Games that should be remade.

How about Space Hulk. Warhammer 40k setting is a winner and the original on PC and Amiga was pretty good if very tough. Great atmosphere and quite true to the board game without being just a computerised board game. I'm not aware of any other game that used the freeze time mechanic, it was tense.

Beach Head
Raid Over Moscow

Two fantastic Acess software titles on the C64. There have been retro remakes of these sure...

Also the grand daddy next to elite is

--------> MERCENARY <----------

You can get Mercenary ported to PC, in fact all three freely from
http://mercenarysite.free.fr/mddclone.htm

That would be a fantastic remake.

Two more ones I'd like that I'm sure no one else would are
-The Secret of Bastow Manor
-The Castles of Doctor Creep

good to see another Mercenary fan here, I loved the game, although I admit I wasnt always quite sure what I should be doing!

That version is a clean adaption of the board game and not what MacArthur was talking about. The current version on Steam is a very faithful adaption of the board game and is presented in an isometric view.

MacArthur was actually referring to the version that was initially released on 3DO and later on PC, Saturn and the Playstation. It was called "Space Hulk Vengeance of the Blood Angels" and was a tactical first person squad based shooter.

I too would love to see a remake for it was an incredible atmospheric game with a lot of depth in strategy.

One can play an emulated version on 4DO which is a 3DO emulator for the PC.

Once installed just dig around online for a 3DO bios file for 4DO as well as the rom for Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. The emulator is flawless.

Here is what Space Hulk Vengeance of the Blood Angels looked like...

Mission 10

Mission 16

When the game is paused there is a limited pause countdown before the game returns to real time. This feature introduced a lot of tension as players had to think quickly on the fly as they gave orders to their squad.

I would love to see it remade. It was a ground breaking yet pretty unknown title.

Yeah! zeewolf is fantastic, heavily inspired if I'm not mistaken by Virus/Zarch by the little known Saint David of Braben. :D

Vengeance of the Blood Angels is actually a sequel to Amiga and PC original of Space Hulk. Very similar games though. The sequel I think had freer movement in 3D and Terminators actually stood a chance in hand to hand. I found the first person better in this game but couldn't get the hang of the tactical command properly. Original was closer to the board game, featuring the same flavour of Space Marines and I think direct copies of the missions, but still with the excellent and unusual real/freeze time instead of turns.

A bit disappointing that this new one is just a shiny animated board game.

Goodness I've never seen this.

One to certainly look out for Amiga Forever. Set it up to run as fast as you can (like Frontier).

Now there is a thing, David could do a stunning re-make of this as you said the original Zeewolf was greatly inspired by Virus/Zarch. Saying that thought there is Virus 2000, but unfortunately the copy protection on the disk makes it unusable these days.

Infestation is another game from David that had similar issues. Perhaps Frontier could do a deal with GOG for these two to get them out there again without their DRM? Also, here is a thought regarding Infestation, imagine for a moment doing something like this in the planetary landing expansion for ED

Yes there has been a few re-makes of Virus including another one on the Miggy called Hyperion. They are all hard as nails though and need plenty of practice to get the best out of them.
The original was hard as nails. It took me and my mate weeks to learn to pilot properly. We eventually got so good we could play on beyond the limits of the game. The Blitz version I linked is very faithful to the original and I have lost all my old skillz.

Ah, I have great memories of Virus! It took a while to learn to fly properly, but it was great fun when you got the hang of it. I must try that remake this weekend and I hope that DB makes an official remake someday as well. :)

I would love to see the original Star Wars Supremacy (Rebellion in the USA) back, in the original format, but brought up to date with better graphics etc. LucasArts tried to do a remake in the terrible game that was Star Wars: Empire at War. But they made it too much like command and conquer.

I spent countless hours on that game. :)
