For some reason my YouTube feed recommended a video that CIG have apparently "gone too far" and spent $800m.
(I last logged in here a few years back when CIG was ~$500m in the hole so so tldr; )

Not just the Idris. They are now selling bomb bays and "blade" upgrades to ships on their store.
This has caused:
a) Massive outrage in the community
b) Massive sales on their store
SC is a puzzle wrapped in an enigma.
So fine to pay $many for a powerful ship but not fine to pay $some for upgrades.
It was always pay-to-win so ¯\(ツ)/¯
Well, they caused the problem, now they can "solve" the problem by removing it. Fans will reward them with more support and fawning over their obvious wisdom. This seems to be a popular strategy recently.

The article gets a few details wrong as i recall.
Testers who've got the mothership marker to work have found a new issue.
It doesn't work across servers/shards. So if you bed log you lose the ship...

Oooh, he said he would only touch SC again if it was some major event. So i guess he considers this to be major enough.
