Update 14, nowhere near enough.

From someone relatively new at the game (only about 500 hours), lots of people here just seem grumpy and don't actually know what they want. They seem more upset people enjoy things that they don't.

Still kinda of salty that planets still stay glued to the background when you super cruise, but aside form that I like this update.
I guess a lot of people have been here a long time.
When fdev have wander of the path ie Odyysey, then a lot of folk got really hacked off.
The Odd experience has pretty much brought all development to a grinding halt and we are talking over 4 years dev time plus another year and a half trying to fix the damage.

If fdev spent less time watching what SC and other titles were doing we wouldn't be here in this odd moment of the game cycle.
Is patch 14 any good?
Well from my perspective I have seen no new assets in game for the players. No ships, weapons, vehicles, anyhting really.
And of course nobody has seen a Thargoid yet, which is just pathetic after all this time.

I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here. All new gameplay is new until he experiences it. Then it immediately becomes old gameplay and he'll ask for the next new gameplay to satiate his hunger for new gameplay.
You can't expect new things without paying for them. True live service games offer a subscription model to support the constant flow of "new things".
Except this is a pay up front game and then they deliver the content!

At least in the begining they asked what we would like.

After months of scratching my backside looking for things to do in-game, trying to show the game some loyalty, I'm afraid I've come to the conclusion that update 14 hasn't gone in any way towards making ED playable again, it's just a case of "same old, same old". Thargoid combat never rewarded you with anything worthwhile, all you got was money and who needs money? I have billions of credits with nothing to buy with it, so ultimately what's the point?
I was hoping the Frontier was going to provide one, but they've failed miserably and we're expected to wait for future patches to give us something that they might not even have on their agenda.

My friend and I will still keep playing, but at a reduced tempo to reflect the overall disappointment of the release which have to the conclusion that we can sum up update 14 in one word....

"Meh"
Well I haven't even checked out 14 so I can't comment that would not be fair, HOWEVER what I'm waiting for is EVA getting inside abandoned stations, ships, mega freighters etc. proper combat on the ground instead of what we got now capture the flag same same 1000 of games do, not going to write it all all over again the suggestion part of the forum is full of ideas.

Oh man, you're describing my dreams. On foot exploration of Guardian sites in search of weapons and suits for goid ground combat, battles with bugs inside stations, hell I'd pay for this in some cold hard cash.

Is that a joke or are you serious? money is not important. we have billions. New gameplay is missing here. we just got few new scenarios based on the existing gameplay.
When's the last time you did piracy? Or attacked a horizons settlement? Or just wondered the surface of a planet, looking for signal sources?

This game has lots of content that nobody does because it doesn't pay well enough.

What do you people want? Probably the single largest addition in years, and you're not happy.

If you are looking for on foot content, odyssey's payouts for exobiology increased 25 fold. Try that.
Doesn't matter, there are some that will never be happy or upbeat about the game. it will never be enough. Better just to ignore them, and carry on enjoying what we have.

On-foot combat is more than capture the flag. The part you describe is just the on-foot Combat Zone element.

Wait until you are around long enough to go through the stagnation cycles. And other interesting gems. FDev is lucky space sim competition is so slim.

Yeah your completely wrong, plenty of modern live service games are FTP, BTP, etc. As in they use the ingame store or out of game store model. Example Elite, Phantasy Star, Monter Hunter World, Elder Scrolls (Hybrid), pick a MOBA. Many many many more online multiplayer live service games. Pure sub games have not been the defacto standard for over a decade.

Dropped into one of the abandoned Odyssey settlements fully expecting to get mauled to death by on-foot goids. Nope. Just the same old ship goids that make landing and taking off a hassle with them around.

I mean [REDACTED] me for having expectations, amirite?

No one forced FD to fund the game they way they did. IF it isn't financially viable (and I am not saying it isn't) that is not the punters who ponied up money based on the game pitch.
Personally I am kind of enjoying what we have but it is not close to as good as the game FD pitched at the start imo.

btw Warframe has had buckets of content and I have not spent a penny on it (my GPU came with £15 of credit free so I gave them that)

NMS has zero extra microtransactions and like the game or not, the amount of post launch content they added is mind boggling.

so personally I still think a game funded on paying for a game and getting all the content, and then having new expansions also paid for up front still has life in it IF it is done well.

as for update 14. I have not seen much new yet but it is still early days, more may yet be to come.

lore wise back in the day I made peace with the thargoids and they gave me a ship. I can see why FD chose not to use that timeline however and instead went the other way.......

I am still not convinced they are the bad guys however as it is after all us who started poking the bear with the meta alloys etc and we fired 1st as well iirc.

I do hope over time we get some added complexity with he goids however rather than them always being the badguys to kill on sight with different factions etc.

Paths of Exile's another. Yes you can throw money at and I'm told higher levels may need some money thrown at it but you can enjoy the game without throwing money at it.

I do get where people are coming from with these arguments. I joined Elite late (relative to Kickerstarter), so I have different expectations, especially having ridden in Frontier's rodeo for years now. Frontier has taught me the lesson to never buy a game (or anything for that matter) on what it says it will be someday, only buy it for what it is today. And even then, you might get screwed; Elite on PS4 was much better at release before the updates started breaking everything.

As for free-to-play games, most actually aren't. They all offer some sort of Season Pass or "Plus" service, which a surprising number of people invest in. Even my beloved Overwatch has joined this model. Sure, you can play for free (that's what I do), but the full experience is kept behind a paywall. I guarantee these games would not be updated as frequently if not for this Season Pass model.

The one outlier that comes to my mind is No Man's Sky. I honestly have no idea how they keep the lights on in that company and pay their hard-working developers. Sure, new content will draw in new players, but it still feels like the numbers just don't add up. I totally grant you there's a lot they had to do after the release to fix the game (like Frontier working to fix Odyssey), but they've gone way beyond that with all the free content updates since. Whatever dark magic they are summoning to balance their books, I don't think it would work for the average company. And the irony for me is that all these content updates for NMS has not made me play it any more than I was before these updates dropped. In fact, NMS feels way too "busy" now for my personal tastes, becoming its own version of "a mile wide and an inch deep".

This game has lots of content that nobody does because it doesn't pay well enough.
No one does it because it's not polished or flushed out in a gameplay-loop sence. Players who play this for more than 100 hours dont care about credits.
We want good experiences.

Piracy is an incomplete gameplay, needing a very specific build, NPC's and players only flee, there is no negotiation gameplay. And it's very hard for non-engineered ships to even hatchbreak and steal a few commodities.

Horizons combat has some very dumb AI doing very basic combat. On barren non evolving cenarios where only more enemies spawn without progression.

Signal sources are diffrent skins for the same: drop somewhere and find redundant loot gameplay.

The same can be said for most activities. They are just there, not really developed into an fully engaging and polished experience.
Programming wise, they are just random cenarious triggered by BGS that spawn basic interactions that are up to the player to make interesting.

For years I say that the main problem with this game is GAMEPLAY LOOPS not being full on designed, or polished.
New features or content keeps on being introduced without addressing old problems like balancing, loops, objectives, relationship among activities.

I like ED alot, but it looks like a project for simulation alot of times, and not a game.
This behaviour is a big flaw of game design.

Look at any other sandbox game. Those that are considered good, are not good because the sand box is very big with a lot of sand.
Its the ones that have good sand castles and holes for the player to explore. Doesnt matter how far the edges of the box are, but how the sand is distributed inside of it.

And if the problem is money, than it's time to re-think its capitalization methods on a way that does not affect current promises.
I really like the Ideas bihind the update, but it just adds more sand to the box.

Where did Fdev say there would be on foot AX combat this 'patch'?
