Thargoid Non-Aggression Pact!

Lol im sorry, so they just have all the makings of a nutcase then?

"Your honour, my client is no danger to the public providing he is not approached, touched, spoken to, refereed to, looked at, and no valuable items are in his vicinity."

Your right guys lets offer them tea and biscuits i see no hostility from our civilised alien friends.....

I get the feeling you're looking at these new additions as nothing more than 'things to shoot at', rather than being part of a storyline. Just because an entity would rather you didn't encroach upon their space or act in any way aggressively towards them, doesn't mean they must be shot at.

Hostility is not even the same as aggression. Hostile means that they don't want to be disturbed otherwise they will attack. Aggressive means they will simply attack you regardless (I'm simplifying here, because I can't believe I'm having an argument about something that was supposed to just be a bit of RP fun...)

I'm with you, but not just because it's the sensible thing to do, but also because ...

WE CANNOT HURT THEM NO MATTER WHAT WE DO. (yet...)

I tried this in another thread, seems people would rather shoot first. Add me to the list of those with SOME common sense. Also, watch the videos...they're not overtly aggressive (I swear there's something going on with the colorations...)

"Your honor, I was attacked by this man when I stole his stuff, got in his face and eventually punched him. I should be freeeeee!"
Wonder why they'd be hostile to a race with that mindset...

Nicely exaggerated, but no....They shoot you just for being close, so for accuracy:

"Your honour, he was walking to close to me, i had to empty my M16 into his chest!"

The thing is for ALL the Thargoid attacks none have left the "snot attack" effect we associated with them. Maybe there is other aliens out there that are equally as hostile to us which the feds "mistook" as Thargoid?

400m is more than "walking close to me". 400m is "close enough for my ship to holler a prox. warning, so a threat of crashing together is real". And considering the thought process "I'm going to shoot him because he's hostile" indicates that you have weapons on your boat, this can be
"He was walking close to me while I'm carrying a rifle pointed at him". Still seems aggressive on your part.

I come at him, stay a respectful distance away and he doesn't blow me into dust. Seems pretty non-aggressive. Aggression breeds aggression.

(Still a bit of RP fun to me, but I'm weird)

We shot first the first time they came.
We shot first the second time they came.
Must we shoot first the third time they come?

What if they engage you first? What's the stance on self defence?
imperial ships are your friend. They're very good at running away. Why do you think we have only seen federal wreckage until now?
Talking about those darn Feds, they're a lot more aggressive than our friends the Thargoids when you get a wee bit to close to their ineffective little capital ships.

Although, if the only option is war, there will be war. I look forward to watching countless human vessels break before me.

In answer to OP, I agree. I think they might be sound aliens, if only we would listen to them...

I'd be delighted to join your cause. I don't care how many times people are shot at by Thargoids, that may mean that select Thargoid ships are hostile NOW but there's absolutely 0 proof that they were to begin with.

Accprding to official lore back in the 80s we could well have unknowingly expanded into their space. Nothing they did up until we started shooting at them was hostile. If humanity had found another space faring race and needed to know more about it, what better way than something that could quickly gather Intel while minimising risk of harm to either party? Put another way, what's better than pulling them to the side (interdiction), running a quick test (scan), then sending them on their merry way?

On top of all that there's talk of the Thargoids having their own civil war, and that throws a 3 storey spanner in the works! Just because a Thargoid ship takes down a human ship, does not make them all bad. If they are capable of civil war that means there are multiple parties with multiple agendas and different intentions.

I'm open to anyone who can present solid undeniable proof that they are as bad as people make them out to be. Media such as Noctover's video is not proof.

Every Thargoid I've encountered has attacked me straight away after scanning me.

So it's not like they're putting any effort in to avoid starting a war.

Without video evidence, I would have to politely disbelieve you, video evidence currently supports the not shooting first theory - getting too close, bumping, shooting or 'stealing' something they're scanning or about to scan all tend to cause them to become hostile... but I've yet to see a Thargoid simply open fire. The one or two that seem to show them shooting first clearly shows they are much too close, and is very likely unintended behaviour which I would hazard a guess will be patched out.

So if I take the time to resolve my shadowplay issues and show you a video of my ship entering one of these signal sources, and not moving aside from keeping the Thargoid in shot, you'll abandon your foolish crusade? :)

They may not be the enemy...

spoilers if you have not read the ED books
But I'm convinced that the Klaxxions will be. These guys, the Oresrians, are more just using us as a squishy shield from the real threat.

I'm curious - have you shot at barnacles? Shot at unknown probes? Seems to be lots of encounter variations, and I am wondering if previous actions affect how the Thargs respond after a scan. Some folk seem to go unmolested (unless they get too close). Others (like yourself) seem to be almost on a Kill On Sight (KOS) list.

While I've done all those things, it's my cargo that gets their goat. I carry a mix of Thargoid tech and Ancient Relics.

First time I was shot at I had a Thargoid Probe, Thargoid Link, 2 Meta Alloys and 4 Ancient Relics. I've since ditched the link for a cyclops tissue sample.

Regardless of my cargo though, a species that was interested in avoiding diplomatic issues would not begin shooting so quickly unless they didn't care whether we took it the wrong way or not.

Did you remain stationary the entire time when they scanned you? If you remain within 400 meters for too long they attack you even if they were the ones to get that close in the first place. Hit reverse immediately when they finish their scan of you and they won't attack you (unless you have something in your cargo hold that will make them attack you).

It's certainly possible. Either way the ones we see at the moment are picking up human escape pods so that can be seen as a hostile act (though they could be abducting humans to learn about them so they could communicate with us as well). Either way, I think they are more hostile to those actually part of the human governments and will only act against independent pilots if they attack or are carrying things they want.

Once again, a reasonable race that cared about not starting armed conflicts would not expect you to know to move backwards.

They attack at the literal drop of the hat. That's not a peaceful species.

The humans committed genocide once against our Lords the Thargoids. I am sure they will not hesitate to do so again. I personally think we should give them another chance, however there are many who believe this belligerent and xenophobic species has had too many chances already. They will decide their own fate.
