The Star Citizen Thread v5

You know, it's just hit me after reading the latest patch notes. Does the word "crunch" (as in often unpaid, severe overtime to hit a deadline) comes from the sound of programmers' hopes and dreams of "making games" being crushed?

First of all, crunch on the week of Christmas, CR is Scrooge-worthy isn't he?

But no I think crunch is universally the sound of management putting their boot on the necks of developers who would very much to get up and use the little-devs room but haven't solved the issue where, when in a lunar eclipse with Saturn in transit, the application turns white and screams shrilly for 3 seconds once per minute.

I always thought Crunch was used purely to achieve a specific development target for a fixed budget in either time or funds.

Depends on the shop. Many places I've worked over the years needed a crunch once a month. Managers that ignored dev estimates and ran with their own seat of the pants timelines, then demanded overtime from the devs so they wouldn't look bad in front of their bosses. But that can't be what's happening at CIG right?

(Note there were good experiences as well, where me and the team loved what we worked on and pushed to do things in superhuman timeframes because it was an important goalpost, even if it wasn't a realistic one at 40-45 /h per week. The difference was always management acknowledging that it was an insane deadline but we knew it was important, vs management implied we must have been slacking and that sort of thing could cost some team members their sponsorship which... when a few people to half he team is almost literally slave labor it creates a tough environment to say "no" in. But I digress.)

Hi guys, I'm being tempted really for the first time by SC as a playable game. This thread is humungous, though. Is it worth playing in its current condition?

I will add to the "wait for a free fly weekend" choir - for me, and I repeat for me, its really not enjoyable or sometimes even unplayable at the current state. Despite what you may hear on the official forums we have been stuck with very buggy and messy build for months or even more.
Now, there is mystic fligth model update around the corner and some cool stuff so I too will wait and see. But for now I dont recommend jumping in. Also take anything on official forum with a pinch of salt - the negative comments are heavy moderated over there...

edit: I`m downloading PTU 2.6 update, will comment on my experience sooner or later.

Feliz Navidad Rolan!

The super-big-fancy webco I worked for ended up going into crunch a couple of days every week due to lack of near-delivery change control. It slowly broke almost everyone there. I really hope Barry and all get a decent xmas holiday

Looks like free-fly is incoming. Not sure Id bother if it isn't for 2.6. 2.5 was such a mess when I tried a while back. Twice, actually with the second time far worse than the first.

I presume I'd have to logon to do that, but I can't. I could email them I suppose, but whats the chance of getting a reply down that road ?
An email will have a much better chance than doing nothing at all. :)

(I know many of you don't like our moderators, but they honestly and wholeheartedly do try to keep along the line down the middle of the road on moderation to this thread)
We don't have to like them, we just need to respect them.

And frankly, I think the mods are genuinely funny and interesting folks.

The CIG Q&A guys are going for it preety hard-core. They are at the 12th 2.6 patch released now I think as the L letter is the latest patch.

The emerging Fan-made clips with 2.6 footage are nothing short of amazing, better than the one IGN one imo lol

That videos convince me once and for all frontier made the right choice not having 3rd view in elite dangerous.

No need to. CIG are building the game in the order CR feels is the best order. His order of building said game may not agree with alot of people...
People like professional software designers, coders and folks who have successfully produced games? Yes, we agree.

Star Citizen currently has 221 viewers on Twitch.
Elite Dangerous has 201.

Not bad for a boring & shallow niche game released years ago vs a behemoth of the gaming industry that just gave access to a new content patch to a lot of it's playerbase.
Ever notice car accident videos get lots of views? People love to see others doing demonstrably stupid things then paying the price for it. It's usually followed by laughter.
