The Star Citizen Thread v5

I'll bite. Again.

It was an analysis; was never asserted to be set in stone; and as analysis' go, a lot of unknown factors (e.g. that people would keep giving them money after the fact) can influence the outcome and end result. So anyone parroting it as fact, is a fool.

That's the nature of analysis. It's fluid. It's unpredictable. At best. With what I knew at the time, I gave them 90 days. The 90 days turned out to be wrong, though the evidence that led me to that analysis, wasn't wrong.

No, it's just a complete failed analysis because it was based on wishful thinking (and planted rumours by goons that trolled you and keep doing so) instead of facts.
Not by incompetence or stupidity, but with the calculated scheme of trying to spread FUD into a game project at all costs.

The first thing anyone does to predict the year income of a company/project is look at the data from the prior years/months, which everyone could do, as the funding is publicly available and tracked.

seHsUjx.jpg

Since the start of the campaign, every year, their strongest months was allways October and November, allways. So one had to be very desperate to make those claims before their two strongest months. Glad you did tbh, not only it fuelled more funding but also diminished the little of credibility that you had and also the goons that support(ed) you to boot.
Thanks for the laughs it's all we can say. You and all the other armchair dev's / fortune-tellers. Keep it up. I'm loving this "collapse in 90 days" may they keep on coming for years to and years ;)

Oh and please care to explain why do you think one can have more fun with your Universal Combat game than you can with Elite: Dangerous?

Actually, I think we have Margaret Hamilton and Katherine Johnson to thank for that. ;)

Yeah, but their flight model was really cumbersome and the Apollo missions were SO repetitive.

Do you seriously think any of us care that an infamously cocky space sim developer was cocky about his indie space sim? He's said good things about Frontier and Elite in the past too, but the slightest criticism about ED doesn't trigger a damn jihad like it does with SC. This is SUCH a lousy tactic that really says a lot more about you than DS. Almost EVERY regular poster on this thread has issues with certain aspects of ED, we're not some weird lockstep gang.

Stick to Star Citizen and lay off the FUD. Nobody attacks Star Citizen by ripping apart what YOU do for a dayjob, and you're really not going to get under his skin by making comments about his games. Nor will you make Elite fans froth at the mouth and on your side because at some point some guy said something about the game. So stick to the topic, hmm?

I dont think I got a Word your Saying there.
But if you call it Kicking a Nest when Correcting some Wrong Statements that result from Empty Hatred. Then yes I guess I got talent for this sort of thing.
I dislike just leaving things be you see.

Leaving things alone. Doesnt make em Go Away. In contrary. It often results in it becoming Bigger.

He said PIONEERED not invented, and from your own link "An extreme case was Elite, " so there you have it, in black and white.

Presumably because they'd want to reach as many customers as possible and because Steam is unparalleled in that regard?

They don't need to, they've got more than half-million players and they are still in early alpha stage. Whatever more players they could get from steam would not be worth it by loosing 30% of the pie imo.

I doubt any of us are going to join in your vendetta.

Derek has been polite and civil in here and listened to what others have said. Can't say the same for everyone sadly.

lol vendetta? I made him a question, I didn't rally anyone to ask for a LOD refund.

You'd think with SC being so fun and so much better than every game out there the people who swear by it so faithfully would be spending every free second they had there playing it rather than hours on an unrelated message board trying to convince others that it isn't a borked janky shoddy tech demo.

Instead, well...

Yeah just casual like.

Not using pre-prepared resources from other sites to try and turn people in this thread against him to discredit anything he says. No, no sir. Just an innocent question that popped into your head.

Wifi on plane :)

I don't blame you for misunderstanding, was typing way too fast before the turn phones off on a mobile so apologize for that.

I should have most definitely proofread that.

I disagree with things getting worse though, there can be an intelligent debate...but given nothing is concrete and under much cover nobody will let go of their points.

I think there is valid criticism towards the development of SC given the course of development and the inconsistencies. Part of that is the burden of being crowd funded and "open"...if CR had of come out saying the game would be ready in 2017/2018 I don't think they would have been as successful.

It was the carrot on a stick mentality, chasing those just out of reach goals.

It's not CR'a fault, I don't think he is a good manager having read more into his history (gaming and film) and seeing what's transpired with SC.

I initially backed BECAUSE of CR, but my opinion of him changed through the course of this process.

I'm not going to call him names, I don't really respect him the way I did. I admire his ability to sell, I dislike his management style.

I sincerely hope they manage to cobble something together, but I do not for a second think it will resemble anything like they are selling.

I just don't think it's technically possible. Too many moving parts and balance on too frail a foundation.

I would love more than anything to be wrong, I still have some skin in this game...

Like many here we just want to play a good game, spite for Crobberts isn't going to negate that. Not with this lot.

Oh I played both xwing, tie fighter and wing commander games. I liked the Lawrance Hola d series better but I didn't let that take away my fun playing wing commander.

I also liked both NES and Sega back then I was just happy to play ;)

Well I could've pointed out that I agree with him that Mice should have attributed that quote as it's an very true old-school saying.

Also...next time you quote that, do it correctly, and attribute please.

"Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead ...but don't be surprised if we don't uphold them." - Derek Smart

But not to Derek Smart as he implied. That quote was said by Warren from Epic.

As Derek knows, or used to know, guess old age has taken its toll. [rolleyes]

Maybe this too is a language barrier.

We are not claiming FD invented these things, we're saying SC went from "oh no we don't need any of that, we're blazing our own trail" to wholesale copying methods/designs. it's flattery really, it's because the way they'd been worked out was really effective. Yes as you say many many others have done similar things, but they've not chosen to mimic those other systems - they've chosen this one.

That's what we mean - hopefully that's explained it for you and we can lay this to rest and not lose more pages to terribly clever word games.

ps. apologies if i'm overstepping the mark speaking for others there, but i think we've covered this topic too before and that's about fair

Well this is somewhat different from what some others there Claim.
But well lets go with that for now.

Because Nope. Sorry but they did not.
No Offense to you.
But Seriously. Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are entirely Different Designs.
They got some Crossovers cause they are both inside that really wide definition of "Space Sim"

But ED is an Space Piloting Simulator Game. In which Piloting is the thing which is actually the Big Center. Almost everything rotates along you Piloting a Spaceship.
SC is an Space MMO Game. The Piloting is part of your Characters ability to Control Crafts. Its a Part but not the Center of the Game.

ED is an Procedural Generated Universe which is based on the Idea of Massive Scale usage of PG Technology. Down to the Point of even Generating Stations and the Backround Sim.
But SC so far is using Procedural Generation only for certain Parts of the Game. While most of the relevant stuff especially Stations etc are Crafted.

If you were attempting to define it.

Star Citizen will be an MMORPG which Plays in Space.
While Elite Dangerous is an Space Flight Sim with RPG Elements and Open Multiplayer.

They are completely different Games. And their Usage of Systems is really entirely Different.

Sorry Man.
But Star Citizen is in no way a Mimic of Elite Dangerous lol.
And Sorry. But using Commonly used Techniques and Systems. Is not Stealing or Copying other Peoples Ideas.

What your Claiming is that GTA would Steal Ideas from Need for Speed just because both Games use Cars and include Police Hunts etc.
As an sidenote. If your Older then me. I guess I stole from you the Idea of Breathing ;)

Its quite a Ridiculous Claim Mate.
I assumed People to be talking about Stealing Techniques. Because that Claim at least makes Sense in the Meta.
But Claiming that SC is going to Copy ED is Absurd. Sorry.

No, ED simulates the known galaxy and then uses PG to fill in the blanks. Er, you do realize the ED stations are comprised of hand-crafted assets, right? The PG recombines them, just like SC plans to use for their station assets because they don't have the time or money to create 100s of unique stations. It only took them five years or so to mention it!

The engineer bases are placed there by artists. I mean, OBVIOUSLY you only use PG for certain parts of the game. It's not some magic formula that codes for you and creates a giant space sim! You're really dismissing all the great artists and devs who worked hard on ED while pretending just math does it all instead of the old world master craftsmanship CIG does.

But ED is an Space Piloting Simulator Game. In which Piloting is the thing which is actually the Big Center. Almost everything rotates along you Piloting a Spaceship.

You know damn well space legs are planned and we already have planetary landings and SRVs. If you're going to credit CIG for things they haven't accomplished yet, why not extend the indulgence to Frontier? Or at least acknowledge the SRVs?

Star Citizen will be an MMORPG which Plays in Space.
While Elite Dangerous is an Space Flight Sim with RPG Elements and Open Multiplayer.

It just sounds like you're describing the same thing, altho I sure as hell have NEVER seen Star Citizen described as an MMORPG by anybody from CIG. Have you? Link please. Otherwise you're just pulling it out of some random orifice. Are you saying you understand game development MORE than Chris Roberts? Gasp.

"Is Star Citizen an MMO?

No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience."

Question: what's with the constant capitalization? You don't actually have to capitalize most of the words you do.

Then again, it's not like you answered anybody else's question. Would love to see you come up with a 3D radar in a game before Elite, say. I guess it's easier to ignore people tearing your argument apart when you are utterly wrong.

But you did try to cause an argument between LoD vs ED. This is a SC topic, you cannot just shift the topic to two other games because you cant stand the indisputable criticism against SC. Its really quite lame.

Understandable.
For a Fact SC Handling of some stuff is far from Perfect.

As I said earlier.
An Dev Team is usually the worst Choice for making Timetables.
Because they tend to really Love their Dreams. And thus are usually the Guys which want to Pack this and this and then this and this and oh this.... Into the Game. Making Perfect and thus never really going to be Finished. Because the List just Grows ever Longer.
In this the Crowdfunding is a Huge Problem. Because usually the Investors etc would Push for an Release and thus make sure that Work gets done towards an Release Ready Game. Which can be Sold.
This missing here causing massive Delays is to be Expected.

Now Delivering what was Promised.
HMMMM. Well this Depends on what you count as the Promise.

If you Read the Vision which Games usually have. I dont think I ever had a Game which Delivered what was Promised.
ED Being one of them.
So I am seriously not Expecting this "Breathing and Alive Universe in Real World Graphics" :)
This sort of Promise is typical Advertisement and Dreaming.

As for what can be Realistically Expected.
Well. Seeing that Demo on Gamescom. (I am living not even 30 minutes from there ^^) is surely something that would already make this an worthwhile Investment for me.
And the thing is that this is apparently already in a Condition good enough to be Showcased like this.

Now Mixing this Demo and the Systems used just in that.
And Setting it to an Universe of lets say 20-30 Solar Systems.
Would in my Eyes make for one Awesome Start of an MMORPG Game in Space.
One which I would Immediately Buy and Play even without any additional Promises being Made.

Sure some of that Stuff needs Polish and Bugfixing. But lets face it. From X3 to ED and Freelancer. Any Game we got needed that on Release.

And. Lets be Honest.
What you just wrote was an Critic based on Something.
But 90% of the other Posts here. Are Biased and Ridiculous Accusations and Hatred. With no Base or Reasoning to Speak off.

As an sidenote.
Technically Possible is anything to be Honest.
If you know the Gothic Games. Where any NPC has a Name and an Daily Rythm.
And Add to that other Games like Gamecube Games where NPCs even got different Weekly Rythms and Random Pathing.

You know that all of this is Possible.
Now doing this for a 100 Solar Systems which would likely have over 300 Stations and over 500 Different Planetary Bases etc etc.
Would be an Insane Workload. But Technically still Possible ;)

Boarding Combat with 300 Players. Would be Lagging like Hell. Especially if its done within a Space Fight of another 100 or so Ships each having maybe 1-4 Players ^^
But its Technically Possible :p

A Battle between 1000 Players which Fight and even Board each other. Would likely Lag Worse than the Epic Space Battle of 4000 Players in EVE :p
But it is indeed Possible ;)

Question: what's with the constant capitalization? You don't actually have to capitalize most of the words you do.

I'd say its the forum's way of removing his entirely caps-locked post. Usually when you write an entire post in caps the forum software changes it to capital first letters.

An Dev Team is usually the worst Choice for making Timetables.

So who makes the timetables and roadmaps? The producer's mom? Dabney Coleman? Elves?

And where are you getting this production expertise from? A strong feeling, personal experience... elves?

over 300 Stations and over 500 Different Planetary Bases etc etc.
Would be an Insane Workload. But Technically still Possible

Oh, sure. Seeing the lightning fast speed they've been building stations so far, I can totally see how not using PG for bases and handcrafting over 300 stations and over 500 different planetary bases is technically possible.

In what timeframe do you see CIG handcrafting over 300 stations and over 500 different planetary bases, incidentally?

I'd say its the forum's way of removing his entirely caps-locked post. Usually when you write an entire post in caps the forum software changes it to capital first letters.

Ah, I see. Now that I realize he's typing all this in all caps, it all makes sense.
