There definitely needs to be more opportunity to see your own ship, the decals and paint jobs seem kind of useless at this point. Not sure if an external view is the bet way to address that.

why on earth is this thread full of 'so long as there is no advantage' or 'external view will make combat unfair' ? Is there some notion that an external view will only be available to OTHER people? it woudl be the same for EVERYONE so there can be no advantage, other than you're useless and they are good so they have the advantage of having skills you dont :)

The game definately needs a very good external/remote view system, if it works on comabt or not I dont mind, its plain stupid to think im 3301 interstellar ships do not have external views feeding to the cockpit, so that the amazing ships and galaxy can be fully appreciated.

As efery ship pretty much looks the same from the inside in terms of instrumentation there is nothing much to spearate them visibly if you cant see them, why paint it or buy decals if the only person who will ever see them is the 1 in 100k chance they are the 1 player of up to 32 who could be in your instance, in your space, at the same time?

As a side note, I'm a former pilot (no longer current). My aircraft was painted. I never saw it once flying. It could have been hello kitties for all I know and then magically returned to a Piper Saratoga paint job when I landed.

Point being, paint is for other people to see and identify you with. I do enjoy the passive aggressive idea of "I won't by a paint job unless I can see it, in space while I pew pew" dev blackmail though ;)

but you were not flying for a company who were going to be parly funded through sales of paint jobs and other cosmetic fluff and i suspect there were people around to see your paint where as its pretty obvious in Elite there are going to be very few in the same place at the same time

I can agree to one thing - in WWII simulator external view does indeed gives you a big advantage in form of extra situational awareness.
But in Elite when we rely on radar and "incoming missile" message etc sticking your head outside will makes you more blind and unaware of the situation.
For example using external view in DCS is a suicide because you're losing all your advantages in terms of radar and gauges.

Advantage???? The game is not only for PVP.

And even then everyone will have the same advantage.

Limit it to the SOLO mode only. In this case I never play open play (and not need it now)

I bet you haven't never played elite. ;)
There is no tactical advantage.

If you don't think 3rd person offers a tactical advantage, you are not a very good pvper. Just knowing the angle of fire and direction, even if you can't see the attacker means you know the best tactical evasion move to avoid fire. For example, multiple hostiles are attacking and you are taking fire from the rear, if its at an angle the best move would be to burn at an opposite angle, but if its directly behind you that would be suicidal. Your scanner takes time to figure out which is the hostile hitting you so you need to guess a bit.

Also can be true- that's why we established very simple solution to this issue- hardpoints on - external cam off.

I'd be "ok" with that but no scanner either. Escape is part of pvp, in my view the most important part. NOT being able to be killed is more valuable then being a good killer.

Yes, we talking about simple external cam with no hud/scanner elements whatsoever. It can be done without harming the way people like to play. We are not that terrible after all ;)
But to be honest we all know that this not going to happen and we will get camera drone at best.

Fair comment, but if getting into an external view takes 5 seconds during which time you have no control of your ship? And then panning speed is no faster than you could pitch (in the cockpit)? And if when you then decide to return to the cockpit to actually use your HUD, it takes 5 seconds during which time you have no control of your ship? At what point is it too costly to consider as an advantage?

Heck it could reverse your controls randomly for all I care, as long as its not pvp useable :p
