News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Due to the probability of a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) I doubt if there will be any clarification. However, if you take a good look at the first post on this thread, it would appear that if you do create a Steam Key it links your FD account to that key. Then, whenever you buy anything directly from the FD Store Steam will get a share of this. This post seems to explain it well;

Personally I will not create a Steam Key, as I want FD to benefit in full from any purchases I make of them. Speaking of which (and not to de-rail this thread), is there any information on when there will be paint jobs for the Anaconda? I will (if I like them) buy some (and even if I don't like them I probably will buy some, to help FD further).

Sorry, should've been clear on this one too! This doesn't apply to physical merchandise. Valve don't touch on that, only in-game content.

Thank you Edward. This was my primary concern, and yes, you didn't specifically cover it so information I thought was accurate ended up being false. Guess I have to go fix my post I made based on my interpretation.

Thanks for the update!

Ill just mention, this patch update i was getting between 20-30meg download from FD's servers (not Steam). My cap is 30Meg, so it was bouncing around my cap for the whole download. Presumably FD have done something recently to the servers. But if its consistent, then converting to a Steam key for faster downloads is not a reason anymore (assuming it holds true for others as well).

Steam Key Usage

Okay, so I got the steam key since I was a backer of the game. I notice that the key is access to a 5 gb file. Am I redownloading the game??? If I am, does this mean I should delete the OTHER elite dangerous once the steam one is finished? I thought this key was access to a launcher and the files and assets would be taken from the website launcher version?

At first I thought, it will be nice to have ED in my steam account. But if it will affect any future purchases, I think it is not important anymore to me. More important is to support FD as much as it is possible for creating so beautiful game!

i bet you could copy over your files and it would not have to dl them again, the steam lib is where it wants to live now thats all. move your files to the new dir and it will re install. i would copy the files over then uninstall oldversion then install steam version. imo

I have completely uninstalled all stuff in the launcher, then the launcher itself via windows and then manually deleted all leftover files. (But backed up my complex key binding. ;) )
Then i downloaded all new via steam. It seems that Steam also installed the combat demo as it is bigger then the normal game before.
Then inside the launcher i downloaded the Beta also.

Only copying might not work, because i think it has an other folder name of D1010 instead of 1002 or something like before.
But the download over steam worked flawless with constant speed (0,69 MB/s YAY!!! Need a better connection sometime soon...).
In the past i often had seen the game launcher taking breaks and do nothing as it should download. But maybe this was only on the update or release days.
But over steam all worked great.

Glad that people can have their perceived advantages by integrating ED with their Steam accounts.

I will continue playing the game (and paying for it) independently of any service.

There's almost always a "unlink your Steam account" button with everything i've ever linked with Steam??? Anyone seen it???

When you find the button (-ahem!) surely you just temporarily unlink your steam account, buy the Zaonce Store goodies, then go through linking up with a Steam account again???

It wouldn't be the first time i've done this one for an in-house discount on dlc not available on Steam...

Would have been an idea to inform us of the Valve cut on the page presenting the option of a key.
Can we unlink them as noted?

Hi
Now I know I should be OK with my steam key. I already bought all the dlc and am not one for paying for skins. Anything I buy will be for meat space which valve do not take a cut of, so do I just uninstall elite, add my key and download through steam? Will my custom binds file stay intact?

I am away again from Thursday so tempted to uninstall 1.2 before I leave and then just D/L 1.3 through steam when I get back

Your custom binds should remain in tact as the same folder is used in both installs. I recommend doing the following to minimize your download on Steam:

You can copy the files and Steam will validate and use them whilst installing.

Default installation location of main game files folder on non-Steam Version:

Code:
%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1000
(The number 1000 at the end of this path may be different depending on when you purchased)

  • FORC-FDEV-D-1010 - Elite: Dangerous
  • FORC-FDEV-D-1008 - Elite: Dangerous - Gamma
  • FORC-FDEV-D-1003 - Elite: Dangerous - Mercenary Edition
  • FORC-FDEV-D-1002 - Elite: Dangerous - Beta
  • FORC-FDEV-D-1001 - Elite: Dangerous - Premium Beta
  • FORC-FDEV-D-1000 - Elite: Dangerous - Alpha

The default Steam installation location should be:
Code:
[whatever root you've defined]\SteamApps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010

So essentially copy the main game files directory to [whatever root you've defined]\SteamApps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products and if necessary rename it FORC-FDEV-D-1010 and you should be good to go.

NOTE: If you have the COMBAT_TUTORIAL_DEMO and PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER folders copy them to [whatever root you've defined]\SteamApps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products too.

(COMBAT_TUTORIAL_DEMO is part of the Steam distribution so if you don't have it you'll still need to download ~1.5GB).

Will our generated steam key be representative of account - ie premium Beta, founder etc etc?

Will steam offer the same options - beta's etc etc?

Will these still be able to be accessed alongside Steam if not?

Thanks for the Keys. Very wise to keep happy those who wanted the keys. I am sticking with what I have. I don't want Steam getting funds that FD deserves and I dont want Steam running in the background while I play.

I made the same decision. I want my money to go to FD not steam
