I noticed that too last night! I tried to switch to the debug camera while auto docking and my ship just spun in circles until I exited debug cam and then auto dock came back on and landed with nary a scratch. Didn't even sc the paint on top of the Anaconda like it usually does!

Docking computer great but slow at outposts

Wrong group maybe but ....
Is it only me or are more people having this problem ?

The docking computer is great and pulls of tricks that amaze me every time but when i use it at an outpost it keeps hovering for a minute above the landing pad.

I don't see whats to gain from using the docking computer, when manually docking is much faster and doesn't waste a ship slot. I really can't see the reason for using one.

but no, I'm not having that problem as I don't use one.

So you reply just to reply ? nothing better to do ? maybe you can test it then !!!

I use it on every ship.

Seems to be working fine much better since 1.1 & 1.2.

The NPC's use the same AI to dock. They also seem to be making a much better job of it.

The gain is flying into range, requesting a dock and then being able to step away for a few minutes to let the computer do something. When trading or after a long flight, its nice not to have to do anything to land.

Though once the docking computer crashed my ASP into a pylon on an outpost and knocked me down to 15% health. That was expensive.

Yes I‘m having the same problem at outposts.....had not used a docking computer before 1.2 though so was not sure if this had always been the case.

I use one on my ships so I can engage it then multi task while it docks me. It does take some time at certain outposts and sometimes (not lately) it tries to take my ship in side ways (lol) which is fun to watch. It came in very handy when I had a T9 going through the mail slot.

The DC and AI docking (same thing) are a WIP.

They were pretty risky back in beta and have gotten better with nearly every iteration.

I don't always use the DC but when I do, I try to give it as many advantages as possible by getting into sensible positions that don't require the DC to do much more than meet the dock.

One day, I expect the DC will successfully dock when I start it from a nearly interior position of the outpost :D

I did see that instead of my ships energy being divided equally between the 3 options, it now goes to 4 pips systems and two pips engines when docking computer activated.

It's the same in my Type 9 but I see it only as a minor issue. Actually, I like the fact that the DC deploys the landing gear that late. Maybe it should deploy it the moment the docking indicator appears to avoid the warning message.
Oh, and a little more speed inside a station when approaching the docking bay would be nice. But I must admit that the latest update finally made the DC worth buying. Thanks for that again!

Okay, I'll add deploying landing gear earlier to my to-do list. As for speed, I have another update that improves this, along with some navigation changes for outposts as well as regular stations.

Trading is fun the first 1000 times, then the docking computer is nice. It would be wonderful, since the game mandates voluminous trading runs to afford overpriced ships and modules, to have autopilot for station to station runs as well. So players can just monitor for interdictions. If you put the docking computer in the smallest slot, you're only losing 4 cargo? With DC no/little waiting in a que in a busy system, you can't always get good planet alignment, you can still pilot to close to the entrance, there's no hitting stations or ships while with expensive cargo, allows route planning, research while docking and relieves stress. Noticed the fuel improvement has allowed elimination of A4 fuel scoop for trading purposes, that adds 16 to cargo. So there's trade offs/ pros and cons to it. the DC seems to work very well currently, I haven't had any problems with it.

Done LOADS of dockings - been there, had fun and the first couple of hundred times and then rapidly got bored with all that. I'm happy to use the docking computer to handle something that is nothing but a chore at this stage.

I've made some more changes recently, namely navigating much, much, (and I mean like 1000%) much better at outposts (as well as other stations), a fix for an occasional orientation freeze, a bit more speed during inside docking, a new holding pattern, plus various other orientation improvements to make everything look a bit slicker. Not sure when these changes will go live, but I'm still working on bits and pieces (as well as trying to make the combat AI kill you all a bit better... ;) )

that won't save your anacondas ;)

How about an "UN docking computer?. Just kidding (sort of)! :) Now where IS that co-pilot. Must be at the bar again. :)

Sarah, not sure if you were informed by Frontier QA yet but there is a bug with the docking computer not being able to land larger ships at starports when playing at high refresh rates (100-120hz). When the ship descends towards the landing pad it drifts off to the left until it stops and hovers motionless. I did post in the bug report forum about this.
Otherwise i love your work on improving the DC and AI in general.

Could you please change the DC mechanics so it switches back to the old power distribution settings after a successful touchdown? It is ok that the DC overrides my settings and puts 4 pips into system. But it is kind of annoying to switch back to the old settings after each landing maneuver.

That's what my "Balance Power" command in Voice Attack is for, amongst quite a few other commands for power settings such as "Max Systems", "Battle Stations" and so forth. It means I don't have to fiddle with the settings manually.

Docking is the most interesting part of the game for me! I don't much like combat. Turn off the assists, and docking becomes an artform, a spaceborne ballet among the stars where you try not to kill yourself on the widdershins end of the mail slot. I fully do not understand how people can put C-3PO in command of their multi-million credit ship, especially at the moment it's most likely to crash into anything. Can you not snack and browse the Internet during supercruise? Just point your ship slightly off-center of the target and you will not run into anything.

Three times now my docking computer, on a Type 6, can't handle Pad number 20, RHS close to the door. Starts to hit the sides then tells me to approach the docking bay while I am inside the station. Have to land manually. Never had any dramas before.
