He was responding to garlic who was saying that Star Citizen (or more directly, SQ42) is the spiritual successor. His claim was a contrast. I'm not going to bother engaging you in an argument, which from memory you were claiming this place didn't support, if you're going to display incomprehension of the subject matter or an otherwise disingenuous, deeply cynical approach to discussions of this kind.
Also consider that Ben Lesnick, a prominent figure in CIG, made a very similar statement about COD:IW. It's hardly irrelevant.

JCR's claim was a mock. Spiritual successors generally share the same creators, which makes SC a quite obvious spiritual successor to Wing Commander. JCR said "not anymore" inferring that COD has somehow stolen away the spiritual successor part from star citizen. Ridiculous and off topic. Talking about Star Citizen being the spiritual successor is on topic because ya know, it's talking about STAR CITIZEN. Talking about COD is off topic because ya know, it's not talking about Star Citizen.

nah, they didn't steal anything. They just seem to be doing Squadron 42 on time, years before Squadron 42 and in much better fidelity. Just compare the sequences on the flight decks. There's no comparison. CIG was beaten to the punch by both the hated big publishers AND the indies... and COD:IW is going to sell many million more copies than everything CR has made put together.
I'm just waiting for the hilarious week when EA announces the true spiritual successor to Wing Commander... called Wing Commander.

What would REALLY make me laugh if it was just a pay2win mobile game where you buy ships and it clears 500 million the first year.

COD:IW will beat Squadron 42 to the punch doing the same thing Wing Commander did: Top Gun in space. At least they ditched the silly Larry Niven ripoff kitties.

.....and this is why real discussions here don't happen. You simply ignore common sense. Spiritual successors almost always involve the same creators from that which they are succeeding. The fact that they don't own the rights to the original IP anymore is the entire reason why they are actually spiritual successors.

Where are you getting "almost always" from? You're seemingly just insisting on a very specific definition of a quite LOOSE term because you're defensive about COD:IW doing everything Squadron 42 does. There there, it'll be ok. At least CIG will remain number one for the foreseeable future on concept ship sales. That's one accomplishment, anyway! Sure, usually spiritual successors are from the same creators. In this case, it isn't. In many other cases it won't be either. And so the cycle continues as game developers riff on each others' work, much like CR riffed on Battlehawks 1942. I guess that wasn't so much spiritual succession as reverse-engineering, as he claimed...
Where do you carry out this "real discussion" you're talking about? I'd love some links to where you have these real discussions and any particularly good ones you had about Star Citizen. I'd love to compare them to this not-real discussion we're all having here which is one of the most amusing, informative, and infuriating threads I'm following. If you can do better, lead the way!
