truck simulations or like to play "fetch" mining. To others unfortunatly no one is making a good space sim anymore. It is my fault not informing myself better before buying I admit. There are so many more bugs that need fixing and things need polishing. Wish luck to all who stay and play.

All of this above is written in rushed hour of grief over loosing a brand new Python for not being careful. I won't change what I wrote as a reminder to all new players like myself to take caution. Game is a gem once you figure out that you can do it your own way. It has downs and ups but ups are bright like a stars and this game is all about stars. Like I said visual content is amazing and no one should miss a fullspectrum experience of a fully sized true scale of our own galaxy. Its one of a kind travel opportunity.
I stand corrected. It was the first but definitely not the last review. I hereby stand at service to future new members at disposal, as much as I can. Just give it a bit to sync in. I have and it turns its a lot of fun out there. All that space to have fun in

So your HOTAS glitched and you'd failed to follow the single most basic bit of advice which you'll see repeated on every single tips for new players thread ... "never fly without the rebuy" (i.e. make sure you have enough money to cover your insurance rebuy costs") and you lost everything. I fail to see how this is the game's fault. Also, you don't need to grind at all to explore the galaxy and see all the wonderful visual content ... people have crossed the galaxy in a sidewinder. It just sounds like Elite is not the game for you (which seems surprising given that it's easily the best space sim ever developed). Oh well. I actually really hope you manage to shrug off your ship loss and give it another go. If you do and you need any tips or advice then there's plenty over here ...

.............. game and H.O.T.A.S. I lost a ship few days ago. ...............

Sorry you feel disheartened. Many people found themselves at the frustrating bump where an oversight on their part left them bereft.

I would urge / encourage you to put the disappointment behind you and just start again, "clear save" and fresh start. You will find that things which seemed challenging wehen you first started are now a breeze and that you will progress past the previous disappointment "level" very quickly. You will at least have learned by hard experience not to "fly without rebuy".

Lots of us have done a "clear save" fresh start (in fact many times) - it can be fun to work your way through the ships again. (Although "engineers" is a nuisance - having to jump the hoops to unlock them again is a real deterrent to "clear save" nowadays.)

I hope you give the game another go but good luck even if you don't.

Thank you for the advice. I have been reconsidering the clean save start. I just don't like the fact that is so punishing. And it does offer a loan but just can't take it. The funniest part is that I had a cargo worth the insurance cost. It was another Python and I had his shields down almost won. Another thing. I am casual gamer. Do not really have much time to invest in game, mostly 3 to 4 hours. I never looked for tips or videos. I have joined forum yesterday. I do like the visual content. I was also unbeatable in my Vulture but it had short jump. That is why I wanted Python. Thank you for the encouragement. I might as well start again.

This is what I have been missing

Hello all This is Krogothic New player !

After I download the game I tried to fly with mouse and keyboard and it was a disaster (. So I ordered me the Thrustmaster T16 and off I went.

Id like to say that I really enjoy this game, I mostly been running non combat mission but just have started combat and been great.

Playing in solo mode does feel pretty lonely with no one real to talk to.

But overall very happy and look forward to 1,000's of hours of game play !

Still not sure if I should be solo or open sever game play, still somewhat lost on the factions and locations just hanging out in the starting systems but guess I should leave and see the game.

But thanks all just sorry I never seen this game before as I would been playing all along

...............

Open play is the exact same galaxy - just that you can be matched with other real players in your game "instance" (it isn't a separate "server" like some games). In the past there was a bit of a problem with seal-clubbers hanging about the starting-systems in open play just killing any new players for LULZ - I don't know if there is much of that any more. Away from the "hot spots" like starter systems, engineer systems, places that sell "rare goods" or stations that are part of a Community Goal you will actually rarely see another real player in Open Play. Of course there is also the option of joining a private group where you can come across others also from that group. The most popular (I believe) are the non-PvP groups Mobius and Mobius_PVE but there are other groups like Fleetcomm for explorers etc.

Main thing is just enjoy yourself.

Oh yes, one other thing - welcome. :)

If you think this game is hard, you should play the original where you didn't start with fuel scoops and you had to pay docking costs and and fuel costs every time you jumped, I went bankrupts so many time it was not funny.
Yes this game is sort of an MMO, but without the disadvanteges of other MMOs in my opinion as we are in such a huge sand box that I had played in the open for at least 3 months before I ever saw another player.
If Your HOTAS is a thrustmaster, I would be happy to either provide you with my script that has so far been glitch free or I can help you design a script that will work how you want it.
I do however agree with Alec Turner "it's easily the best space sim ever developed". I don't know if you know the history but this game was made by the person who pretty much invented the genre.
While if you choose to grind for better ships you can, but one of the great things about the game is the sidewinder is a totally playable ship, so no grinding is necessary I now have an Imperial Clipper, I have been playing for just over 12 months in between family work and my social life and I only did very minimal grinding toward the end because I was close. I would suggest that grinding in this game is actually a bad idea, there is too much to explore and do and who cares if you don't have the best ship in the galaxy. If you get in a fight you can't handle, running is always an option as long as you plan ahead and are careful.
I hope you give it another go, and if you want help or support you can find as much as you need here on the forum.

When I re-read my post before I hit the post button, I am always happy with it, but if I re-read after I hit the post button, I always feel I should re-post and say that english is not my first language. This is a total lie of course, english was unfortunately my first language, I just never mastered it. :D

Having played EVE Online for over 10 years I was hesitant to try a new space mmo. EVE gave me a lot of love and in the end disappointment.
Im two weeks in and other than the constant mission board crashing I'm impressed by the size and scope of the universe. Will be very interesting to see where this game goes and my thoughts on gameplay in another month once I have a deeper understanding of all its ins and outs

I just came back after a long hiatus from the game. Initially, when i first started playing ED late last year, i started off learning what i could. Played it for about 2 or 3 weeks. Then decided to go play other games i been wanting to play. About 2 months ago, i decided i was getting too much of withdrawals from this game, and decided, i would play 1 or 2 hrs of other games each time i play games, and then the rest of that day/night/arvo/evening would be spent in playing ED.
And when i started doing that, i logged into ED, finding myself i had to learn all over again lol.
Then 2 or 3 weeks later, i decided i wanted to immerse myself in ED a bit more by getting the Oculus Rift and the Thrustmaster Warthog stick, throttle and pedals. When i got rift, i had a go of it in other games and demos to get a feel for it.
Then started reading up about the warthog. I read for about 2 weeks, learning about how to set it up, learning what everything does, learning about the GUI, reading about what problems other people had to give me an idea of what to expect if i ran into trouble myself. Just heaps of reading and watching some YT videos.
I got it setup, and then found myself having to learn to fly and drive all over again lol.
I also went flying with a group of friends, i found this group through a FB page, and have made some more friends in ED and they have shown me a few tips and tricks ingame, as well as havin a blast goin bounty hunting and doin missions.
Anyone wanting to try this game, if something goes wrong, dont give up, preserve with it and you'll get it goin, no matter what the issue is.
For me, i had issues with keybinds resetting on me recently, and i felt gutted by it because it happened not once, but twice. And someone said the same thing to me, "to preserve, and you will be happy", and he was right!
I set it up the 3rd time, but not until after i deleted the BINDS file from the folder so it would force a refresh ingame, and it worked. Got past it, got flyin again and i was more than happy. I was stoked!
Its a great game, well to me, its not just a game, its what i wish life was. Being able to go explore the universe, meet other cultures, etc, go mining, go exploring, etc, etc.
Someone once said "its 2017, why havent we got a lunar base yet? What the hell is goin on? " I'll give you a good clue as to who said it, the CEO of X-Space ;)
But for now, i am happy playing ED, at least i can still explore our galaxy :)

Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. It sounds like the root of it though is that you've fallen into a trap of thinking you need an expensive ship & equipment. You don't.

Sure, if you want top of the range stuff and max performance, then you're going to have to work to get it, but that's down to you. You don't need that top of the range stuff.

There really aren't many things in game which you need top range stuff for. If you wanted to compete against the top PVPers then you'd need top end stuff, but again that's a choice and it doesn't sound like something you want to do anyway.

I'd suggest following the advice others have already given and wiping your save and starting again, but this time don't worry about having to get an expensive ship. Just play the game. And never fly a ship if you don't have enough credits to cover the rebuy cost.

Best of luck whatever you choose to do!

If you get yourself into a good group, which there are many in this game, you will find they will want to help you get the credits you want so you can get other gear and ships. Im with a group, and they are always willing to go out and bounty hunt with you or whatever it is you want to do.
And really, any game these days, will make you grind. Some are just worse than others. And i actually find ED is pretty good. It doesnt take forever to get a new ship. Sure it might take a while depending on what you do, but i think its no where near as bad as some of the other games out there :).....dont give up mate, give it time :)

I played EVE for about 2 or 3 weeks, i gave up on it, because it takes over a month just to get max out 1 skill. And if you are someone like me that has to have all skills, then you are looking at a long long time. I think that is wrong. i once read somewhere, it was about 20 yrs or something to max out every skill. So if someone that start playing the game and they are 60 yrs old, chances are they will not get anywhere near to what they want.
The other thing that turned me off with Eve, was everywhere i tried to go, someone would blow me up and i would have to start over again because i didnt have enough credits. Eve is just too brutal, specially on new players.

lol, my english is bad at times. Write something out then have to edit posts because ive mispelt or left key words out,etc

Kudos for that - I hope you will find it a lot less punishing than you fear, things are much more simple the second time as you now know what you are doing.

Enjoy yourself. :)

Thank you. I have started a new. Got my self into a Viper after 6 hours. It is easier. Yet I miss that python. I am currently plotting a course in a sidewinder of a distance of around 20000Ly. Will see how that goes.

Of course it's easier. People who clear their save usually ask, "Was I really that bad when I first started?" Yes, you were. You had absolutely no experience. You didn't know how to dock, trade, fight, smuggle etc, etc. Starting a new save takes away your material resources. But nothing (except a head injury maybe) can take away all the experience you've gained. It took me almost 2 weeks when I started to upgrade to a hauler. And another 2 and a half to upgrade to a Cobra. Now I can go from sidewinder to cobra in a few hours. That's how much difference experience makes. Don't worry, you'll be back in your Python in a month or two. Took me a year and a half to get my first Python, but now I could do it in less than 3 months. And that 20,000 ly jaunt you are programming will net you quite a bit (so long as you have an ADS and a detailed surface scanner would get you even more).

I guess I overreacted. Other bad stuff added up to it with some bugs that are still present. I reported those but doesn't hurt to mention them here as well. Bugs are new email stacking in email box, missions to Colonia and few other systems 20000Ly away, not retrieving mission board message , autopilot gets stuck occasionally on landing pad not being able to land while you are doing something else for example look through emails or transactions overview. I solved the problem with H.O.T.A.S. it was due to a lack of power that USB port outputs. I started a new. Pirate hunting missions are pretty rewarding now or just my impression. Got my self into a fully equipped Viper MkIII. Thank you for the info about groups. I have 12 working hours a day so not much free time remains. I will see about groups. I was picometer close to uninstall the game yet I started a new, maybe Ill join some group. I just needed a view from a different angle and you guys provided one. Thank you for that. Game is hard and ask for paying attention. I never disputed visual content. It is what I still like about it. And I am back in it for an adventure out there into the unknown far and beyond.

The best ADS and best scanner got me to grind. I was dragged in, I wanted post durable ship to start exploration with. I got my self 50 millions in just a week of play. And I discovered more and more cool stuff I wanted to bring with my self. So you guess an you aright, I started to grind. Than I saw this tea on a discount for just 500 credits and I started loading my Python full capacity transporting it to sell it for 2000. I spent all the insurance money on cargo. And than KABOOM I lost all. I had enough rank to get a loan but it wouldn't let me. That's the moment I lost my temper. I started throwing bricks at game 3 days after, because of no response from devs. Than I discovered forums and joined in. Got a help with H.OT.A.S. and solved it by buying USB hub with its own power supply. Now I am a bit sorry for making that harsh a review. But game is pretty unforgiving if you do not pay attention. Yet I admit it is the best among other space simulations. I sold all I had for python. It was so funny when I look back now. I had Viper mk4 and Vulture on steroids I had on equal in combat with it. I was taking full pirate killing missions with it taking even on on 4 or 5 pirates at the same time in it. Felt invincible. Than got smashed do to a glitch. Ill change the name of my post to a "rant of a beginner". Thank you fo the support KellyR and to all others convinced me to give it another chance.
