Why does the odyssey look worse than horizons?

When I bought the Odyssey, I thought that the graphics would be better, or at least at the same level as the horizons, but when I started the game I was very disappointed. Why such a downgrade in the graphics? Reflections, lighting, space, ship materials, everything is much worse. But the main reason for my indignation is that in the changelog it was written "improved graphics" and not "downgraded graphics"
I want to clarify, in both versions of the game, the graphics are on the "high" preset, fsr is off

Sorry but that brought a wee snigger from myself , the" it has more potential bit" . Always sounds like it can be better but not quite yet . But maybe possibly in the future . No disrespect to yourself commander .

Too bad you didn't check the forum and reviews before spending that money, because the warnings you seek are there, including a pretty glaring "Mostly Negative" review score.
I would have bought EDO( for console I even upgraded my Xbox one to series X for that sole purpose) just to support Elite and I think many folk have had a long and enjoyable history with Elite . I mean how bad would it have been???

Odyssey release was premature. Perhaps unfinished. Covid being a factor no doubt.
But what we have today is the bare bones.
Given time it'll be fleshed out. I too do not think Odyssey is a huge step up looks wise..better yes by a small margin. Planets look better.
Lighting is better although borked atm.
AA is non existent

Read/heard most of this about Horizons. Must be an echo chamber in here...

I wonder why. Do some people really prefer 3.8 lighting? I thought that was just review bombing.
I really do prefer the EDH 3.8 lighting in the game compared to EDH 4.0. The Skybox is better, ship cockpits are better, etc. I do like the EDH 4.0 Outfitting, so much easier due to the organization of the stored modules, at the cost of more mouse clicks to get things done.

OP I agree EDH 3.8 to me looks better overall. However EDH 3.8 is what 4, 5 years old now. It has been spruced up if not perfected over the last few years (who am I kidding, lots of bugs still in 3.8) , Ody (4.0) was rushed to market, imho. However I am hoping it will age like fine wine, and therefore can only get better. I mainly play via Steam in 3.8. My Epic freebie alt, plays EDH 4.0 exclusively now, just so I can see how it progresses, but that is only a hour or two so far.

I am firmly in the Odyssey looks jobbie camp. Lighting is yukk generally, supercruise body display is infuriating, ship's lights are feeble, planets are often chequerboard - the list goes on.

OK atmospheric lighting can look great sometimes but that doesn't make up for the rest of the issues.

realistic seems to be a perspective.
I was not aware that fog was so obvious in space and in any area that has lighting.
or that mc's had such bright impact zones...
and sadly to make it go away makes things chunky.

then there is the killer systems, the ones that force your video card down to 20fps and makes it like slo mo to do anything.
having to adjust my video card several times a day is ridiculous. and no setting brings back the beautiful galaxy that was pre-Odyssey.
no setting makes the poor fps even with other times and places.
some systems, some bodies(settlements) have too much going on and just ruins the game. like playing a 48k game on an 8k Atari 400, slow and jerky and where tf is the OFF switch.

It will get fixed, I am sure. but when???
and now with at least 2 game versions, with 1 falling apart more every time something gets changed in the other...

I have 1 system I can't even fly into, it melted my previous card and this card drops to 5fps when I enter the system.
only fdev knows why any system is different than another, it should not matter to us or to our computers.

the best settings I get is using vr low or vr mid, everything else is awful.
my card does ultra, and I can run all 3 accounts at the same time on the same pc.
the pc and the card can handle it, the game just has too many issues related to graphics AND they are not the same in each version.
When in Odyssey, it just feels like my computer is broken.

Sorry, but in VR Odyssey is most definitely worse looking. I'm sorry, but "pretty sunsets" do NOT make up for absolutely boring surfaces, with rocks and details magically materializing as you come up on them. I migrated my Xbox account over and left it on Horizons 3.8. Much more enjoyable in VR.
