Pay2Win made it to Elite

The offroad stuff is sometimes just tacked on to regular driving games too and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and can heavily depend on how solid the physics/vehicle design is in those games.
Good point.
Which is to say Elite could make the driving itself click for more people by adding more SRVs that cater to different driving styles, but it'd still be left with the issue of there being no good extrinsic reasons to drive.
At least we have doubled the number of SRV's in the game... I quite like the Scorpion's obvious differences.
But, in my defense, I've always enjoyed driving in ED, even if cussing the Scarab so many times!

In Horizons I enjoyed driving the SRV. In Odessey I only do it when absolutely necessary. (kb/m, non-vr. Drive assist off)

It is pretty crumby for something I used to enjoy. So obviously I now focus on other activities. If the SRV was removed from the game it would take me a couple months to notice.

You say more of a challenge, I say SRV driving has become annoying to the point of me no longer wanting to. Some planetary surfaces are now plain impossible to traverse in the SRV. Either you fly over them or walk/climb on foot, which means you can not collect raw materials there. More realistic ? Maybe. Fun ? Less so. And let's not even start on the Odyssey engineering grind, which is way worse than ship engineering. And on top of that you can't even swap weapon/suit mods out. I love tinkering, I have builds for several suits and weapons to fit specific roles. I ended up making one of each with a generalist setup and wish to never touch that aspect of the game ever again until a major revamp.
You're right about that, engineering on foot is absurd.

I see people say this a lot, and it's how I felt about it too initially. Eventually I discovered that knowing what you need and using mission rewards to earn most of it rather than trying to gather it made the whole process a lot less painful. Don't get me wrong I acknowledge there are still definitely some pain points, especially with unlocking engineers, but I now engineer personal gear with no more drama than ship modules.

You liked it because you didn’t take it in VR. Sheer nausea and dreams of some kind of flying hover.

I love landing on planets, but driving is just sickening horror.
I've never had problems in VR in my SRV, even tumbling wheels over chasis across the landscape. On the other hand, seated first-person VR is nausea inducing. Everyone's nausea triggers are different. It's the main reason why for me it's full roomscale-VR or nothing when it comes to on-foot content.

I'm fine with it, but that may be as I've not room for anything bar sitting, so mostly play that way.

It is true, I demo'd VR to one of my friends, even with a lowest nausea experience he was uncomfortable in around a minute!
My grand daughter (11) can play a roller coaster action game without anything bar squeals of glee...

I never ever thought practices like this would make it to Elite.
Seems like every one of these kinds of threads always neglects to propose an alternative solution to funding the game. Would you like a subscription model instead? I know the answer to that. Also, hoping people will buy more paintjobs will not fund development either.

I see this pretty much exactly like the Krait 2, except with the Python 2 you're not getting an expansion pack. Krait 2 was just as "p2w" as this ship.

It's a tenner, please, just dodge a kebab and chips and use the money to help FD out.

Would you like a subscription model instead?
With 5 active accounts a subscription model would seriously damage my play, and my wallet...

There have been a variety of suggestions, some of which rely on FD spending money on development, with, given how EDO was delivered, may never return the development costs, others using minimal resources to deliver scripted content / better PJ / ship kits (I can get behind that) or similar.

Offering ships for Arx is apparently entirely within P2W definitions, but then, not quite as much as the Cobra IV, maybe?

I'm getting the full monty, expect to trash it many times in the next 3 months, and to be laughing each time I manage it. If nowt else, it can replace my FDL, by the look of things!

And yet I found it so much more enjoyable. Less sitting in places doing nothing but hoping and crossing your fingers this signal source or scan is the one that will drop the thing you want. More missions that are actually fun and engaging. Also great that any weapon can be applied to any loadout; really you can get away with just upgrading 3 weapons. One of the reasons I'm not looking forward to new ships is because I might feel like I have to go engineer 7 weapons, never mind everything else...again. 🤷‍♂️

On topic though I guess I'll be able to pay arx for that soon to make it more "accessible". :ROFLMAO:

It's based on how I feel and why about some other games (World of Tanks, War Thunder, Star Citizen, some new Diablos) -- I haven't really researched how P2W they are and I have possible other reasons not to buy into those games, but I recognize I'm not informed and could be wrong. If I wanted to research it I'd end up finding (and being algorithmically recommended) stuff that just focuses on the micro transactions and not what's actually fun about those games.

It's definitely not worth investing time into a game to later realize you can't really play because of P2W stuff (Heartstone for me).
I hear you and totally get, and to a degree share, the concern, but as I said before, the slippery slope argument is a fallacy in logic though that doesn't also mean that it can't happen, it's just that as a predictive measure it can't be relied upon and other factors need to be taken into account. Frontier if anything has historically given a lot of value away; the beyond season was meant to be paid IIRC but Frontier gave it away, the console scenario, putting aside the specifics that led to it, ended up with Frontier creating a portal to transfer a commander to PC which included a free Horizons base game license, and you got to keep your console commander. I'll not say Frontier is perfect, as that's an impossible standard to hold anyone/anything to, but I think they have taken hard decisions and made good as best as they can, given the situation, which has cost them money. Of course that doesn't preclude Frontier from turning Elite into a lootbox fomo monstrosity, but my own feeling, for what it is worth is that if it remains like this, I'm going to relax. I actually have an alt for which that AX ship might actually be a really good deal to get going, so if, as you say a lot of the reviews are 'didn't know what to do', 'too daunting' etc.. then maybe these ships could act as a bridge between experiencing something cool, but restricted, and seeing how the rest of the game works? That is also possible. I hope it is a success for Frontier, but I also hope that restraint is the order of the day when considering how and what to offer in these ways. But if this is how they earn to keep developing the game so we get Earth Likes etc.. then I'll accept it.

A few days before the announcement of the “great changes” I opened a thread with a proposal for financial support for the ED. There are many options other than subscription and P2W. But the topic was closed very quickly.

I think the decision about the strategy has already been made. The loyal audience of addicted fans is so soft and delicious.

Don’t worry, there will be subscriptions, battle passes, and loot boxes. All will be...
