Why ive given up on ED.

12 seconds into your vid, a ship changes direction. Would you say that's a good example of FA-off flight mechanics?

Don't try arguing flight model with an FE2 guy, it's futile. That particular flight model was junk and is generally considered junk. Just check the Oolite forums. But it has a few devotees who will wax lyrical about it, as though constantly circling your opponent was in any way fun. Also David Braben admitted it was only put in because the publishers wanted to rush the game out.

But like I say, don't waste your breath.

Firstly, the worst in game storyline I've ever come across. Its totally dead.

There is as much personal engagement as a rock. It doesn't work for me.

And then, I found a game that does. Have a think about this. I like my ship a LOT. Whichever one I am piloting. Here's where FD screwed up. In assassins creed Black Flag, The ship works as it should in the water. As I am familiar with the sea, I let it do my work for me. Its not just a rubbish simulation of how water works, it actually does it extremely well.

I am way, way ahead of where I should be, because I understand this tactic, and the underlying physics of the game enable me to do so. Solid physics, solid gameplay. Surprise, surprise, you are ON a ship, travelling through a medium.

Which ED pathetically fails at.

1: There are no mediums in game.
2: Black hole my butt.
3: None at all. Its pathetic.

And I've just given up on all the bull.

The trick is suspension of disbelief...

Yes, it does long term psychological damage and shreds your psyche to pieces. Think of it as the worse of possible addictions. If you have managed to escape this particular black hole, I wish you well in the real world!

Send me a bowl of petunias so that I know it still exists out there somewhere! :p

"Oh No, not again"...

Uhh.. I've been playing Black Flag too.

Last time I sailed a sailing boat, it didn't have a speed up button. It didn't have cannons either to be honest. Lol
(I wish it did)
Bracing also doesn't magically prevent damage, that'd be like squeezing your butt cheeks in order to not damage your car in a collision. Lol
But anyway...

I'll agree on you with the story. I have no clue what's going on, without visiting the forums, or trying to find a useful entry in galnet.

Black holes have been harmless for a long time. But then so we're neutron stars. Now they're quite deadly.
I imagine black holes will be given some kind of death makeover soon™. With any luck, much salt will be generated by first time Sag A visitors. Lol

As for mediums. There are mediums. Medium security. Medium pads. Lol
Unless you're on about psychics? Then no, we don't have those .. probably.

I'll agree, I do miss more realistic Newtonian physics. I-War managed to nail it between realism and fun. But I-War was single player.
Multiplayer is a different kettle of fish.

All in all, I give your post a 3/10.

ED is not a simulator
ED is not a Game
ED is not a MMO
ED is not a SandBox

ED is an... Experience. Graphically astounding, but that's where it ends. The story is nonsense, driven by manual server changes, and hidden in a USS.

If you accept that ED is graphically amazing experience, bugged, ill contrived with a narrative of a kids story book, it's great :)

Expecting anything more, is doomed to failure.

Ouy! That's mine! Give it back!

Well Said! Reped! :p

There's a name coming through ... it starts with an N ... or an M .... Mary? .... Maria? I think it's Maria, she asks me to tell you not to worry about the money.

How did you figure out the title to my memoirs!? [mad]

It's funny how quiet Doris Stokes became after she died.

I think it's a great idea to go to the forum of a game you hate so that you can profess your hatred of it. I hate raisins in cookies. Does anybody know where there's a forum for people who love raisins in cookies so I can go there and shout at them about how they are wrong?

Bon Voyage OP!

ED isn't for everyone. Some people want a personal narrative, others want other things. Its always better to recognize whether something is for you or not and move on if not.

I reserve final judgement on whether Elite: Dangerous fulfilled its potential, until after Frontier finally declare they are no longer developing it.

I don't know if that's going to be in 1 year or in 6 years time, but eventually there will come a point at which Frontier says 'enough - we're done'. At that point, I'll form my personal and final opinion.

Actually the OP had some pretty good points. Except for the bit about the storyline being dead. He was wrong. It's not dead. It's fossilised. It's like one of those funny little squiggles in an ancient rock where geologists can't decide if it was ever truly alive.

Best. Analogy. Ever.

Repped.

I don't mind the current flight mechanics in Elite Dangerous, but I do prefer FFE's Newtonian flight mechanics. I think FDev wanted dogfighting combat instead of jousting. To stop jousting in Elite Dangerous, we have speed restrictions.

I still personally think they should have gone with the maximum relative speed mode.... Ships flying solo and in open space can continue to accelerate indefinitely. However, when within mass lock range of each other, they have maximum relative speeds.

If a ship flies out of mass lock range of all other ships, it can once again accelerate freely.

Once the ships come into contact with other ships or the bubble surrounding a planet/space-station, the ships' frameshift drive glide mode activates until they are within mass lock distance.

That would have given the illusion of Newtonian flight but with short range WW2 combat as intended by DBOBE.

I'll tell you why I stopped playing ED, it's because I spent hundreds of hours in the game, did a bit of everything, owned most ships, made elite in exploration, and at he end of it I burned out and started to feel bored. But I loved it, and plan on coming back for the Q4 update at the end of this year, where I hope the big break and a years worth of new content will reignite my passion for the game.
