I don't have much gaming time and have played ED less and less since premium beta -
I'm hoping news which will attract me back to the game .. Or to be more likely, at least something new to read on the forums :-D

The Engineers update was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I still have faith in the game and still love playing it. Let's hope FD have something cool to show in Gamescon...

Its competition in that it's a space sim and has many of features requested on here since ED's launch. Up until now if you wanted a space sim ED or SC were the only contenders, now there is a third and as time goes on there will be more, further diluting FD's income and player base.

People have limited funds, monies that could have gone towards Season Two and later will likely go to Hello Games at least in the short term. The more casual game player with limited time may find it ticks all the boxes compared to ED and will never come back. I really hope FD have something special to pull out of the hat at Gamescom besides space tourism, else it could be the beginning of the end of what could have been a great game.

Its certainly not a sim. I am a casual player but would prefer ED over NMS anyday from what I have seen.

I agree that SOME people will buy NMS and not elite, but it is a 2 way street.

NMS may interest people in the space genre, they may get into it, and then after getting their feet wet decide they want to check out a space game set in an actual attempt at a proper simulated milky way, ....

will the gains compensate for or even be greater than the losses? I have no idea, but either way, I would guess for the most part many will just buy both.

I own Assetto corsa, PCARs, dirt rally, sonic racing, burnout, need for speed .......... etc etc etc

further more i own several cods and several battlefields. I reckon most people are happy to have more than one game in a genre.

Only FD will know how their sales are affected and how many they need to keep ED viable

No quite true. There's Evochron Legacy and Rogue System as well but NMS and SC are certainly the big ones. You are correct though, with only X amount of time to set aside for games, NMS will take a large portion of the Elite player base away. It has everything ED said it would have and it's one price.

As for hype - what has there been to hype over in ED. I would say planetary landings and that's it. We've had Wings, CQC, PowerPlay and Engineers all of which have been a massive bore or a pita and doesn't work (wings). It's an odd way to make a game, put stuff in that's massively grindy that nobody asked for and don't put in the stuff people are asking for (better crime system/better exploration/better AI and more sense AI/Persistency/missions that work and are deeper and more involving/MUCH MORE INTERACTION WITH OUR SPAESHIPS IN A SPACESHIP GAME!)

Considering most HOTAS's are configurable at the assigned key level, I'm not sure how that's possible?

yeah I already replied to that with no response lol...

I can easily hook up my hotas if its not supported in any game by using x360ce......its how I got a gamepad and steering wheel and my hotas all working at the same time in GTA V

No *dedicated* HOTAS support. It's flying is very very basic.

NMS is single player, ED Is MP MMO. NMS has fantasy galaxies with small , ED has Milky Way galaxy simulated to 1:1 scale. NMS what I have seen so far has no gas giants, black holes, ring systems, etc. etc. etc.

I can go on but you will get idea.

indeed... whilst NMS without doubt has some stuff i would give my left nut to see in ED i actually do not see it replacing ED for most people as it seems to scratch a mostly different itch. ( As for the things i would like FD to take, I am not talking atmospheric stuff as am confident that will come one day), in fact the thing NMS has which FD would do well to figure out how to get into ED imo are caves and overhangs, and indeed from what i have read personally, no one has even really noted that that is a feature of NMS over ED.

I know you could argue that overhangs are usually created by atmospheric conditions and so may be rare on what we have access to right now, but surly they must be posible, even if it is outcrops cause by different material densities of the surface and collision with an asteroid? (I am out of my comfort zone here so may be talking crap ;) )

I think latest FD response was that they would like to do caves and overhangs and they see "posibility" to add such feature. It is quite possible they already got tech working for this for next Season 3. We will see.

I don't know what you mean by "no dedicated support" - do you own a HOTAS?

I couldn't care less if ED has things in space you can't interact with - what's your point? That it has more stuff in it you can only look at? You mentioned MP

The game is a progressively expanding universe and the chances of meeting another player, another actual human player, in something like less than 1%. That is pretty intense! But DM21 Gaming came out with a video explaining just how multiplayer might happen.

In their words, say you are escorting your faction's starships and an enemy fleet warps in, then you go ahead and defend your ships, much like how you have done many many times before. But then, there is this tiny fraction of a chance that you will encounter another ship that simply does not move like an npc.

The enemy could be doing evasive maneuvers like you have never seen before—or do yourself. You try to fend off the unexpected attack but out of nowhere, the enemy spins to your rear side and blasts you to your latest death on No Man's Sky.

This is the only way a multiplayer type of game can happen, and it is, again, a very slim chance. What is the reason for this? Sean Murray founder and creator of No Man's Sky, had this to say, “If you want a first-person shooter-sci-fi-around-on-a-planet game play Destiny. It's a really good game. Go play that. We're not trying to do that.”

Murray added, “What we want is for the player to play with a sense of that other people have been there before. So what will reasonably happen is going to a planet and discovering that someone else has been there before you. You will see traces of them, like creatures they've named and things they left behind.”

ED is SP for all those that play solomode (which I think is quite a lot of people).

It seems to me you're talking about things you know nothing about like you know what they're about lol

You have two choices. Either you go the easy (think FDev) way and work with trivial height map + small ever repeating textures and not bother even with larger clutter (randomly placed rock assets).

Or you go the hard way and do whatever nms did. It is not perfect, but still looks great.

Are you hyped for what they will unveil at Gamescom on August 17 and 18?

Very much so. I really hope they will show us some cool new stuff.
We have seen far too few glimpses of the future of ED lately.
I wish they would once in a while show us some nice concept art again.

I also would like to hear some talks by Braben, or the art director again. I think those were very inspiring.
That video about the technical details of planet surface generation I enjoyed immensely.
They could show us a bit more like that.

yeah, I'm totally hyped. Saying that, Gamescom is make or break for Elite as far as me playing it goes. Either they announce something amazing (and soon) or I'm off. I'm the most patient person in the world (universe), but the mick has most definitely been taken

I feel the same....they got to announce something from next season...we all know about multicrew and ship launched fighters and of course our own "meth head" avatars.....I just want to know when walking around our ships ect is going to be a thing..

for me its the biggest thing they can announce...theres a hell of a lot of us who think this way...its time FD....ITS SHOWTIME!

I chose Neutral.

Honestly i'm more interested to see what kind of half baked blunder Fdev is going to try to integrate into this floundering game this time, and how it will break the game even further. I'd much rather fdev go back and fix the earlier installments to the game, but you know thats not going to happen.

It's morbid curiosity really, you know it's going to be awful but you can't help but watch.

You know what would go a loooong way Frontier?

Planets with atmosphere. Perhaps not with dense vegetation and/or dense population yet, but some basic plant life, oceans, volcanic activity, that sorta thing. Would go a long way towards keeping the progress train moving.

Clearly your idea of patience and mine are vastly different, what do you consider 'amazing' in regards to an announcement?
