Horizons Would you like to build your own base in Elite Dangerous?

But imagine if we had stores to go to at these stations. I'm sure we could kill a few hours going there to look at some fancy weapons, module catalogues for our ships, meeting engineers etc...

...sorry...

Still sounds like somewhat vapid gameplay. We're talking about a huge lump of design/development time, and so far this is really the only thing you've suggested to do in a station... Personally if I was looking for a weapon I'd like to do it in a friendly efficient method, not via a mechanic that makes it slower and more awkward. ie: A nice quict list available from my ship, and not one whereby I need to manually move around resulting in a slower experience?!

Again, if we get first person in stations, I'm ultra wary of what it will actually bring to the game. A good solid list of mechanics and experiences would need to be listed before I feel more comfortable about it... ie: I'd need more than "waiting" and "browsing stuff"...

Those who want neither player guilds nor player owned stations actually want the whole Universe for themselves. No offence, everyone is greedy, but some of us are grasping;)

Some people do not see much use for a player base.
But that is fine.
You would be the people that would not build one.
Many others would.

There is stuff in the game I have no use for either.
I currently have no use for Wings without the option to wing up with NPC.
Neither do I have use for ship crews without the option to have npc crew.
Neither do I use CQC, as it is not my thing.
I do not pirate, so I have no use for piracy mechanics.
etc.

For me that is no reason not to have those things in the game.
Of course we need to have stuff added to the game to give a player base mechanic a bit of meat on the bones, but that is true for everything in the game. I believe in the coming years of development this will slowly improve.
I hope to get NPC wingmen and crew in the near future for example.

This.

Also, NPC crew was something I really looked forward to. Even place holders would do. I still hope though.

This would totally crush thier database, and there would suddenly be five hundred million bases on Pluto or whatever.

This game really hasn't been designed with this in mind.

Nah, they could make it work in a number of ways. For example, have them require maintainance, so you and your group could only have so many at a time, have too many, and you'd end up spending all your time maintaining the bases. And how many bases would each player or group need max?

They could make them destroyable as well, cheapish, but if someone finds, they can blow it up... with others inside... muhawahaha.

I don't know. Do you?
It could be done perhaps if there was a limit in the number of playerbases per player and if the bases themselves where underground, separated from the larger gameworld.

Yeah I'm sure they would find ways of doing it. Like having a limited amount of bases in each star system and/or planet. A station should also be controlled by a guild or player made faction and unless you're a member you can't land.

Actually that sounds amazing. Think how PVP will evolve around it. :)

I am... and i'm thinking i'll stay in private group :D

Brings us back to needing better group mechanics first. Otherwise no way for the game to know which faction we are members of.

As we have gotten Planetary Landings would you like to build your own base anywhere you want. This could be an excellent credit sink and also include crafting and loot. Some base modules you buy and some you craft. If you have played ARK you know what I mean. If I had a base somewhere in the Elite Dangerous universe I would use more time on it, and many others would to.

What do you think?
i would love to... but i think it should be tied to our save and stored locally on our machine, that way there are not bases popping up all over the show and FD do not have to store the info on their servers.

imo it would still be cool even if it dit not have any bearing on the BGS..... maybe other players would see it if they happened to sync in your instance, or maybe you could only drop to it if on your own... i guess it would depend on technical issues like how long it would take to sync with other players.

i personally cant see any other way of it working TBH.

I think that something as large as a whole galaxy has options for anything but if there is something sadly lacking in the ships and the bases (for want of a better word) it's 'soul'. In such a highly populated place it seems like all life forms have been zapped into deep space. There is no contact with other life forms. Imagine drones going about their business in the bases, or a maintenance crew on the outside, doing a bit of welding. :) Or even local repair ships examining the outer skin.
Also, as someone said, give us an area in the base, or a 'day cabin' in the ship. I would just love to get out of my pilot seat once in a while rather than just being hermetically sealed into my cabin. I don't even get to go to the toilet - but then again, maybe that isn't something I want in the game.
My own base? Not bothered. A base I could make my home? Yeah, I like that idea.

At the moment, I'm not interested.

Reasons:

- Nothing to do there or interact with but store ships and eventually loot/crafted items ?
- The initial "waow" effect of having your own base wears off quickly.
- If anyone could build a base at their convenience anywhere, wouldn't it make exploring thousands of light years away a trivial matter ?

I don't know what ED has in store for the stations in the future but as an alternative, what I would like to see though is this:

- The 'Elysium' garden rings on the Orbis stations could have expensive rentable bungalows/houses.
- The Coriolis could have less expensive rooms and lockers rentable again. (Think a bit like the one man bunks like in SC's station.)

Purpose: You can talk to NPC's / players while on foot and visit different parts of the station./trade away from the BBS/real black market interaction. etc...

Building a base on the ocean floor and diving down to it in a Moray Star boat on a water world. Then swim out of your ship inspecting your base while sharks swim around. Well, there is no limit to the fantasy :)
Right now I am building an elevator in ARK. Do I need it, nah, but its fun. :D

I would love to have a Submarine SRV and explore a water world... an underwater base would be so cool! [up]

A private hangar you say ?

ED gave us a private hanger in the last update :p

But yes all jokes aside, +1 on that underwater city and that Moray Starboat !

I would be happy just to see common planetary starports with shipyards so I could pick a planetary home base at one of those beautiful starports nested in the middle of mountain ranges, or at the edge of huge craters...

Currently only I Sola Prospect has a shipyard, I have all my ships stationed there, but all outfitting and ships have a 20% price penalty so I always have to go somewhere else to repurpose ships.

i like it , and make it outside the bubble , hell make it with a instance(how else in elite) that by example only you see it , or the group or wing. also make it so that it needs effort to build(gather different materials sounds like fun) and maintain costs. everyone who is againts just whiny in my opinion. nobody can grief your solo experience with it.
