I see I'm not the only person banging on about Outerra when it comes to PG. I really don't get why people think CIG are even in the game, never mind any good at it, when they're planting individual trees in Cryengine Sandbox...

I think Outerra is probably the best PG world generator out there at the moment - the way it adds detail to cliffs is really impressive - but more than that, it creates scenes that are often more realistic and graphically superior to many hand crafted assets from AAA titles.

I think FD do really really well with theirs and I'm excited to see what they come up with once erosion, glaciation etc can be added to the mix on atmosphere planets.

Was pretty surprised when I saw that video you linked of a guy from Citcon shouting to CR "shame on you!"...didn't expect that from a typical Citcon attendee, I must confess.

It was great, I just wish they also shouted "Get off the stage you tart".

Would love to know who it was.

I don't think it was binned but it has definitely fallen way down in priority. I wouldn't blame them, really. VR is not going to take off like people think it will. At least not for a few more years. Barriers to entry are too high, only a limited number of people are willing to strap a sweat box to their face for hours, and yet more people are nauseated by the whole experience.

When we can have lightweight, untethered, comfortable and affordable HMDs, then there will be a revolution (Google Daydream looks very promising if solid streaming can occur over wifi). For these reasons, I wouldn't give any dev a negative mark for deprioritizing VR. It is a lot of man hours for minimal ROI.

Its a fair point IF they hadnt made a stretch goal and a number of sales out of it. VR IS niche no doubt but space sims fit the niche perfectly and i suggest the number of VR folk will be higher than average in a space game.

Besides CR says he wants SC to be leading the charge not following the herd ;)

Back in the day DB said as many as 10% of ED backers were VR users and that was in the days of the DK1 and early DK2 days with products not even on the consumer market.

I am not saying its a top of the pile priority but it was a stretch goal so i expect it to be honoured

If there's anything better, I've not stumbled across it yet... I guess with a lot of features like glaciation and river deltas Outerra gets something of a free pass because they're already in the SRTM data. Frontier have a lot of work cut out for them to add these proceedurally, but I don't think think it would be glaringly obvious if they're missing.

Very depressing read, even for SC skeptic like me. Never wanted it end up like this.

Indeed. Which is precisely why it was so upsetting to write. I almost binned it because I just felt that nothing we say or write is going to matter, because the project is finished.

I'm neck deep in mainframe at the moment - but I'll do a cover of Hawkwinds "Lost Johnny" when I get a chance :)

Space Rock for Space Games :) buy a Polaris!

Went to see them back in the "In Search Of Space" days. Fantastic. I still have the album with the weird booklet inside. I am old.[hehe]
Look forward to the song.

No comment really required

“Actually, [it was put together] with not a large team, because a lot of the focus has been on Squadron 42. We’re still working through, and obviously we’re going to show a lot of that stuff later. We just wanted to show what we could do with new technology. It’s just the start of it, because even the environments we have now, it’s just a bit of R&D work from five or six environment artists just working on how we can make stuff look. So, we know when we’re really into the production pipeline and making these planets and so forth, we can just [start making] amazing planets.”

In 3.0 my [cenzored]

Maybe it was just an internal joke.

That was not a joke. That guy had put the audience to sleep and they knew it. It's not really his fault though, that web thingy was probably quite a bit of work and he was proud of it. It just wasn't the right venue for this kind of detailed presentation. A few screenshots would've sufficed. But they needed the padding, and padding they got.

:(
I pity the guy, you could see he was overly nervous and that a lot of work went into it. It would be shame if it all went down the drain.
