Why do some players decline wing invite in res sites?

I hate winging up with anyone for many reasons.

1, I use VR which makes chatting in comms nearly impossible

2, I take random frequent brakes to go get a coffee or whatever which means leaving people waiting around for me.

3, whatever I'm doing is not usually "easier" with 2 people, often more difficult

4, instancing can be a pain.

5, the few times I did try and wing up, I was often stuck waiting around while they go get their other ship, or outfit it differently or something

6, I don't usually like the people I meet online. they'll often start talking about stuff I care nothing about.

Sounds like most of my crew... we're prone to stepping away for coffee, cigarettes, pet distractions, food - we're all to glad to sit on all the large landing pads while we do it too. We'll talk about things even we don't care about, or we might not say anything for hours. We may or may not comm-chat, but we've all outfitted our ships, shipped them where we need them and the only thing anyone ever waits for is Commander Angel Food Cake to finish baking something, Commander Micro-bladder to get back from the head, or Commander Five Kids to put everyone to bed. It's a good thing we're never in a hurry, except when we are.

In general terms, it's always true to say you "shouldn't fly what you aren't prepared to lose" but that goes double, triple and quadruple, for any interaction involving another player.

A while back, somebody asked me about unlocking whichever engineer wants stuff mining.
I was mining Painite at the time and I said I'd be quite happy to hand some over.
So, we agreed to meet.
I showed up in my Corvette and they showed up in a Cutter.
To swap 10 units of Painite.

Anybody who's played this game for long enough will realise that you can't trust anybody and there's always a risk you'll be stabbed in the back.

In summary, I'd rather earn half the credits in a CZ/RES/CNB by myself than earn a re-buy and become somebody else's "emergent content".

LoL - Stealthie,

You have a very healthy cynical view of the world and especially ED!

To counter this cynicism, I usually (try) to look for and expect the good side from people. For example, I helped a fellow cmdr out last week after they posted on the forums asking for help by handing over several 100mil via MA transfer down in Maia. I wasn't out to lure them so that I could lynch them in a moment of weakness. I just like to help out where I can. I'm sure many other cmdrs are the same, offering help where they can (like you with your Painite).

Going by the ethos that you are expecting to get attacked by everybody (all of the time, even when offering help) is just sad... Best to avoid that kind of thinking I feel.

That said, several Fuel Rats have been lynched before now ... That really is sad!

I'm an excellent combat pilot

You only can say that when you've given the best players a run for their money! The AI is a joke...just because you can exterminate NPCs easily means slightly less than sweet FA! I have done the Elite assassination missions you always talk about 'as a challenge' in my full explorer fit DBX with c3 shileld, 3 x lightweight C2 pulses & no chaff. I've only failed one; when a bounty hunter in a FDL turned up at the same time - & I'm a casual player using fixed weps with a Hotas X, hence nowhere near as good as some of the best PvPers in the game...& I know this because I've fought a lot of them 1v1 at the CGs (when they are not ganking, that is - oh yeah, contrary to popular belief, winged-up gankers are often some of the apex PvPers.)

...I think I remember a thread you started (a yr ago?) with a view to participating in PvP? Err have you actually done any yet? If not, why not?

You know most players are rubbish at it, right? I jumped in at the deep end because I don't have the time to ease myself in...'headed straight to the CGs with a partially upgraded G3 Vulture & my first 'proper' PvP opponent was some chap named 'Monstro99' in a FAS - D'OH! I've fought him 6 times now & never won...although, once I did drop into his instance when he interdicted another Vulture to find it with no shields & we both managed to drive him off - luckily, he was only in a Python & he didn't know I'd run out of ammo just when he began charging his FSD.

Ergo, what exactly are you waiting for? It's the most fun in the game, imo & a very real challenge - there are some seriously devoted (obsessed?) PvPers out there!

I actually already think it's pretty nuts how many pirates come to the slaughter to be farmed (they don't learn that efficient pf bounty hunters are more common than miners in a RES?), so I'm glad that doesn't quadruple when you're in a wing!

I think HAZRES ships need an equipment buff, they are not as strong as CZ enemies.

At busy RESs at the CGs, it is a regular occurrence to sit around waiting for one wanted ship to appear as the random spawns are annihilated so quickly - 5 to 10 minutes is not uncommon - the problem is so prevalent that leaving the instance & returning, en masse, to reset the spawn has become second nature to CG regulars...& even this 'solution' is subject to the gods.

& yes, all AI need the same equipment - inc full engineering for the top combat ranks - that we have because their piloting skills are okay, if a little formulaic (literally[big grin])..but they are at such a massive offence/defence disadvantage that combat is simply a mismatch, as it stands.

Man, there are some nice people play this game. But there are some real horrors. I suppose that's to be expected on an anonymous forum. Let's try to be a bit better than that though yeah?

I dunno man, if someone came up to me in the street and asked to go for a ride in their car I'd probably say no. If I met someone in a pub and got to know them over a number of weeks and then they asked if I wanted a ride, I'd be more likely to go with them. It's the same in games.

The long-running joke among my crew is: "This Haz RES is just like Jared Fogle's love life: too many miners."

But it doesn't have to be a busy CG location - in fact I tend to do most of my CG Bounty Hunting in neighboring systems, as the likelihood of finding other Commanders there to be minimized. Of course, there is a certain logic too - if pirates go in and never come out, it makes sense that fewer might come in - though I might suspect more larger ships than smaller if the smaller ones keep disappearing.

That's the most natural way to go about it really.
You meet people in-game in various ways (just as in real life), some of them you get to know better over time and befriend them.
Auto-declining party invites, guild invites and dueling invites in the social options is one of the first things i do when starting out in a new MMO.
And i'm not anti social, but i'm selective about who i want to share my spare time with, in game and outside.

Play mostly in Mobius when CG bounty hunting, drop into whatever Res Site happens to be the best. If theres any other players there ill ask does anyone want to wing up. If not no worries, ill just head to the other side of the Rez site and hunt on my own. May even jump in and out again depending on spawns or check another res, loads of options usually.

Each to there own, dont wanna wing up? Dont wing up.

Current CG met 3 other players in a high res, after a bit we decided to check surrounding systems for a haz res with the appropriate faction. Found one so we all jumped over.

Ended up handing in around 4.5milliin in bounties a little while later. No issues

Never met any of the players in the wing before then. This is how it usually goes for me,pretty hassle free and enjoyable. Nobody getting there knickers in a twist.

All this is in Mobius though so its most likely so hassle free becuase the type of player mobius attracts and its a PvE group. Open is another kettle of fish, winging up in open there is always that tension that the others can turn on ye in a instant. Id still accept the wing invite though!! More good experiences by far than bad.

Just my 2 cents

Not a complaint, just genuinely curious. It makes sense, to me at least, to wing up and both get a bounty as opposed to fighting over getting the last hit. I'm just wondering if some players actually prefer to compete over bounties instead of being in a wing....

When I played in Open I never accepted invites of any kind.
Not because I like to compete, but because I don't care about multiplayer gaming.
Most of the time I just left and jumped to another area.

I've followed the same general rule since internet gaming became a thing. Send me an unsolicited invite without saying anything to me, and I'll automatically decline it.

If you're polite and say something, that's a different story.

I winged up for the first time this weekend and quite enjoyed it. As a Viper 4 pilot it was cool to act as a scout for a sweet Cutter. Being able to employ team tactics on the AI got some amazing results. Vipers are cheap though. I can see how someone wouldn't want to risk it.

Yes, in another game I play that's known as the "Ninja Invite". It's always declined.

Strange so many people base their time in Elite on one bad experience.

Not one, several actually. First time I got ganked in this game was on day 2 and a wing invite...they claimed to be mobius...they were SDC but I was a noob and didnt know any better.

Ye know what they say about first impressions? They tend to leave a lasting impression.

As others have said, never ever accept random invites from anyone ye dont know...its a bit like sleeping around...sooner or later yer gonna get an itch and a rash which is why smart people dont sleep around ^

This, exactly.

At least say "hi" and state your intentions before hitting invite button, or it will be declined and in some cases (depending on mood, how disruptive invite pop-up is, etc) will cause immediate addition to blacklist too.
