The kiwi is teetering between essential and DLC for me, it’s absolutely iconic, but not so much as a zoo animal… personally though, I wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t base game.

Animal #40 - North Island Brown Kiwi šŸ„

Which category does it fit into?
  • Essential for Planet Zoo 2 Base Game
  • Save for PZ2 DLCs/Deluxe
  • Doesn’t need to make it but sure
  • Can be left out entirel
10.000 times Essential for me, this is an iconic bird/animal, perfect for a zoo GAME, real world zoo's are boring anyway, they lack the animals I really want to see mostly, never have all my favorites on one place in one zoo, with PLANET ZOO 2 GAME, I can create such a zoo (HINT HINT)

Ok, so I have strong opinions regarding which animals should be included and others that should be excluded from the base game of Planet Zoo 2.

Animals That SHOULD be included:
  • African penguin
  • All the butterfly species
  • Black rhinoceros
  • Blue wildebeest
  • Brown-throated sloth
  • Dromedary camel
  • Eastern blue-tongued skink
  • Emu
  • Hamadryas baboon
  • Indian peafowl
  • Jaguar
  • Koala
  • Komodo dragon
  • Lar gibbon
  • Malayan tapir
  • Maned wolf
  • Meerkat
  • Polar bear
  • Red kangaroo
  • Red river hog
  • Red-crowned crane
  • Red-eyed tree frog
  • Siamang
  • Southern cassowary
  • Southern white rhinoceros
  • Spectacled bear

Animals That SHOULD NOT RETURN to Planet Zoo (and Proposed Replacements):
  • Amazonian giant centipede (REPLACE it with the emerald tree boa)
  • Arctic wolf (REPLACE it with musk ox)
  • Black wildebeest (REPLACE it with greater kudu)
  • Brazilian salmon pink tarantula (REPLACE it with green and black poison dart frog)
  • Dall sheep (REPLACE it with the mountain goat)
  • Formosan black bear (REPLACE it with the American black bear)
  • Giant burrowing cockroach (REPLACE it with Madagascar hissing cockroach)
  • Himalayan brown bear (REPLACE it with the Temminck’s tragopan OR golden pheasant)
  • Lehmann’s poison frog (REPLACE it with the strawberry poison dart frog)
  • Proboscis monkey (REPLACE it with the FranƧois languar)

Changes In Current Species:
  • Bengal and Siberian tigers should be renamed Mainland Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) since recent phylogenetic studies that the original ā€œsubspeciesā€ from Mainland Asia are just different populations. They could use either the Bengal or Sumatran model and expand the biomes for it. The Sumatran tigers is the only other proper subspecies of tiger (P. t. sondaica) they could add into the base game.
  • Change the reticulated giraffe’s subspecies name to just Giraffa reticulata.
  • ā€œTimber wolfā€ isn’t an actual, separate subspecies. The name is either used to describe either the eastern wolf, Northern Rocky Mountain wolf, or the northwestern wolf. I propose either rebranding the ā€œtimber wolfā€ to be either the Mexican grey wolf or the red wolf since both are Critically Endangered and need zoos helping with their numbers.
  • Specify the dama gazelle to the Addra gazelle (Nanger dama ruficollis) since that’s the subspecies that’s modeled in the game. Same goes with the pronghorn; the pronghorn subspecies zoos focus on is the Peninsular or Baja Californian pronghorn (Antilocapra americana peninsularis), and from ā€œbongoā€ to Eastern bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) since it’s the subspecies that’s often held in most zoos.

Nice Addition to Add:
  • Subspecies Tab with slightly different models, size differences, skins, and biome preferences to match the subspecies. The Plains Zebra, for example, has two subspecies common in zoos - the Burchell’s (Equus quagga burchellii) and the Grant’s (Equus quagga boehmi). Same for the black rhinoceros; the two subspecies commonly held in zoos are the Eastern (Diceros bicornis michaeli) and Southwestern (Diceros bicornis occidentalis).

I honestly think the Formosan black bear can stay, it's the game's representative for the Asiatic black bear and that's fine by me. I'd have the one bear excluded be the Himalayan brown bear (I doubt Frontier is gonna remove every animal species from the game for their sequel; I think it'll be a JWE2 situation). The titan beetle should also be excluded because they are not in captivity.

I also like the subspecies additions you came up with!

This game isn’t only for people that like realistic zoo’s, so removing animals only because they aren’t kept in real zoos is selfish, it’s a game for a reason, to escape reality, not to enforce it

I'm with the others that just because an animal isn't common in zoos doesn't exclude it from being essential. The vast majority of players don't build "realistic zoos". Given that the Kiwi is very well known outside of NZ, it definitely warrants a spot.
Essential

I don't think I've ever agreed with someone's takes more

God I hate this animal so much. Such a vile, disgusting creature. Sickening. This little freak tries to cosplay as a far superior mammal with those newfangled whiskers and burrows, it thinks it’s oh so different from the other birds, it’s revolting. It can’t even fly either, I don’t even like birds but that’s just a disgrace. Not to mention the claws on those useless, pathetic little wings - so out of style - what is this the Mesozoic? This horrid beast makes me sick. It’s barely even a zoo animal. Maybe if zoos were a thing outside of Europe and North America it would be useful smh my head. It’s got no conservation value either, I mean I can find these things in my local produce aisle.

May this wretched thing crawl back to the wet underground from which it came. They should have given us another mammal instead of this stupid lame bird in the Oceania pack, it’s easily the worst pack in the entire game because of this revolting, nauseating little organism.

Ew

With a little tweaking, this might be the best planet zoo animal hate copypasta yet

I am very much aware of it being a game, but I believe Frontier themselves stated that they wanted the game's roster to be realistic alongside the other aspects of the game. So having species not found in captivity contradicts their message. It's relatively minor though, and some of the odd choices like the proboscis monkey and kiwi do at least have some sort of record of being in captivity.

With the inclusion of the Saiga, I think they said they don’t care about realism at all, and they should not, games are made to escape the boring reality.

I still hope I get my favorite Leopard Seal one day

CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKE: DON’T include aquariums in Planet Zoo games. Here’s why:

While aquariums can sometimes host birds and even some land animals, aquariums are their own entity. Frontier should make a Planet Aquarium franchise if people are that keen on it. Aquariums have much different setup (like accounting for filtration, salinity, recycling, etc.). It can feature the characters from Planet Zoo but running an aquarium. They can reuse the models of the crocodilians, otters, penguins, and seals and sea lions into this franchise. Also, game logistics-wise, I would imagine the animation and rigging system for making sure every fish and marine mammal is unique and true to life would be a massive undertaking. Marine life far outweighs terrestrial life, so the animal roster would be well over Planet Zoo’s roster easily just by the popular tropical fresh and saltwater fish alone. Hell, the ā€œGoodwin Aquariumā€ can be loosely based off of the Monterey Bay Aquarium or the Georgia Aquarium.

Not every zoo has aquariums, and those that do…well, it doesn’t always work out well. It’s ambitious and tricky to pull off. An example of a zoo that does a poor job, in my opinion, of being both a zoo and aquarium: Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. They have two separate aquariums on their grounds and their animal variety outside of the marine life is abysmal.

Henry Doorly seems to be one that found a balance. One could argue that Brookfield falls into this category but their collection is primarily terrestrial with some feature aquatics.

Now, nearly every zoo I’ve visited hosts birds. Aviaries ARE part of the zoo experience.

While there are such institutions that exist that feature primarily birds like Sylvan Heights Bird Park, Loro Parque, Vogelkop Avifauna, and Weltvogelpark Walsrode, bird parks aren’t mainstream enough like aquariums.

I’m not against having seals, sea lions, penguins, and the walrus in Planet Zoo; I’m tired of reading or hearing content creators chanting for more aquarium creatures in the game.

Something Else to Add in the Game: Expabdable Habitats

As I think RedPandaReggie stated in his Reptile Animal Pack, this feature is much needed, especially with such potential inclusions as the northern green anaconda, and Burmese and reticulated pythons in the further PZ2.

Having a larger, expandable habitats could open the door of housing multiple species like different species of poison dart frogs mixing together and/or housed with boas like I’ve seen several times.
