3rd person in arma is completely different than elite - if you can't shoot or anything while in external view. People just want a FAST camera you can instantly look around with. Like it has been done in every other game STAR CITIZEN included. Did it break SC??? NO it didn't.
Come on, your radar can do it already - 3d 360 degree one in the pit? We can pick the walls already come on! The advantage is clear when you dont have tech like our ships have.
3rd person is fine for a single player game, not for an MMO.

Though give me one reason, a melinnia into the future, I couldn't see a VR representation of the ship I was piloting in 3rd person complete with whatever information could be gathered about the surroundings.I can accept the immersion argument, along with the idea that giving a visibility bonus to people in 3rd person would automatically result in people always being in 3rd person mode for fights, but I still think it's unfortunate that the biggest cosmetic aspect of changing your ship's appearance ends up being invisible to you in 99% of situations. Even something as simple as "full color hologram of your ship with the current ship skin and modifications on the console" would be better than nothing, imo.

Third person view would not be possible when hard points are deployed would fix the combat advantage. Also nothing of the ship's functions would be possible to use in third person. Just steering.
And CQC would not have this function at all so that is not a problem.
A RADAR blip is not the same as seeing, so nope sorry, ED is a 1st person game, always was from day one.

3RD person view is unrealistic, anti-simulation. You don't control yourself from the third person either.
Just Saying Lockheed Martin Prepar3D and Flight Simulator Series always had external third person view...... so its not about unrealistic or whatever.
A proper third person camera with no ability to open fire would be viable or some combat limitations would be nice.

I understand the whole immersion factor playing from the cockpit, but why is there no 3rd person view option?
I doubt it's because of a design flaw, or the inability to provide a playable 3rd person perspective(seeing as there is an option to view your ship from that angle while in flight). I just don't understand why I can't play in 3rd person. Other than it would make fighting and landing a lot easier. We wouldn't want that, now would we...![]()

That's already a problem.That said, I don't think it's "just" PVP players that would be affected-- the additional situational awareness that would be provided by 3rd person vs 1st person would essentially drastically change the difficulty scope of the game, which would result in either a game that's "tuned" for being in first person and trivially easy for people in third, or tuning it for people in third person and impossible for anyone in first. The only way to really balance it between the two would be making the radar basically a in-cockpit-but-fully-VR'd third person view anyways...which isn't outside the realm of feasibility, but Fdev seems to want "reading the radar" to be both a learned skill and comparatively ambiguous, so this discussion is probably a moot point.

The real reason is simple - Elite works fine with first person view, deal with it. #d would not give any advantage here but its not needed really - improve the debug cam instead.
