Nothing wrong with that OP, but nothing wrong with playing in Solo or quitting the game either.

I've never said there's anything wrong with being in Solo. I respect that choice. However I don't ever deal with CMDRs in Solo, because well they're in their own instance. This thread is about those trader players in Open.

I have zilch against Solo. :)

can i hire you? i would even get a t6 and go back to rares trading just to be pirated that way. of course i would want you to shoot out my drives.

@Unikorn- I was thinking the same. When I could play in Open (now I have really crappy phone-driven Internet) it was fun to interact with "Alternatively Friendly" Human Players. :) Being in smaller ships than FdL or Python I HAD to flee, but some serious rep was virtually given to a lot of players.

I do must sadly concede that a lot of 'wannabe pirate' act waaaaaaaaaaay too salty in game to be taken seriously.

That said I've never been killed. Never. And I plan it to keep it like that.

Yes it is!

From the front page of the Frontier website.

Fly alone, or with friends
Experience unpredictable encounters with players from around the world in Elite Dangerous' vast massively multiplayer space. Fly alone or with friends in a connected galaxy where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy.

Actually, no it's not. Even your quote only states multiplayer, with implied potential for PvP.....potential only. Remember that for PvP to work, it must include multiplayer, but it does not automatically follow that multiplayer must equal PvP. In fact, the content, by a large margin (Powerplay aside that is), is PvE-centric regardless of the mode played in. And Braben himself hoped for cooperative PvE to be a major ingredient in how people play. What they developed in open is a PvE mode that allows PvP to occur, but that mode could survive quite happily without any PvP at all - none of the content actually requires PvP at all (well, not the direct combat style of PvP most people associate with PvP.....there is the indirect PvP offered by Powerplay of course). Not even CGs actually require combat-based PvP. It's a PvE game first, PvP second.....and the content is evidence enough of that. But I don't expect you to agree with that - after all, we're all entitled to our opinion and to play the game the way we want.

Looks like genuine piracy to me. Whats wrong with that? This from a PvE Private Group player. The scurvy dog. :) This OP action isnt griefing.

Because I'm a filthy pirate. Incredibly, this means I want cargo, not blood, especially not my own blood.

So I use logic to choose my targets. I simply go for those that are obviously a cargo hauler.

Upon sight, I drop my "submit now" macro & begin the interdiction tether. Sometimes the target fights back, sometimes they follow my request.

We drop into normal space. I send my "stop for scan" macro. If the target runs or shoots, I drop a "last warning" macro. If grey stop, I continue the cargo scan. If they have cargo, I request at most six tonnes, as I only have a sixteen ton hold. Often I request less. If the target begins negotiations, I discuss terms. After the transaction, I offer protection for an extra ton of cargo, his choice of commodity. This protection means I won't attack him for a week. I have a notebook at hand.

If he does not comply, I open fire. First, I target a drive. Then, I target the hatch. If he tries to shoot, or calls in friends, I kill him. I have to get build a reputation.

Now I don't see the above as unreasonable. I make every effort to open diplomatic talks. What happens to the hauler is ultimately his choice.

Also, I welcome bounty hunters. I have a macro taunting them to chase me, and another saying "Well played" if they best me.

But, despite all the efforts to be an efficient pirate who just is after cargo, only killing as a last resort, I'm near always called a griefer. Oh well, if that's a term for a true pirate now, I'll wear it with pride. Watch out cargo movers... I'm on the hunt. :]

I for one like your style. And I'm very much anti pirate in my play style.

But you did say people are calling you a griefer. I think that's the same like calling Solo players cowards and carebears. So I think both playstyles share the same problems, some idiots who can't accept that others are playing the game the way they like, which is why I mentioned it.

To me this is exactly how piracy should be done - it was part of the original game and definitely intended to be part of this game. For those who disagree, this is what Mobius and Solo mode are for. Open is intended to be 'Dangerous' - which is why if I'm mining, exploring or trading I don't go near it.

Op, you're playing the game the way you want, nothing wrong with that....your targets are playing the game the way they want, nothing wrong with that.....the two methods however are not compatible. I'd go so far as to say if every "pirate" acted as you do then I'd be tempted to dabble a foot in Open. Sadly that's not the case.

FD NEED to flesh out Piracy with FAR more content and with a suitably hard and harsh police response (depending on security level). Traders should be able to buy emergency beacons that when activated bring in a smeg load of coppers in areas of lower security, of course these beacons would cost a fair amount of cash.

Piracy should be viable but basically should be the hardest difficulty.

also PVP "psychopaths" should be actively hunted by spawning uber Ai (authority and bounty hunters) WHEREVER they go in the galaxy and the only way to pay it off is basically a "fine" of Billions (i.e. everything they own). Being a psychopath should be literally impossible. But have a leaderboard of some kind for those who survive the longest (so they can have some sort of kudos and badge of honour when they start off with a sidey and a 1000 credits again.)

I think most open players including scumy pirates crave more multi-player content., whether co-op or ompetitve. Co-op is good for the pirate you see, as it brings clients into an area. This is why CGs are so attractive. Although, for the same reason some of the more murderous players also go there.

In addition to PP, there are some edge cases in BGS also where PvP give the best return for time and resource, there are often just not enough players to make it viable as the only method.

PvP is there, but a 2nd class citizen as you point out. I personally want mire mechanics for it, but we are still building the multi-player framework as 2.3 demonstrates, so content will come later.

In the meantime - like the OPs apprach.

Really guys!
We have 3 modes and people still aren't happy.
Pick your damn mode and enjoy the game.
But I can understand why people who want to avoid pvp don't think PG (even mobius) is sufficient and want a 4th option. Mobius can seem just as empty as solo at times to someone who wants the company and player interaction without PVP.

As generally a solitary player even in a system with other players I don't care myself and accept open must involve PVP risks. It's the only thing that really gives a bit of fear to flying the big bad universe and if I'm not in the mood for it or have distractions happening in real life I'm fine to switch to mobius or solo. Apart from obvious griefers I'm fine with open as it is and want the risk as part of the fun.

But I can see why they would want a social mode without PVP. I just happen to disagree with them that it should be a default option, but if there I would use it rather than mobius when not in the mood.

The problem with a PVE mode is that PVP might as well die a death then as other than a few nutters like me who would end up getting bored of playing the only targets in the universe, it would empty while PVE only ED loses the danger thrill.

So we are left with people wanting to be in open but under rules they want to restrict others and risk to themselves (which just doesn't work) and feel annoyed that they feel forced out of the main game by a minority of players into smaller ghettos where they don't get wider interaction with others.

It will always cause arguments and there are rights and wrongs on both sides. Adding proper C&P in game, bounty hunting tools and some love for piracy/faction wars would help, but there will always be somebody unhappy on both sides of the fence no matter what is done.

FD will have to go with the majority of players though eventually as they need them paying, I just hope they get some balance rather than going too far either way. Currently with no real in game risk for crime it is unbalanced though and relies on people like the OP setting their own rules of engagement for themselves to provide a more reasonable position. That shouldn't be needed, but I've already repped him for it.

You gonna act like a , you gonna die like a , if you want to go full neckbeard "it's game design" on me stop right there, can't stand that bull. Do the math, piracy doesn't pay nearly enough to make any sense. You can't steal exploration data. Because its a demo with demo dlc. Wake me up when this game has content, maybe in 9 years when my time in the navy is over this could actually have some basic gameplay to it

Let me guess, for no reason ever should another player in open interrupt your game play, it should be filled with unicorns and carebears right?

What? But I thought open was an empty wasteland with only lost souls and gankers left while Mobius is filled to the brim with angels.

The game is "do what you want". End of. Simple as. If that doesn't suit you, then get stuck into Mobius and stop complaining further :)

The game COULD survive without mining. It COULD survive without exploring. So what? Way to prove nothing. Fact of the matter is that even FD recognises Open play has to remain Open, with no encouragement of any playstyle. If FD supported ED being PvE only any more than some offhand musing from Braben, it would be...well, PvE only, and there would be minimal craps given about CLing or shaping a karma system to facilitate player interactions.

Categorising content into "PvP" and "PvE" and then being disdainful of one category is your own choice...the more you sit and complain that ED is not a PvP game the more you look the fool. There's a vast PvP community and it isn't going away (y)

...OP, I'm glad you tried this and let us know your experience. It just goes to show that the CMDRs most eager to "stop others playing how they want" are the ones that will complain about others doing it most. How dare you introduce risk to a trader's life in deep space! How dare you do it in the most convenient and accommodating manner possible! How dare you play a pirate!

Thats the way to play, don't let the buggers get you down.
What you are doing sounds interesting and you give your victims every opportunity to cooperate.
Keep up the RP game play.

If you make the effort of stopping me and not just shooting me I most likely will abandon the cargo instead of jettisoning it to encourage good behavior. And not the biowaste when heading to an agri station, either.
If you just shoot me, well, then you are a griefer in my book. Roleplaying/behaving like a pirate I can actually respect. Copypasting a simple line into the chat isn't a crime.

What? But I thought open was an empty wasteland with only lost souls and gankers left while Mobius is filled to the brim with angels.

Not quite yet. Noobs and nutters like me still there, plus some stubborn people who refuse to leave, ignorant people who don't understand the risk, competent people who can handle the risk and of course thousands of explorers who might as well be in solo anyway as out in the Black along with the gankers.

Oh, and people who aren't angels in mobius in large numbers including kill stealers and gankers invading for a while. And that's with a limited player pool. So not perfect by any means, but the best players can arrange for themselves to avoid what I think is a minority of PVP players.

That minority not including a few on here who just enjoy playing the big bad wolf or overreact when justifiably angry at being rounded up in the same group as gankers and griefers or people cheating to ruin their legitimate gameplay.

Well, firstly I wasn't being disdainful of either mode over the other. Just stating a fact - the content is predominantly PvE-centric. End of. Simple as. As you put it. And I wasn't complaining the game was not a PvP game. But whatever....

And that 'vast' PvP community you speak of may not be as 'vast' as you think where Elite: Dangerous is concerned - even Frontier have acknowledged that the majority of players don't participate in PvP. Not that I want that PvP community to go away and never suggested that should happen but go on misinterpreting posts.....
