Will there be additional bug fix patches between update 5 and console release?

In that sense Odyssey is actually an apt name for the product - it's a long journey of hardship and cameraderie in the face of adversity. Will we weather the storm and see our loved one again?

Well, if you want to go that way then one of us will.

It's hard to picture a successful console launch if there are no additional fixes - particularly to performance - before then. All the word of mouth promotion for Consolessey would look like the Steam reviews today.
Which is even more puzzling because Odyssey is for last gen consoles. Not Playstation 5 or the Xbox Series X. LAST GEN. How in the Lord Braben hell is that supposed to work? I can't even imagine playing this game on a regular ol' hard drive.

  • The Development Update, amongst sharing the top 5 issues mentions: "As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time.".
I would interpret this bit as:
  • Odyssey is more broken than we can fix in 5 patches, and certainly more broken than we hoped when we initially released it
  • Whether to go for further fix patches to the PC version, or try to roll those into the console version, or do the console version and then fix the remaining bugs is a difficult decision (especially since the PC/console split is itself causing issues)
  • We haven't actually decided what we're going to do yet, so we can't tell you

Yep. You hear nothing because they have no idea how to fix it. If it actually launches on consoles at all I'd be a bit surprised right now.

I'm trying to interpret the Development Update and Update 5 notes correctly but instead of guessing I'd rather just ask.
The fact that this hasn't been stated clearly and has to be interpreted like this from vague comments in other contexts is a failure of communication on their part.

That said, due to all the things they are "actively investigating" I interpret it at best as a situation where things are too hectic and unclear to put together anything better than the previous roadmap, which already got a pretty negative reaction from the community. Despite it being a low bar to clear.

A lack of answer is an answer in itself.
They haven't answered the VR people for a week, and then told them VR was not developed.
They didn't answer the question from the OP's thread about planetary issue for weeks, and they acknowledged 2 issues and said it was difficult to fix.

It seems when they don't answer, it means it's an answer we don't want to hear.

So I fully expect to have little to no patch for a while, except for small patches and hotfixes.

One thing that remains unclear for me after the Development Update and today's Update 5 is whether we'll see more patches in the coming weeks or whether this is it until console release.

There's lots of bug fixing still to do. Will we see this happening in the coming weeks/months or are we facing a dry spell while we wait for console release?

For reference some things that confused me:
  • Arthur mentioned during Tuesday's stream: "Update 5 is the last update for Odyssey".
  • The Development Update, amongst sharing the top 5 issues mentions: "As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. A lot of people I'm talking to are saying: "So this is it now until console release? No further fixes until then?" but personally I can't imagine this is the case.

I think we maybe should interpret the messages as though they do plan to continue bringing out updates between now and console release. I'd rather not guess though.

Some open issues:
I would love to know what the community at large thinks. This might simply be a misinterpreration from yours truly though it would be awesome if we could get a CM to confirm what we can expect in the coming weeks and months.

Yeah, they will fix the icons of mini factions, commanders, and NPC-s by August, just wait and see.

This is the part of their communication that irks me the most, and it's gone on for years and years. A non-committal response that gave no firm answer (like, "it's hard to say right now because we don't know what issues we'll still be facing between now and console release," or even "that's something we don't have an answer to right now") would have been preferable to flat out ignoring the question over and over again, for weeks and weeks. It's really disrespectful, imo.

I've now asked this question myself multiple times as others have and it has been sidestepped very professionally. Don't expect anything more than a few hotfixes and perhaps if we're lucky 1 or 2 performance related updates until console release.
I like you're optimisme. But i really think that console launch and Horizon merge is a double or nothing for FDev. The challenge is real and FDev seem to understand it and take it seriously. If they make good progress in their investigations, we (including FDev) should see things more clearly next month. If not... well... we'll see.

(i can't give you +1 to avoid confusion for readers, but the heart is in it ;))

I wish I had the optimism you see in my post :)

Yep, they have the worst job in the world and they made a conscious decision to take it on anyway. They will live on in legend.
Or will perish in the flame of hellters

Previous gen, you mean ? Last gen is precisely PS5 and Xbox X

Indeed, it's a possibility. But i pretty sure that FDev will find a solution. The real question is does the solution they'll choose will be acceptable for the players.

The answer is right here but this dang rock is in the way. (Took this pic 5 minutes ago).
