The problem I had was that I was so used to the 2.0 AI i was flippant with regards to my wanted status, choice of ship and loadout and where I chose to fly and what I was carrying. The way the AI flies is a huge improvement, but the changes go beyond that, the response of security is better, the attraction of bounty hunters to wanted players, actions of pirates, and many other aspects have all improved. It is not so much that I have had to improve my flying, it is that I have had to improve the way I play the game. Res sites and conflict zones are playable if you go in the right ship, indeed it is a joy to watch the AI ships slugging it out with each other whilst I sit there recharging my shields. If you get interdicted in a cutter full of high value cargo whilst passing a through an anarchy the the elite FDL pirate that interdicts you will have a field day, and unless you choose to submit quickly and boost you've had it. If you are wanted you'd better be in a good combat ship or a fast ship.
The problem I found was that the changes were too much at once, from my point of view it would have been better to phase in the changes over a number of updates. I consider myself a casual player, maybe not in terms of hours played, but in that I want to fly the ship, not have to study which route to take from a to b, or grind to get a fleet of A rated ships, and although I love the game I seriously considered calling it a day, in fact, were it not for the fact I have just got into BGS work for a player group I probably would have.
What will fix the issues?
1. I'd like to see another option for planning routes, as well as fastest and economical there needs to be a 'safest' option or two which avoids low security systems, or just sticks to high security or at least gives some kind of warning if there is a low security system on the route.
2. The transaction panel on the target panel needs fixing, this has been my biggest cause of trouble in the early days of the upgrade. Before it didn't matter that much if I was wanted in a system, now it does, I need to know and can't be relying on memory. Might also be useful to have dormant bounty notifications when entering a system, or a warning when engaging the FSD to jump to a system where there is an outstanding bounty.
3. The rewards for pretty much every action in the game need to rise to reflect the increased difficulty. I've never been much of a grinder, but the level was probably just about right before, but there are increased costs involved now due to the increased risk and the rewards need to reflect that.
4. I'm not even going to get into powerplay, suffice to say it definitely needs fixing now.
There are probably many other ways to counter the changes to the AI which might help, but I can only speak as to my own style of game play.
I don't see the issue as being 'is the AI to good?' as much as the problems caused by the unintended consequences of the AI being better. (maybe not unintended, but definitely consequences.) I don't think nerfing the AI is the solution, because frankly I see it as a bit of a programming masterpiece, but it has undoubtedly cause problems for some if not most players and some ways to counter it is going to be necessary.
PS for anyone who finds the AI too easy, man up and take a trade cutter full of gold into an anarchy a few times and 'enjoy' the elite FDLs.
