X55 Rhino Button Layout with Reference Card

Okay so after spending a fair bit of time with my preferred setup of putting thrusters on to one of the hats on the stick, I've found that I need to move thrusters over to one of the four-way switches on the throttle. The reason for this is pretty simple: when taking on larger targets you need to have maximum manoeuvrability as well as maximum firepower, and given that I have primary and secondary fire mapped to the index and thumb triggers on the stick, respectively, I found that I could not carry out secondary firing at the same time as I am using thrusters with that setup.

This doesn't matter when you're dogfighting with the little ships, but when you're running at an Anaconda and it's spitting blobs of plasma at you the ability to drift using thrusters is critical. It also matters when you are fighting with FA off. So, if you do have your thrusters mapped to your stick then you might want to reconsider and move them on to the throttle so that you can get used to it in advance.

Try CPC

I bought my from GameShark, which are the official Saitek store in the UK. Paid full price, I've seen them cheaper on EBay. However, everywhere was out of stock when I first started looking. Eventually I phone Saitek's UK office and found out when the next batch was being delivered. Got my order in fast.

I managed to get mine from CPC (can't post the hyperlink but you can easily find them) - they still had them in stock. 170 quid plus 3 for the next day delivery. Arrived on 31st of December. Happy New Year!

Bought a Hotas X last week on Amazon (not in stock, but was meant to be tomorrow, so I'd get it early next week).

Then found the CPC X55 discount code in one of the threads on this forum, and it still works. So I cancelled my order with Amazon, and have bought a £125 (+VAT, so £150) X55. It wasn't in stock, with an estimated delivery of the 19th, but this morning I got an email saying they are back in stock, so hoping to get it sooner rather than later. Paid £3 for next day delivery, so lets see what turns up. Going to cram as much advice about mappings into my head. Probably won't bother with the HUD software if I can avoid it.

Mine was £144 from Amazon free delivery. Pre-ordered last week and it arrived yesterday. Still working through configurations but happy with it so far.

I wish that I'd gone through Amazon for my x55. Madcatz technical support and returns is the worst customer service I've ever experienced:

1. Plastic fatigue caused by non-lubrication of joystick - customer's fault
2. Squeeking and rattling inside joystick base - adviced to try on another CP. What on eartth is a CP?
3. H4 hat on throttle now not working. Emails, tickets and calls ignored.

I hate to be negative on these forums, but I would advise anybody willing to take a chance on what is a potentially great HOTAS to go through Amazon for their non-quibbles return policy. MadCatz are useless.

:-(

Received my X55 yesturday. Very impressed.

Thanks to everyone in this thread, for the config sheets etc. They made initial setup of so many buttons and axis, so much easier to comprehend. :)

Hi guys received mine yestarday , very nice but i have problems with voice attack , none of the commands work , I copy and installed HCSpack x55 Sandcracka.binds in myname/appdata/local/frontier/elite/options/bindings and activated in the option controls of the game .. I hear only the voice of Astra , that all.
Another problem that i have is how to navigate in the galaxy map... any of the stick work... ( in the saitek utility all key's and toggle work ).
thx for suggestions..

I am very new to the whole joystick thing, and I can´t seem to find an answer for this question;
How does the POV button work?

I try and hold it down while pressing it but nothing seems to happen. In the options menu
it says it should be mapped correctly, so am I doing something wrong?

POV are 4/8 way rockers, they are not also buttons.

My X55 has arrived!!! I'm at work, but I've unpacked it, assembled it, tried various springs (blue seems best to me so far, red was just too frictionless), and I'm considering taking the throttle to bits at lunch time to make that looser. The yaw axis seems stiff but no notchiness (yet).

So I've got the arduous task of figuring out how it all works, and what bindings will work for me. I've got some ideas, but I can foresee a lot of fiddling over the next few weeks getting it right for me.

I don't intend to use the HUD software - is that a big mistake, or will I still get 99% of the use out of it? Of course, if I have drift/deadzone problems then I probably will, but fingers crossed...

-------- Edit --------

Opened up the throttle, and instantly saw the problem - the extra sticky goop on the adjustment quadrant things that push into the throttle lever. So I scraped off as much as I could with a flat screwdriver, and then I used WD-40 to clean the rest off as best I could (the solvent in WD-40 is very good for cleaning things without damage), and then I applied some decent grease and refitted everything. It's now buttery (margeriney) smooth, and pretty much perfect I think - the proof of course is when I play Elite with it!

I obviously haven't done much work today :D

Would there be any interest in a hand rest spacer for the X55? It's quite big, and whilst I can reach all the buttons with a slight stretch, that's whilst not playing (for 8 hours straight), and I felt a spacer under my hand would improve it. By using various things in the office (ultimately a pack of highlighter pens!), I deduced about 13mm is about right (for me), so I've knocked up a quick design that I would 3D Print here. I haven't done that yet, but I'll probably do it tomorrow once I've actually played Elite with it. My design tapers down smoothly for the pinky finger to sit in. Obviously I will test and tweak the design as necessary to get a good fit on the device and make it comfortable for extended play sessions.

Would you like one? If so, how thick would you want? 13mm seems good for me, but I can easily scale the finished design to any height in the printer software, rather than actually designing anything new. I was thinking £7.50 (with free postage). Fitting would be via double sided tape I think, rather than drilling into the existing rest. I guess silicone sealer or something could also be used.

just ordered my x 55 today.. i have pretty small hands (size not appearance lol) so if that rest does the job, and is robust enough, i maybe interested. think i have some 1.5mm neoprene fabric lying around somewhere that would form well to that profile.

This coming week is going to be a good week, new psu, new graphics card, some extra ram and the x55.. isnt it a great time to be a 40 something geek lol :) very happy i stumbled upon this thread too, so much usefull info and zero bile.. such a nice peacefull corner of the forums :)

I have made 2 hand rests now. One is about 13mm high, and tapers to nothing for the little finger. The other is about 25mm tall, and also tapers down at a greater angle for the pinky. I use the 25mm one, and my brother prefers the 13mm one on his X55. I've attached mine with some double-sided tape, and it's great.

I'll sort out some photos of them. If you've got some neoprene you could probably build up the layers gradually (superglue them together) to form a nice shape that's comfortable and allows you to reach the pinky buttons.

I may get rid of the raised edge around the little finger, just to increase mobility. But frankley I could print any design, and am happy to do (simple) requests.

That is very good. +Rep for being so darn clever!

Sitting here today, I decided that I really do need to raise my hand by roughly 15mm, to more comfortably reach the hats etc with my thumb.

Upon measuring, I require 20mm, tapering to nothing at the pinky. I am thinking that no raised edge would be best, to avoid feeling restrained.

Where to I send my payment? :)

Very tidy work dude, looking at it reminds me of the soapbar mockups i used to make years ago, minus the inset lettering ofc lol

Using Sandcracka's bindings, which have been a huge help, I'm not sure how to reverse thrusters. Can anybody offer a suggestion? Thanks
