I didn't know there was a snake called Asp until recently, and thought it referred to the biting bug common in my region, especially considering the ship's shape and Lakon rather than Faulcon origin. Definitely not an acronym, though.

I've always called in Asp as in the snake. Probably because I like snakes.

I can't resist the urge to be pedantic...

There were a few that weren't - Worm, Moray and Gecko for other creatures, and the Orbit Shuttle and Transporter. The Transporter in the original game was a Lakon ship according to the manual, so the ones in E are clearly its successors. The Thargoids were another obvious exception.

I think part of this is that while Viper, Cobra and Anaconda are known snake names also in other languages, Asp is not. Hence many people didn't even know that this was a word.
Secondly, maybe more importantly, did Frontier themselves spell Asp 'ASP' on their website. In an old version of the Shipyard subpage, there was the sentence that the 'ASP Explorer is the civilian version of the military model Asp Mk II' . I could imagine that it was spelt ASP also in other, 'official' places. So if even FD were not consistent in this, no wonder players are not... and, honestly, why wouldt it matter?

Ahhh, yes you're right - I remember the Gecko and the Moray, however I'm pretty sure the Orbit Shuttle and Transporter were not in the Speccy version (my own "first encounter" with Elite)
