News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

That is the biggest misconception on the face of planet. The customer is not always right, that is just an excuse for people to be whiney little cry babies to get what they want.

FD probably did not know that was going to sell the game on steam, but even then, it does not justify the way people have behaved and crying like babies.

I have not read or heard a single convincing argument to justify why people should be given a free steam key.

I think it is sad and pathetic.

We have the option of using our free steam key or not, that is fine. I for one appreciate the option at least... even though I chose not to (yet) and I do not begrudge anyone from using their key.... I would hope FD do not either (even though i imagine they would love us not to!)

I fully agree with you that the customer is not always right however. in my younger years of building and selling PCs I had some old bag of a woman demand a full refund on a pc i sold her - ages after selling, because when she measured the size of her CRT monitor it was less than the 15 inches that I put in the add, and also she didnt like the fact that her IBM PC was not built by IBM.

I explained how monitors were sized, gave her the spec sheet as well as the phone number of the technical support of company who made the monitor. I also explained that IBM was the company who made the processor, much like an intel 386 pc is not necessarily built by intel (looking back though, my god those IBM/Cyrix chips were so rubbish!).

she called me a liar, a conman and other things not repeatable here..... before getting the tax man & trades descriptions onto me for illegal selling. She most certainly was not right! and lucky I was covered (on both counts though the tax thing was a bit sticky for a bit) ;)

sorry i digress, but in short, I bloody hate customers and am glad I am no longer in sales.... even if it was only operating from my bedroom PC sales.

back on topic
I wonder if it would be possible, both technically and legally (they do not want to annoy valve!) to give everyone a skin pack for free for all accounts NOT associated with steam, and they get removed as soon as the account gets linked.

Because anything you buy in the future, steam will take 30%-40% of it of the money for themselves, regardless of which store you got it from, IIRC. So steam will be taking a lot of well needed finances away from an independent company that needs to pay staff, pay bills and invest to continue developing this game.

If 100,000 people use their steam key and all future expansions cost £20, surface landing and walking around (not including skins and everything else from the store), that is potentially £1,200,000 that FD development have lost, that could have been used to make this game even better

I've worried about that too but eventually came to an inner arbitration that will probably solve this particular problem (atleast for the very conscience of mine).
I'm about to link my ED-Account to steam to supply my personal want, but everytime a major expension etc. comes out, I will sent a specific envelope to Cambridge.
It's content will unlikely be big enough to pay someones bills, but will certainly make up for the loss due to my decision plus a titbit for the tea kitty.

To Steam key or not to Steam key...

Greetings CMDRs (and maybe people from Frontier if we're lucky),

I bought the game before FD started releasing Steam keys and I have not yet redeemed mine because I don't know what the best course of action is.

I'm perfectly happy with having ED apart from my Steam library if there are benefits to FD in doing so - I've seen people saying that if you go the Steam route, all future paid expansions / paint jobs etc. will be bought through the Steam workshop where Steam will take their cut (for doing nothing as far as I can tell - don't FD host everything?) but one of my friends says he got his steam key and still buys stuff directly from FD. Can anyone clarify what exactly the pros and cons are in redeeming a Steam key, apart from having the game in your library? Seems a bit pointless using the Steam launcher to launch the ED launcher to launch the game! :p But then again, having your games all in one place is quite handy.

What is the general consensus around here?

If you generate and link a steam key for a pre-steam (i.e. FD direct) copy of ED, steam will take a cut of any future sales linked to that ED account, even if bought via FD.
:

If you want to use the steam key then fine, just be aware that doing do will reduce FD's future revenue potential.

Well apparently I can't work it as typing "Steam" seemed to show hundreds of threads without any mention of the word. I'm sorry my incompetence has offended you :)

That's all I needed to know. I'm perfectly happy with the current setup so Steam can keep their grubby mits off my ED expenses :)

No steam key here. I like Steam and I think it's great, but I like FD more and they deserve my money.

Agreed. I bought it in the Beta and will not be converting ED to Steam based key. I rather support them directly and entirely, without a margin of profits going to anyone else.

Search also searches the content of the threads as well - so the thread title may not say steam but you have to delve deeper and then refine the search by searching just within that thread.

I agree that the steam positives/negatives it not easy to find straight away. When people repeat the same threads I try to find the original thread and post it in the new thread, although this time it does not seem to be that simple to find :)

But in general Beelbeebub's reply has it in a nutshell.

It's definitely your decision. You don't have to be nice with FD or something. You've bought the game (pretty bugged until now), you have the choice to do whatever you want with this.
IMO I've already helped FD by buying the game. If I want it on Steam I don't care if they are not happy with that. I'm not happy with (old) bugs and I have to deal with it. I've never even seen an apologize for this catastrophic release.

They are aware since months of many bugs like assassination missions or wings problems and that's it. Just aware. Or sometimes a dev says "it's on top of the list"... months later you're still waiting a fix.

I have to add that they aren't going to repay you if you don't like the game, even if you just can't play because of bugs. So do what YOU want.

Thank you muchly. I was sure there would be discussions about this but could not spot them. Good info in this thread though, just what I wanted

Watch out toys, you might get thrown out of the pram...

I am sorry, but FD have dealt with bugs and problems a lot better a far more effectively than many other development companies. They have not even finished making game yet and many more years of development are still to come.

IMO, you are just being impatient and in your post completely highlights everything that is wrong with the modern world. Whiny, spoilt children who only care about themselves... Pathetic.

You are joking right ? So we have paid a beta game... nice FD is now robbing everyone.

This game is so bugged, it's not decent to sell it as a finished/playable game. I am not impatient. Just I am not a beta tester.

At the Frontierstore.net website, I have an option of "UNLINK FROM STEAM".

My question is then:

1. After unlinking, Steam (Valve) no longer gets 30% of any future purchases I make from FD store, correct?
2. After unlinking, ED still exists on Valve's list as "still belong to this person's library", correct?
3. After unlinking, future ED patches (1.4, 1.5, etc etc) is still pushed by Steam if (2) is true, correct?

If the answer is yes to all my questions above, then what does it matter if players take the key, activate it on Steam, then unlink from their account via FD website?

How do I unlink the account? I can't even play via steam!! Always asks for validation sent to my email that I never received.
