DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

Lovverly PCBs arrived today... WooHoo!

Thanks chaps. :)

PS: If you don't mind a week or so delay, cheap Pro Micro boards can be found here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Leonardo-Pro-Micro-ATmega32U4-Arduino-IDE-1-0-3-Bootloader-replace-Pro-Mini-/310634777706 £4.60 delivered.

Here's a very cheap 6050 module from the same people:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6DOF-MPU-6050-Module-3-Axis-Gyroscope-Accelerometer-Module-Arduino-MPU-6050-/201002005334? £1.66 delivered.

They also sell both of those in multiples, at greater discounts (!).

They've got a gazillion other things in their store, but actually sell on eBay.com, so if you get a problem with the '.co.uk' address, use this one:

So followed guide but having issues trying to calibrate anyway thought id try Ed tracker. Everytime I load UI it creates a text file hss_errpid(random number)

I have latest JAVA installed. Ok listen guys really appreciate all help, I have 2 head trackers assembled and I have tried following guides to upload etc but gotta be honest think im in over my head having never done this before SO.......having to admit defeat and these will sit unloved and unused until such time as you are able (if possible) to create a .exe you click and it installs correct software and calibrates itself and in future is just "plug and play"

Kinda sad

Thanks again Pazmeister over and out!

SO after a failed attempt last night, my son decided to have a look at what Iwas playing with and by accident broke the usb off, luckily my new daughterboard arrived a few days back and another headtracker arrived from hobby components, so to I solder the thing into the board switch and all, so far looking good, the axis seems to be working ok, only gripe is the spirit level dot is not in the middle, is it essential for it to be in the middle?

Also I have been trying to mount this thing on my headset, tried a few boxes and I think I have found a decent one big enough for the usb plug which goes into the micro, a 9V battery box with a little modifcation can house this headtracker with daughterboard, gonna have to order 1 from maplin as my backward little town I reside doesn't even know what one is.

That's a bug :) The calibration sketch doesn't write the new adjustments back to the chip. I also found a bug in the Invensense example code that results in the calibration not being as good as it should (ahem... or making it worse  )

So nothing to worry about, just go ahead and get it level by eye and do the yaw drift bit. In-game drift might not be as good as it could be but fixed calibration sketch should help. Will post here when it's in the wild.

Brumster is setting up a new EDTracker site where we can have a forum dedicated to this. We don't want to spam the ED forums without our little project and it will make it easier to help peeps out and, crucially, help folks keep track on just what the he11 is going on :)

Don't feel too bad Paz I'm sure there are many more in this position, mine sits gathering dust until there's a Dummies guide for non-techy types to getting it up and running.

Wishing I'd just stumped up the extra few quid for a finished and programmed version but thought it'd be a 'fun exercise' to build it myself - boy did I get that wrong :D

ah ok great thanks rob, please post a link to the forum when it is setup so I can register there.

Its all a learning curve paz I have 0 experience in porgramming, while it can be frustrating it can be very rewarding even if you get a partial success, I have been playing with my one but only found out yesterday that I mounted it vertically and I should of mounted it horizintally, only to find out that my son snaps off the usb and it doesn't work anymore.

walk away from it go watch a film have a beer get drunk whatever and then after a few days you may feel you want to have another go :)

One click 'install and go' will happen, just depends on when Alpha 4 turns up and how often it Crash To Desktop on me :p

SO after a failed attempt last night, my son decided to have a look at what Iwas playing with and by accident broke the usb off...

*snip*

I suspect we'll see quite a few USB sockets damaged. The mounting doesn't appear to be particularly robust. I've covered my socket in plastic using a hot glue gun and I intend to leave the lead plugged in permanently to avoid this kind of damage.

I don't use a headset because I'm a miserable uncommunicative old git. I've ordered a military style cap in black with zipped pockets on the sides. I'm planning to sew the assembly into the right-hand pocket, ensuring that the zip can't short anything out and that the cable is adequately strain-relieved. I might even treat myself to ab E: D badge on the front...

Personally I use a wireless headset so I'd love to connect it to a battery pack of some kind like a tiny lithium ion or something. I was also going to consider mounting it with velcro so I can take it off when I'm not using it.

ok did a bit of testing with this to see how it worked, tried it with

warthunder, works flawlessly amazing more accurate than facetracker using pointtracker and a 3p cap.

Euro Truck Sim, had this working on my old one all be it only the x axis but it was responsive, this on the other hand was slow to turn, had to wait for it to scroll back.

DCS works flawlessly very accurate fast too

IL2 didn't work at all, managed to get it to move a few pixels here and there, I suspect the age of the game being at fault.

So overall impressed with this only drawback I have to have the EDtracker UI running otherwise the computer says no and nothing works.

Excellent! Thanks for posting the list.

The fact it's only working with the UI running gives me a lead to follow...

Could you try running the UI, ensure it's monitoring the tracker then hit 1 to turn monitoring off and Q to quit the UI. Does that make a difference ?

ok done that tested it with warthunder turned off monitoring and pressed q and it still works and just as accurate and responsive :)

I also did a pc restart and in warthunder it worked perfect

I think you should stick with it.
It's going to be much easier with a dedicated site.
Step by step clear instructions on setting up the Arduino IDE , drivers and copying over certain files et cetera.
All in one place.
Rather than trying to find the truth in a really big unwieldy thread.

That reminds me I should probably go and change my password on the .org.
Cheers Brumster for setting that up.
Also, nice logo.
Very subtle.

We likes subtle.
:)

Has Alpha 4 dropped yet?

So I got the tracker unit in a 9v battery box look pretty cool, question the switch that is already on the board do you think I could solder 2 wires to the feet of that so I could stick the button switch on the side of the box, dont wanna desoloder if I can help it
