Gamescom 2016: am I the only one disappointed?

IMO SC will never be ready for release. What they show is tailor-made and specific - they have no hope of maintaining that glossyness into release. I believe the whole thing to be a con - nothing more than a way for CR to make a living. If it ever gets released it will be like NMS - bearing no resemblance to the marketing. You can dis ED and FD all you like but guess what? They are the ones who actually made it happen, and it is improving by leaps and bounds - perhaps not to your personal schedule, but improving rapidly nonetheless. Right-O trolls - have at me. En garde!

This really gets old and sounds like a broken record. It's always convenient to try and use the argument that SC is not out yet. Of course it's not out yet. Please tell me even a triple A company that could have put this game out yet. You can't create a new Skyrim or GTA game in this time frame. It's just a fact that ED didn't have a choice but to release. They did not get the backing that SC got or continues to get. ED must slowly develop through expansion sales and bobble heads! That's fine. Just different. Be happy they did, or we would have nothing to play right now. But the excuse that SC is " not out yet" is just lame.
We should all be happy that some companies are willing to push new boundaries. It will benefit us all in the end.

Gamescom 2016 was the most disappointing thing since my son.

No, David's job is selling the game. That leaves no time for designing it or even playing it. Fortunately to do his job he needs to know nothing more about the game than e.g. do the artists who create his trailers.

Oh?? NMS in two weeks has outsold ED in two years.

Really. According to steam figures, they haven't out sold Elite (Elite 800,000 NMS 765000) yet. We don't know what the sales of ED are on the Xbox or from Frontier Home page.

ED has ~ 1.8M units in total sold, most of them base game. so NMS is nowhere close in units sold. It will catch up eventually, but it won't be any much further.

Pshh. You and your... facts. These just get in the way.

Elite doesn't even have landing on planets! There, that's how to debate. That's all you need ;)

To be fair it is CIG major issue however - not being able to hit any deadlines. SQ42 seems to be pushed into next year, SC Alpha 3.0 demo should have been shown year ago... They haven't done nothing revolutionary...yet. But with CIG there's lot of talented people which will deliver working game eventually.

I will guess people are just tired of comparisons. People hype SC demo - it was nice, but with caveats. So far big SC critic-troll Derek has been right on money - CIG continues to show "tailored demos", but nothing really much materlise. And that's a major issue with games in production...lot of games haven't gone past alpha stages for very same reasons. Money runs out and you can't deliver the game.

Also nothing what has been said makes FD shouldn't take notice or care. For Christ sakes, they have been following SC development news since inception! However, FD has to work on their own speed and their own delivery path.

I bet we will get news about 3.0 after the release of 2.4.
FD was not talking about 2.0 either when they were about to release 1.2
That simply is FD's modus operandi. Always has been.
I bet if they wanted to they could tell us now what they plan to do for 4.0 and 5.0.
But they will spill the beans when it is time to eat them.

2.0 was shown at gamescom 2015 (as far as I recall it was a trailer) and delivered end of 2015,
what's clear now is that we won't see 3.0 before next year...

as usual the post turned to a SC vs ED vs NMS comparison.....[wacko]

What will we see next year for Elite Dangerous? Frontier didn't show anything about that which disappointed many people.

Hi,
I've seen all the streams and I agree that the 2.2 is a good step ahead, I'm not crazy about the "passenger stuff", but I'll appreciate a lot all other features (carriers, route planner, ship transfer...)
My disappointment is coming somewhere else: at Gamescom 2015 we've seen the Horizon trailer, it was great and now we're playing with this great expansion, but this years there's nothing about 3.0/season 2017
What's next? Walkable stations (IMHO: meh)? Landable worlds (IMHO: great!!!!), but first of all: are the new things at least at alpha stage?
I'm a lifetime owner, so this is also impacting my spent money....

I just wanted to share my POV

bye

Frontier only makes announcements when they think they are ready, and, from a PR/hype standpoint, that's too late.

Everything they announced should have shipped in January 2015. They were too busy with Wings, and Power Play.

I'm disappointed with the reveals but only because I've been ultra hyped by their media team. What was revealed about 2.2 is good for one patch but like you I was hoping for a trailer of season 3 and a show of content for the remainder of the season.

All's not lost though people, I have a feeling much of the work for this patch was in discoverable content which they can't talk about. Felt for the PR guys who had to drag the announcements of for four days to a fanatical fan base. Lol

So what can we guess that's coming our way in Oct... The Missing... Aliens... (Looks like ground based bugs coming from the barnacles if you ask me)... Failed civilisations (Soontill?)... Significant new plantry features... Fighters... Passanger missions... Station variety (including more than they let on, maybe one for UA bombed stations?). More optimisations and graphical updates... and group management functions...

Lots in there, but one headline announcement such as what the next season will be... Though speculation on the forums is space legs... All's good in the world of ED Cmdrs.

Yep, just one blink of Session 3 and the rest of This Session :p

Really. According to steam figures, they haven't out sold Elite (Elite 800,000 NMS 765000) yet.

NMS has sold huge numbers off Steam. On boxed sales in stores it entered the UK chart at #1 and is at #2 as I write. if ED's boxed edition even reached the Top 40, I didn't see it.

Plus consider the picture on £££. All NMS sales have been at AAA price point £40/£45. Lots of ED sales were at the Sale price of £10 and even full price now is only £20.

SC are great at marketing like NMS was...question when we can play SC ? In 2020 ?!

Even 2.2 is not great, but I am quite sure that we will get promised futures in October...
This is so hypocritical, Elite hyped people just as much as SC during the KS phase, then they went radio silent and the development is aimned to have a finished game after 6 to 10 years. SC has the exact same development roadmap, except they are developing the whole game at once instead of by stages so it all fits together easily, plus they are being open about the development.

The problem is with people who know      about making games and think that game design is short and direct and re/doing things because they don-t work is rare and a bad thing, when in reality it happens all the time, most of the time spent in developing is based on re working what you already have

SC dident cost my anything. But what im sayng is that they lie to us. There was no faceblowing. All the things was well known from a half of a year.
This is simply not true. Some folks just aren't happy if they are not complaining.

"the guy on twitter" was Michael Gapper and he was likely referring to the new Neutron star graphical and game mechanic update (jump boost, if you don't get your face blown off and/or ship blown up).

Lots of stuff was shown that FD did not advertise as 2.0 headline features and that was a pleasant surprise to me; Aliens coming with 2.2 (I thought later, like 3.0), new station interiors based on system archetype and status, mystery assets being added for us to find, new harvestable surface features, ship and module storage and transfer, new tectonic features for planets, the neutron star update, shipyards, ship graveyards, new fighter type for Alliance, new NPC crew and revamped station services screen, System map enhancements, Galaxy map routing enhancements, nice QOL updates like the notice of system status before jump, the new hyper-jump animation update to better reflect the lore/FSD function, and I am sure there will be more enhancements in a massive change-log come 2.2 beta.

And please, stop with the SC advertising/ fiction. There is an entire off-topic sub-forum for SC fans to promote that game. SC commercials are divorced from the reality of what they have released. And anyone paying close attention could tell the demo was a special gamescom build run on a LAN with 3 players and half pre-rendered content. That is the type of hype that eventually turns folks against a game/company for over-promising and under-delivering. I would rather FD not do that shady stuff.

I don't know how you made that estimate. I'd be surprised if it is accurate. It would need monthly sales to be about fives times higher that Steam is reporting for the base game.
Just read their publicly disclosed financial statements and you will find this is true (although the last number I saw FD quoting was 1.7 millions IIRC, but that was a while ago). There are penalties for companies to lie in those. And FD sells the game from their own store and only added Steam support months after launch - ex. I did not buy ED on Steam.

I was looking forward to seeing the QOL improvements and graphical upgrades but even with tempered expectations I thought that what was shown was fairly limited. It was definitely rather low-key compared to last year's Horizons reveal.

... I enjoy ED in momental look, in last playing evening I spent hours on planet surface and enjoyed awesome views. It is already 9 months I'm playing and this game is better and better with every released big update. ED presentation on gamescom and one of Sandro gamescom summary comment placed on this forum clearly indicates that in 2.2 will be more (much more? :) ) as was shown, and it fit perfectly into the past where was game updated with many small details (unannounced) which were making play even more enjoyable. Gamescom in my eyes presented that FD want seriously add more content into game and it makes me personally very pleased, I'm eagerly waiting for 2.2 release. I'm not fan of huge promises and drawings of unsure future, so for me was gamescom presentation done very good and had enough balanced hype.

I personally am very excited about 2.2. I think it's shaping up to be a great patch with gameplay changes and overall visual improvements. I also thought 2.1 was a great patch before npc nerfs started rolling out in every minipatch since the release. 2.2 will definitely be a better patch than 2.1 . At least for me it will. I was hoping for some season 3 or at least 2.4 hints/reveals at Gamescom. So that was a little bit dissapointing for me.

I have been reading this Post for a while and, while I usually just lurk and read, I decided to create my first post and add my thoughts to this.

After Horizons dropped last year, I played for a while and then left the game for almost a year. 2 Weeks ago I came back to it. Quite a few things have changed, some really subtle.

On my first approach to a Space station I was greeted by a voice, speaking directly to me "LAKON Juliet Yankee Delta........." This continued during the entire docking process.......and it blew me away with the immersion. subtle change but wow, what an effect! (IMHO)

That is why I am actually looking forward to the next update and the changes it will bring. As far as I can tell many QOL changes are being made, it will flesh out the game and make it greater.

Patience is the key here, honestly I respect and like that the Developers are taking their time, not hyping what is not ready for release, and making sure (well as sure as they can, in software development unfortunately it is always relative) that what they implement is as good as it can be.

Regarding the delays, what many need to realise is that - as far as I can tell - FD needs to maintain 2 codebases, 1 for the base game and 1 for Horizons. That is no easy task as you basically have double the QA (Quality Assurance) to do. Just because something was fixed in the base game does not automatically mean it will work in the Horizons version (and vice versa).

So yeah, actually we are getting alot of tweaking and content, I have no doubt in my mind that there is alot more to come (we all saw the interruptions during the streams - I'd call that teasing ;) ) but better to get it right then "Chuck it out and fix it sometime later" as many, many other developers do.

Sit back, relax, enjoy what you have and are getting, when new stuff is teased and mentioned enjoy the anticipation, getting everything at once would spoil the fun.

On a side note, last night I was halfway through a long haul flight and it was late and I was tired. So I looked around for a suitable rocky world, managed to ace one of the best approaches to a planet I have ever done, set my Asp down and shut off all systems. Then I left the game for some sleep. Immersive? For me it sure as heck is.

Enjoy the journey - not the destination! :)
