I love how you can finetune the reaction curve in the CH control manager. Vertical and lateral thrust on the throttle ministick would be far too erratic, if I hadn't toned reaction near the center down quite a bit. Now I have precision positioning there.

You can adjust the deadzones for the ministick axes in the game as well. I had too since I've mapped boost to the Ministick push. (no accidental boosts in the dock! :) )

Does a joystick make gameplay more fun?

Ok, so I said to myself a couple months ago I would buy elite and see how it went, see if I liked it.
Well now I can't even think of playing any other game, and I have an anaconda.
But I only have a basic computer and no Oculus, and I am using my mouse and keyboard.
Does getting a flight joystick make the game more enjoyable? Because I am willing to dump money into anything that makes this amazing game even better. Does it give better immersion to have a joystick?
Is it easier to control?
Thanks

Most people say it's more fun with a joystick. You may not be as accurate at sniping, but it supposedly feels more like flying a spaceship. I've read several people saying they got better with joystick when it came to dog fighting, and especially Flight Assist Off maneuvers. I've never used mouse, so I don't have a good comparison.

This guy does everything with a relatively inexpensive Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X

In a word....

YES!

In more words I have a top end gaming mouse which has great features for stuff like FPS with DPS switching etc. For flight / dog fighting it not nearly as fun. If you just docking / trading meh, either works. I use a logitech 3d flightstick and a g13 which works nicely as the pad has a 3rd and 4th axis mini joystick. Much prefer that to must mouse and G13.

Hmm, not to bad. Might pick one up, thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I do a lot of combat so sounds good.

I found that adding a Flight stick to my control layout was very beneficial. I am able to fly more intuitively, and I have much better time on target now. Not to mention how it has helped me fly through the mail slot. I only spent around $35.00 for mine, so the risk was low in case I didn't like it.

Hmm. Might I ask what you bought? 35$ sounds nice lol

If you have the cash to shell out I'd say pick up a good HOTAS setup. What you get is up to personal preference; many people like Saitek X series sticks for the bling, the fact that it's the stick in the ships, and the twist function. They tend to have QC issues though, so you could get a real lemon. I see a lot more praise for the X-52 on this issue than the newer X-55.

CH Pro, the full setup I have, has no twist so that kills the deal for some, but the kit is solid and reliable; pedals, throttle, and stick. People have also had lots of success with Thrustmasters (T-1000 I think) and other sticks as well.

How good you get with what you choose comes down to training on your preferred control kit. At first you will probably suck at it till you can get a handle on relearning how to fly. But there's lots of buttons on HOTAS setups, and having an analogue throttle is imo a lot more fun. You will FEEL cooler using one even if you don't end up being measurably better. :)

Yes.

Throttle even more.

Headtracking more so again.

Additional bonus fun point sinclude:

-Huge screen (think 50"+ - extra special fun points for 100"+ projection)

-Digital surround with 5.1 (or more)

-7kg Bengal that jumps on your lap and nuzzles your throttle hand -and your boost finger in particular - whilst landing in a station.

How much cash you got to burn?

You have to get used to fly with a stick but with time it feel way more natural (especially with a Hotas) i bought a X52 just for Elite (and SC later on) and dont regrett.

its personal choice but i have used both MK and JS and for me at least JS is way more fun to play with, Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X user here and its a great little Hotas for the price, another addition i would def recommend is Voice Attack , no mater what control platform you use voice attack is a great addition.

Get a good joystick. I had a logitech extreme 3d pro in my right hand, and an old saitek st290 in my left hand when E: D came out. Recently upgraded to an X52 pro and some rudder pedals, and the higher quality joystick made a huuuuge difference.

Found a program called joytester2 and I could see why. The logitech cheapo stick sensors jittered all over around the origin when the stick was still, and when I moved it it drew a very jagged line across the test frame.

The X52 sensors are rock steady at rest, and when I move the stick it draws a nice smooth line. With a little practice I could draw a picture with it!

TL: DR: Stick quality has a HUGE impact on performance.

Get a decent joystick and your ability improves. Mouse movement is too twitchy and lacks accuracy. I actually find aiming a darn sight easier and more accurate with my T-16000M than I ever did with my Shogun Bros Ballista Mk1 and that's a damn fine piece of kit.

It also makes flight maneuvers a lot more smooth and flowing.

So in other words... YES x100

I'm not exactly rich, but whatever I need to get I will get eventually, I can save up money.
Also, thanks everyone. I'm certainly going to get one now.

Get a Thrustmaster T-16000M at the bare minimum. I have one, and it's the best stick I've ever used up to this point. Apparently, it's more accurate than a lot of sticks you get in £150 HOTAS combos and is genuinely excellent for the price.

Wow. I must get a stick! Thanks :D
