Your 2023 Game Watch List

Starfield and Stalker 2 mainly

Last of us looks interesting as well, never played the console version but it looks good and has lots of positive press. The question is should I watch the show first or play the game?

The TV show was created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman...Neil Druckman being the creator and designer of the game, Craig Mazin is the creator of the TV series Chernobyl. Mazin is a self confessed fan of the game and approached Neil Druckman to create or adapt it to a TV series.

Having watched the first episode of the TV series, I love it. There are a few differences, mostly a filling out of the game story that wasn't necessary for the game, but in essence...it stays very true to what the game was all about.

The last of us as a game? For me personally, it's the best video game I've ever played on any platform... without exception. I played the PS4 remastered version extensively along with it's sequel. The last of us part 1 (as it's now renamed) is coming to PC on the 3rd of March via Steam or Epic so no need to try out the console version...the latest remake version released for the PS5 last September has been totally rebuilt to run on both the PS5 and PC.

As a game, The Last of Us part 1 is a game I would recommend anyone to play at least once in their lifetime...watching the TV series first won't spoil the game either, the game has it's differences and as an experience is more intimate than watching without the interaction of playing.

Judging by the reception from critics and reviewers...the last of us as a TV series is set for mighty acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes score after viewing the entire series was 98%...says something on it's own.

What is it actually about? I've sorted it under zombie apocalypse.

Roughly speaking...yes. But it's done in a way that sets it out from the crowd. As a game, it's an experience with very few of the typical RPG or zombie survival game tropes and as a story based adventure, it's second to none. Saying that, the gameplay is also inventive and very well done throughout from the combat mechanics, stealth, survival aspects, gathering of resources, crafting and traversal of the gameworld...it's got it all in one package.

It's not a quest based adventure...there aren't any 'go fetch' side quests, no maps with question marks to go investigate...it doesn't hold your hand but leaves you to play through each area you arrive at in the game world the way you want, investigate and discover things without markers or hints bar those discovered while exploring the game world...you play as a character (two characters) in the story laid out in a linear fashion in a semi-open environment. It's immersive and exciting in a way 99% of the single player games out there have forgotten how to be.

There's a reason it's so highly acclaimed as a video game...and that's across the board from both reviewers and players. I was introduced to the game initially by watching a playthrough on YouTube...after watching it, I simply had to play it 🤷‍♂️

Kerbal Space Program 2: I'm setting aside my vacations days for that one. I'll be shuttered with no external sign of life.
Baldur's Gate 3: certainly top of the list, or near there if I can extract myself from KSP2.
Atomic Heart: oh yeah. Of course I love these FPS/horror/with a touch of RPG games, since System Shock 2, then Dead Space, then Prey, etc.
The Invincible: same, that's really my kind of game, reminds me of Amnesia or SOMA, of course SOMA was an absolute masterpiece, hoping someone can at least achieve something similar.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II: Absolutely.
Horizon Forbidden West: why not, the first one was stellar, I think the PC port is due next year ?
Starfield: curiously I have low expectations for that one. Will probably be another Fallout-like gameplay pretty much like The Outer Worlds (not a bad game either, not breath taking). Please surprise me, Bethesda.
The Last Starship: I really like what they are doing with this one, the team is talented, and the result might be quite addictive too. Maybe the next FTL, without copying FTL.
Hunternet Starfighter: VR space combat, yay
Black Myth: Wukong: Looing at that one closely. Not a pre-order, but I'll certainly grab it if the reviews are good, I like this kind of action-adventure game, yeah there's the Dark Souls and Elden Ring casting a long shadow, maybe this one can be something other than the bland clones we see everywhere.

I think they are making a new Tomb Raider using UE5 ? love those, finished the trilogy, that was worth it.

I'm waiting for D4! It is an upcoming action role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, and is the fourth main installment in the Diablo series.

After reviewing( watching Twitch and reading reviews) Atomic Heart for 2 days, i was very impressed by the game and added it to my Steam Collection today.
I saw lots of reviews sighting hows it's similar to Bioshock. Since i never played it my self, to me game looks like a movie " I, Robot " with Will Smith. An upprising of Robots against their Human masters set in the fictional USSR in the year 1955.
I was also really impressed by the game perfomance, stable 60 FPS ( capped) on my 1070 GTX card on Max settings.

Can't believe this game wasn't even on my Radar. What a pleasent surprise.

Noticed that it's included free with my MS gamepass ultimate sub so I'll check it out, free is always good. I watched a few of the gameplay reviews on YouTube, it's definitely got Bioshock vibes about it :)

Looks like the story was a lie. I can't believe i trusted Russian developers.
In a nutshell the true story is:
Soviet Leadership designed a secret operation called Atomic Heart, which is basically genocide of USA using Robots. And the one guy that is trying to expose this, is the one person you are sent to kill, which you do at the end. Game has 2 ending: one in which Atomic Heart go as planned. And 2nd one, your Glove turns super villain, and is set to destroy all of Humanity.

It's also on Steam, but you can save like 80% of it's price using Game pass, and finish it in a month. Seem like a good deal.
Most games I buy once. Then I play them. Then play something else. Some time in future I play them again. I'd need to subscribe the whole time to keep access. If you just play once, yeah, might be a good deal. But for the most part it seems more like a gag and tie down feature to make users dependant. With a fitting collection it's maybe a sensible thing but I play many niche and indies.
