Elite Dangerous no longer an MMO?

The discussion here is did FD stop labeling ED as an MMO and I know its hard, I got pulled in myself, but let us not argue if it is or not, rather; Did Frontier do this? What does it mean for the Game?
We have already seen offline mode go, and if building Elite Dangerous is going to be more multiplayer than MMO (massive multiplayers sharing the same server/instance/shard) then what can we expect to see ahead. (probably just what we were told we'll see, will take time, and this may be adopting a more 'honest' marketing strategy).
Those are the two areas this thread was formed to discuss.
If you feel its an MMO fine, if you don't fine, that part doesn't matter.

EDIT: Also, thank you for the comments either way, I understand things can feel controversial when they matter to you.

even if it support one massive universe the population would not be any different then it is now because space is frigging huge and people quickly spread out. using 32 player instance it just easier to deal with. just call it a online sim be happy.
d quit
i
f it was not instacnced and open play hears what would happen every good trade rought would be mass camped by pirates trades would quickly stop doing that an leave pirats get bored and simply mass pk anyone they can find.

Whilst I would concede that our player-interactions in combat/trading/exploration may infinitesimally be shared in the background, how are instances (or islands) any different from a lobby, with the exception you don't get to choose who you play with?

Not being facetious, I promise :)

Instances as multiple dimensions of the same persistent world fit with MMORPGs. You actually travel through the world there. WoT instances you just get teleported into from the lobby.

Yeah, same. I was expecting some decent sized PvP battles. Maybe we'll still get some, but uh...

As the game stands now, I barely consider it to be a multiplayer game.

If you can't find PVP, maybe you should be the one to switch to open play

It's clear that people who want to push their own opinion will ignore reality and evidence
It's a Massive Multiplayer Online game, you disagree? That's your problem

And OP, it's clear you should find other flame bait arguments, this isn't really doing much for your cause

By your logic the same is true of Farmville so I guess you believe Farmville is an MMO?

Logic suggests your reasoning is flawed. Give it another go.

Farmville lacks the persistent world necessary for it to be an MMO.

Also, Farmville is not a game.

The thing that really gives it away is the people who call it "Not MMO" have no clear concept of what MMO is and the most absurd definitions. I think "The name has to be world of warcraft" is the best one I've ever seen. If you're siding with that argument, you should think about it.

Taken from Google:
.
A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet.
.
It is a massive server/world/galaxy which all players share

I won't call a maximum of 32 players per instance "massive" and sharing the whole world... There have been games more than 10 years ago that featured more than 32 players.

Also ED lacks any features that would make the multiplayer part meaningful. 2-3 month after a so claimed completed product was released we'll get wings... Whoohoo... *clapping hands*. And the epic ongoing player engaging story that makes always online a requirement? AMAZING text snippets every few days! INCREDIBLE!!! The shared online economy and factions? Nothing you can't get offline simulated as well. There are any way enough people who already complained that they don't want to share "their" economy with others.

ED would have been a much better game with an epic hand crafted story, good missions, factions and NPC with some personality and not just being a repeating text. Also it would be modable so that everybody could change the game as they like. Take a look at Skyrim for example and its amazing modding community.

Isn't a MMO supposed to push the player limit always further, and provide MMO-specific mechanics? I'm not really seeing either.

No need to argue about semantics, come up with twisted definitions, or claim it's a MMO just because DB said so: by most definitions, it's not a MMO,

Nope.

Elite Dangerous

Persistent world? - check
Supports large number of players online in that persistent world? - check
Players can play and interact with each other within that persistent world? - check

That's an MMO.
How good or bad an MMO, is a topic for discussion.
But that it is an MMO really isn't up for debate.

Given the sum total of our effective ability to interact with each other is through gun-fire it's missing the multiplay part. Online tic-tac-toe is more of an MMO than ED.

If and when we get MMO components such as social tools and group activities then it can be called an MMO. Until then pedants can pretend they're being clever by playing their silly word games but those of us who have played MMO's for many years (including Jumpgate) know an MMO when we are playing one.

Right now we are not and apparently Frontier agree as they have stopped using the term.

Whatever sort of game ED is it's fun for me to play.

ED is an MMO.

Debate how good or bad it is all you like, but trying to claim it isn't an MMO is bunkem of the purest sort.

Simple.

Give this guy a refund. Please.

This must be trolling, because it would go over like a fart in church either way, wouldn't it?
Refund me then what? The next guy? How about being so obnoxious as to ask FD to remove the multiplayer entirely, there isn't much to remove if they start now, is there? Then you can play Happy Go Solo all across the universe, smug as a clam. I'm more in to the 'deliver' but I appreciate your support. :)

What was the argument again??
No argument, it was a query repeated a few times in this thread, the arguing is just a by product.

Can you interact with other players - nope
This is clearly untrue. A brief search of the forums reveals the opposite to be the case.

Not a defining characteristic of what constitutes an MMO. Only something that might determine how good an MMO is.

Yes it is simple. Argue what makes ED a good or a bad MMO.
Trying, and failing, to argue that ED isn't an MMO simply smacks of petulance. A better argument to make would be "ED is so bad an MMO it doesn't deserve to be called an MMO" which makes far more sense than claiming it isn't an MMO.

It makes as much sense as a petrol engine fanatic claiming that the Tesla Model S isn't a car.

There are massive numbers of players playing simultaneously online, so I'm really not sure how this is so confusing to you lot :S

By your logic the same is true of Farmville so I guess you believe Farmville is an MMO?

Logic suggests your reasoning is flawed. Give it another go.

----

Farmville lacks the persistent world necessary for it to be an MMO. - Where was persistent world mentioned? In fact where in the words Massively Multiplayer Online is a persistent world even intimated?

Also, Farmville is not a game. -Care to qualify that baseless assertion? How are you now redefining a game?

The thing that really gives it away is the people who call it "Not MMO" have no clear concept of what MMO is and the most absurd definitions. I think "The name has to be world of warcraft" is the best one I've ever seen. If you're siding with that argument, you should think about it.

If you think I am siding with that argument then you are even more mistaken than you first appear.

Again - this is nothing to do with people's opinion of what an MMO should be it's about what MMO means.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If it isn't Online, and Massively Multiplayer then it can't qualify as an MMO.

Online - check
Multiplayer - check
Massively Multiplayer - fail.

So what can we see from this? The correct term is an Online Multiplayer game.

What is happening here is that people are treating "MMO" almost as a word in itself rather than as the acronym that it is.

Consider the term UFO.

If somebody says UFO you can pretty much guarantee that somebody will picture a flying saucer piloted by extraterrestrial entities when they hear that acronym. They don't even realise that they have, by doing so, removed the possibility of it being a UFO by definition. You get that, right? You can see how that is? Or are you one of those people who thinks UFO means Alien Spaceship?

If you immediately decide it's an alien spaceship then how in the world can it be Unidentified? You just identified it as an alien spaceship.

To be a UFO it has to be:

a) an Object
b) Flying
c) Unidentified.

If I say UFO I will mean Unidentified. Flying. Object. - If you hear UFO and picture an alien spaceship it is you that has the error, not me.

ED may share aspects in common with other games that also call themselves MMOs but it does not meet ALL of the criteria required for that definition.

It really is quite simple.
