Well now you are thoroughly confusing me.

Which part of this:

Or this:

Is you not claiming that PvP was encouraged?

- - - Updated - - -

Open players get merits for killing NPCs - Solo players get credits for killing NPCs.
Open players do not get merits for killing players - Solo players do not get merits for killing players.

Which part of that isn't being equal? What is being taken from either mode?

You are still allowed to kill other players in Open, no-one has taken that away. In fact they added a means to do it with impunity under certain circumstances. They don't reward you for killing players, but they never did.

Nothing is being taken away but you are being given an opportunity for consequence-free PvP.

Ah, see in both the things you're quoting from me you assume 'PVP is being encouraged' to be 'PVP is being encouraged over Solo Play'. All I mean is that it's giving a reason for people to do PVP. This does not mean I think PVP is better than Solo. It does NOT mean I think the game is forcing you to engage in PVP. Your interpretation seems very very very limited. Both in your interpretation of what I say and in your interpretation of the quote 'We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP against supporters of other factions'.

And in regards to your 'all being equal'.

Player kills Player. No reward.
Player kills NPC. Reward.

This means that PVE is actually being encouraged by the gameplay mechanics as opposed to '"We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP against supporters of other factions'....

[oddly not 8 char!]

Quotes don't count.

"We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP against supporters of other factions,"

That bit's about PvP.

"and a chance to feel like part of a team even if you prefer to play alone"

AND is a conjunction used to join clauses. The first part of the sentence was about PvP in Power Play, the second part is about feeling as part of a team in Power Play (not about PvP). Split it into two separate sentences.

We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP against supporters of other factions.
We're giving players a chance to feel like part of a team even if you prefer to play alone.

That's how I took the quote from Sandro.

Telepathy would be so much simpler you know :D

If you are correct in your interpretation of said quote then I sit corrected :)

Is it any wonder then why FD have such a hard time when announcing things when it's so easy to misunderstand simple sentences

(Thanks also for the 8char puzzle - never knew that re quoting)

How do you see Power Play as being competitive? Which part of that relies on being rewarded for killing other players?

Do I need to link you to the thread with the PDF of how to play Power Play? It's the biggest Competitive element to make your chosen faction go up the ladder and expand. You are working against players who are trying to undermine a system you're trying to fortify, You are fortifying a system to prevent it from being undermined, Players are preparing systems like Cartoi and meeting equal resistance to claim the system for expansion. Players are helping prevent expansions from happening or helping expand their powers into new territory, regardless of opposition.

Each Power has ways to undermine, but it's so shoddy and weakly implemented, it's a horrific grind of "Shoot NPCs" or "Turn x in y" and doesn't allow for really diverse ways of play that could be unique or better in other modes.

That part definitely warrants shooting and more rewards, especially when there are commanders going after traders and attempting to prevent certain actions from happening. It's why I believe Power Play should be exclusive to Open Play or really better balanced. Especially when there isn't much diversity and a huge differences to play in a private/solo mode, compared to Open Play.

It warrants these questions: Why is this even in the game? Or better yet, Why isn't this still in beta? Why kill off some incredible characters with such a shoddy, poorly implemented system?

Yes I misunderstood your emphasis on PvP being encouraged to mean that PvP and non-PvP was being encouraged.

Neither choice is being encouraged or discouraged because NPCs appear in all modes. All are equal in terms of reward.

and still u fail to understand something open play isnt something special u like it or not ....and pp isnt competition atleast not direct between players...

We're giving players a chance to feel like part of a team even if you prefer to play alone.

I really don't see the argument here.
'We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP'. ie. A reason to do something is encouragement. 'I can't do it!' 'Do it for me son!' 'Okay Dad'.
'We're giving players a chance to feel like part of a team even if you prefer to play alone.' Solo players will have stuff to do too. (In fact solo players have the advantage in PP).

See you think there's conflict where I see none. My only beef is that there's no reward for PVP contrary to what's implied. I have no problem with people playing solo.

Again. I have a long history of arguing against griefing and abusive PvP. I prefer PvP to be contextualised and so far in game that's been limited to bounty hunting and piracy. This seemed to imply there'd be a reason to engage in PVP whereas infact there's little to none. Far easier to just engage NPCs. The only real reward for PVP is lack of bounty on your own turf, no reward for taking the riskier course and going on the offensive.

Settle down Instigator.

Problem with Power Play, is that it's unfair and poorly balanced on the three modes. It's practically better to take advantage of solo or in a group. Why bother interacting with other players in a very competitive mode?

We require additional Pylons.

Don't you think its strange that if I engage an NPC working for one faction I gain a reward, but if I engage a PC working for that faction there's no reward?

I don't see any reason why PP can't both
a) allow conflict via strategic movement of pieces, players, items as it already does.
b) allow players who've both decided to engage PP by selecting a power to suffer the same consequences an NPC does.

u only know to insult ppl anyway...
and pp's problems is its rewards .....the balance is fine if u want competition u can go to cod then ;)

We are not communicating effectively here as he is talking about PP (the patch) introducing reasons to engage in PvP - either fighting others by yourself (alone) or in a wing ;)

"We're giving players a reason to engage in PVP against supporters of other factions, and a chance to feel like part of a team even if you prefer to play alone," Sammarco added.

They want you to PvP ... but they don't reward you for it (claim others - I have not met another player in a while to know for sure)

I think only Sandro knows for sure what he meant, whatever way he meant it it doesn't rebutt my basic argument.

I've read it thanks. The competition part is as follows:

The following elements are used to determine galactic standing:

  • Number of controlled and exploited systems (more is better)
  • Number of successful preparations and expansions (more is better)
  • Number of systems in turmoil (fewer is better)
  • Number of systems revolted (fewer is better)
Which of those are affected by not shooting other players? Correction, by not being rewarded for shooting other players. You are still allowed to shoot them.

No, because I can see the game from a POV of FDev not wanting to encourage PvP. They can allow for it, even take away the penalties in certain circumstances, but they shouldn't reward it. Stopping players can provide indirect rewards (e.g. it could stop an undermine attempt from succeeding) but it should not have direct rewards.

Yes, I agree it's a gamey solution that doesn't fit the setting, but nor does most of Power Play. It's a board game bolted onto a simulation. What makes sense about CCs and delivering a set amount of leaflets in a limited period of time? What makes sense about fortify and undermine and weekly turns? Power Play is a total mess as far I'm concerned.

But I don't find it strange that killing other players isn't rewarded. Missions never did. If I'm asked to kill pirates or traders or whatever, only NPCs count. It is entirely in keeping with everything we've seen so far.

Funny enough, I'd assumed PCs counted for the kills/ merits same as NPCs. So it was a tad odd to see they don't.
Not sure why they don't, it's not as if that would change anything for PvE private Groups or Solo players.
That being said, look at the fuss being made over a simple misunderstanding over intended meaning leaning towards that ;)

But at least there is a reason to kill everything that moves now, as long as they come from another power of course ;)

Indeed. Glad we're all on the same page at last. Now we can have the REAL argument.

Actually, the grammar makes it quite clear whenever anyone reads it correctly.
There is a comma separating parts of the sentence, easy to overlook but it is there ;)
