Your least enjoyable Elite activity?

Eventually anything enjoyable can be turned into torture if pacing is off.

You may like mashed potatoes once or twice a month. The problem comes when you realise that with each spoon of it you start to see blue rectangles, try to reduce speed to 40 and hear the dingding of your cargo scoop.

If you grind hard enough you can remove all the fun from anything. That's why the happier players all say don't do it.

1 - Surface prospecting. I do enjoy driving the SRV as part of the larger experience, but following blips to shoot rocks, not so much.
2 - Combat. It's horribly tedious, mostly because the combat scenarios are very lame (they would already be very lame 25 years ago compared with combat flight sims from the 90's), for the most part you're duelling in the void for the sake of duelling in the void. Don't get me started on shooting glorified camera drones from a dune buggy...
3 - Since 3.3, Exploration. A brand new ball pointing marathon to access the same miniscule content.

Docking. The whole process from start to finish is mind numbing repetition:
  1. Select station in contacts
  2. Head to station, line up gate in SC (extra kicks and glggles when station orbits too close to its host, which seems to be a common position)
  3. Drop on station, line up gate some more
  4. Set pips to 1-4-1
  5. Set throttle to 99 m/s
  6. Thruster on max, push through gate
  7. Find landing pad
  8. Thruster over to it
  9. Drop landing gear
  10. Throttle zero
  11. Thruster down to complete landing
  12. Pay fines for reckless flying

Maybe this sounds crazy, but I love docking. It's a second where you have to pay attention and your ship skills come into play, flying in quick and smooth with a nice dock is always satisfying and when I don't dock well I get annoyed with myself. It took me so long to learn to fly decent and dock without getting blown up I look forward to every chance to do it right. It never gets old.

When I bought Cutter the first thing I did was take it to Sothis and Ceos so I could work on my Federal Rank (With the Cutter, I love it). My main purpose was to just get use to the nuances of a Cutter and learn to fly it. Nothing does that better than constant trips between two stations and docking over and over.

You know how it is - always tempting to salt a positive thread, so I thought why not gather some salt separately in a proper container.

So my least enjoyable ED activity - no it's not engineers, I can just ignore them. Not really, but I do and that pits me against bulletsponged enemies in combat. Combat is my least enjoyable activity - I blame the powercreep for that. I used to do a lot of it before they notched up the NPC HP so much, but it simply didn't pay nor yield a fun experience anymore. Ships flying reverse as fast as they can fly / accelerate ahead adds in to the mix. My tolerance for nonsense is actually pretty big, but I just couldn't stomach the combat anymore.

So what's yours? Operating the FSS? Outfitting? Hitting "J" all the time? Alt-tabbing?
Hmm..

I think most things are fun one way or another and generally do whatever takes my fancy.

Still, least favourite.. hmm. That combat option has a certain attraction but if I keep the fights low key it is still fun for a bit..

I guess if I go with frustration, rather than not fun, then the in game market tools are annoying. Possibly I'm using them wrong but trying to get even slightly accurate market information seems a lost cause. This is less than ideal when selling my mining haul. I try to do everything in game but I've more or less given up on that at this point and just gone to Inara or EDDB like everyone else. I don't mind flying around unlocking system data or if there is some fuzziness with temporaral resolution and high demand but, sheesh, it seems just plain wrong.

Anyway.

That is surprising and hard to understand for me.
Are you sure you like spacesims at all? Perhaps some arcade spaceshooter would be better suited?
Docking and landing are such fundamental mechanics of a spacesim, I think.

Or are you just being sarcastic? I am not very good at detecting that.

Mining is the absolute worst thing to do in ED. SUX! Mindless, repetitive, boring and time consuming work. NOT FUN! Planetary material gathering is just barely more tolerable.

Next most hated activity - Exploration. Once you head out the farther you go the worse it gets because you know the trip back is gonna take just as long.

Combat. FA off turn, joust, FA off turn, joust, repeat ad infinitum. The old combat model when I first started playing Elite back in 2016 was so easy it was boring. Fdev made it more difficult, not by making NPC's fly better, but simply by making them FA off turn and joust all the time. The old model was thrilling by comparison. I avoid it now.

I don't like doing missions. I find the whole mission part of the game to detract in all sorts of ways from the feel of the gameworld. There's just no way to cover up that it's just rinse and repeat / randomly generated so I find that it reduces the sense of depth rather than enhances it. I only do them when I absolutely must.
Combat I also don't have much love for and don't find myself attracted to it much. Except for Thargoids - I like that for some reason.
I'll also vote for mission grind.

In small numbers, missions are fine. Fun, even, in that they can take you to locations you'd otherwise never have gone near.

But those days when you spend a whole play session grinding missions (usually +inf for BGS work in my case) it becomes extremely obvious how boilerplate they are. More mission variety would really be welcome sometimes.

Probably surface prospecting. Driving in SRV just for the sights (craters, canyons, mountain ranges) is neat, but all groundside activities are really really dull, including the geological/biological hotspots in their genericity (is that even a word?). To add, it's just that one SRV with that same pew pew for shooting floaty things or mineral crocks.

Missions, especially passenger missions with the one exception of station evacuation missions, I don’t want to be some sort of employee so I only do missions to gain rank or permits.

I would include Power Play but that wouldn’t be fair as I have not got round to it so far in the 4 years I have been playing.

I agree, with regrets.
I like this game very much, mostly fun and sometimes exceptionally so. But the combat part of the game, particularly in ranking up is like Chinese water torture. I've blown up enough NPC ships to sink the entire NPC Navy and I'm only at 60% Deadly. When I started Combat ranking I was a quite dashing young man. Now I look like this. Frinds don't let friends Combat rank.

Least enjoyable Elite activity...hrm...

  • Unified module storage? Nope. It's wherever you left it. Heaven forbid you'd have a unified module storage solution. That might make sense.

Ok, there's my salt OP.

Great post sorry to cut it down

Im coming to the conclusion that having all my (4) ships and more importantly Modules (a lot)
in the same place is not very good
the most unenjoyable thing is when I decide to go mining the time it takes to empty my slots and then run down the huge storage list "click" and then start at the top of the list again no way to order them it cuts my spontanious (combat mood) Ill do this now feeling so I think im going to store different roles spread out over 3-4 different stations in the same system to not have to scroll past all the units I may never use again one more time

Not necessarily. If you use the neutron stars and don't allow yourself to get distracted, you can return very quickly :)

Grinding fed rank was extremely tedious.... doing the same/similar missions over and over for days and days. I'm assuming Imperial is similarly boring. I've been playing since 3301 and I put that off until just this year because it was such a grind, but I finally decided I wanted a Corvette (which is quite fun I must say!). They really need to re-think that whole mechanic of getting navy rank. Maybe it should be more like the powerplay merit system, that wasn't nearly is horrible when getting prismatics..etc.. and then you'd give your Fed rank to go Imperial which makes a whole more sense imho.
