News Elite Dangerous 2.4 The Return Release Date

And there it is, the perennial gamer mistake: assuming your definition of fun is everyone's definition of fun. Personally I think some complex interaction would be far more fun than yet another thing to shoot.

I seem to remember the original Elite not having any diplomacy at all and everyone was quite happy with that. And what did we all do when the Thargoids showed up? Oh yeah, we shot them.

Some food for thought....

My comment (while very tongue-in-cheek seeing that I am American, and a Veteran at that as well) was not entirely out of context from our history. However, I digress... I have seen first hand what humankind does to things it deems as different or unknown.

Am I the only one who thinks that at least a shot to communicate and talk to the Thargoids to better ourselves would not have been a bad idea, surely the money spent on the weapons tech could have been used for peaceful purposes of research and testing?

As a race (one that ranks up there with the flu-virus and locusts) we have a tremendously short sighted history of being our own worst case scenario. I fear that we may end picking up the tab on a check that we can't pay...

Greetings Commanders,

We’re very pleased to announce that Elite Dangerous 2.4 The Return will be released on Tuesday 26 September.

On launch day you’ll be interacting with the most mysterious and deadly things you’ve encountered in the Elite Dangerous galaxy – the Thargoids.
Elite Dangerous 2.4 The Return will then continue to roll out with interactive narrative-based content emerging over the coming months.

We can’t wait to see how you fare against these potentially deadly adversaries on Tuesday 26 September.

You can see the cinematic short on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38bHNSB4cDM

Good luck out there,

Ed

I love to fly the drone ship in 2.4 [alien]

While I'd say that many who play this game exhibit an above average intelligence and/or education, given the witnessed discourse between some here on the forums, I would point out that many of the folks you mentioned may not be. If you take this into account, some of the comments made by them on these forums will make more sense. If possible. Or at the very least, could be identified as such and taken with a very large grain of salt. ;)

I too am an American, and a Veteran ('72-'81), and while I enjoy playing a game such as this in a manner that I would not mimic in real life just for 'entertainment' purposes, I too wouldn't mind if other options/actions were offered regarding interactions with the aliens.

I have no history with Elite, having just started the game this year, so I have no insight into what transpired in previous versions. I have no problem taking out Bad Guys, but I'm not really interested in any 'shoot on sight' scenario without doing a little investigating first. Given the opportunity of course.

Yep, for me it's all about survival. The way I see it at this point in time is that the Thargoids are a much superior race with a far better arsenal than we have. I'm interested to see how many of the players that up to now just prefer to blow things up for the sake of it will calm down a bit when their bank roll runs down quickly after ending up on the other side of the stick and ending up back in a Sidey.

Devil in the Dark

Some of the wonderful people of Florida are from another planet, you'll have to excuse their behavior. They are not representative of the entirety of America. Of course, I think we all have sections of even our local communities that seem to have come from another time or place so it's probably not fair to generalize.

I wouldn't tar all Americans with the same brush. I guess in a whole galaxy full of humans your were bound to have some that were wanting the first communication to be sent on the pointy end of a missile.

The Thargoids are insectoid and so it's likely that they think with a hive mind. They may not understand the concept of individuality.

Of course the Thargoids were the baddies all those years ago, and although I'd have preferred more of a dialogue before it came to the crunch, I'm happy for this tradition to continue today.

Not playing Elite from 1984 anymore are we?

Doesn't matter, this is a game to be enjoyed, not bogged down by real world political thinking which is driving us towards war as it is. Personally i'd like something else aside from other humans to shoot at. I find it insane as it is that there aren't any more sentient lifeforms for us to interact with in game as it is. You can't tell me humans are the only race in the universe apart from Thargoids. That's just plain stupid. That aside, I don't want to be diplomatic, I don't want to talk to them, this is a game, give me something to shoot at.

I would have preferred different options as well. I suppose as the story unfolds there's always an option for some kind of peace. If the crew of the Enterprise can flip some Borg, perhaps one of our Elite organizations can flip some Thargoids.

Guns and Diplomacy

I'm loving the new trailer, and excited about seeing Aliens in the Elite universe, but as a hardcore explorer who spends most of the game in the black exploring new worlds and systems I really REALLY hope that the game will balance pew pew with diplomacy.

Insect or otherwise the Goids (we're into brevity out here in the black) should be a race we can communicate with... not just pop missiles off at. Imagine early settlers trading with native Americans - but in this scenario the Natives had Uzi's and the encounters were far more tilted in their favour. Imagine the delicate detente you could build out in space by respecting their culture, earning their respect... going all Grizzly Adams in frontier country. Perhaps providing them with the Goid evuivekant of pelts in deep space. Even having a kind of faction standing, that never means your in but you're just not as out as other humies.

I hope elite doesn't miss a trick, I have faith that they will leave the door to peace open amoungst All the sabre rattling, missile popping and Fed propaganda. It's like we say in the black...

Ain't no Goid ever called me space junk... shiny...

"Good afternoon sir, I am an American, would you mind stepping out of cover so I can get a better second look at you? What? No, it's been a perfectly acceptable tactic since we alleviated those pesky indians of their land. And don't get me started on some of our extinct animals, they were so strange looking that they had to go..."

*Cocks back the hammer of the shotgun*

"There we go, just a little more to the left so I don't hit the Popeye's Chicken you are standing in front of...."

Just think... that's just the mental giants south of the Mason-Dixon line... waving their confederate flags and whistling through 2 of their last 5 teeth. You know... the true face of America.

Hmm, let's us see, I live south of the Mason-Dixon, my significant other hails from Kentucky, we have all our teeth, both of us are college grads, in fact my wife has two degrees, education and registered nurse.

Don't eat at Popeye's, don't own a shotgun or hunt but I do own several handguns, part of my professional equipment from previous employment.

My son is a working attorney and my daughter is finished with her second degree and works as well. The rest of our family also live south of Mason - Dixon and similarly educated and independent.

When you use a broad brush, make sure you have paint that takes, otherwise your comments are quite transparent.

Y'all have a nice day.

Actually, I enjoyed surviving until my drive was repaired, then legging it out of there. But yes, presumably most players would have taken them on. It's only human nature to destroy things one doesn't understand. :)

Did you... did you just... oh God, you did, didn't you?

Did I Uninstall? No, not yet. Waiting till frontier expo, giving Elite another chance as promised. Though (pssst) I have cheated on her played with "X-Rebirth VR edition" a bit, and getting even more keen to revisit her older sister "X: Rebirth" with kinky toys mods. I'm also officially in separation phase on a break since spring, and am seriously considering throwing her things out moving the game out of my SSD.

IRL - happily married, why? ;-)

I see that sarcastic, self-deprecating humor is lost on some people... too bad people can't share a sense of humor like Mel Brooks, or Richard Pryor. Oh well, to each their own...

In any case, I'll keep laughing for you instead... have a wonderful day too.
