News GalNet - postponing Community Submissions

Maybe wat they don't tell, there will be lesser community managers because they must work and prepare for the soon new community of their new IP
because christmasy holiday will be the time for special preorders for their new IP and people buying it will flood the forums

If they were hired as managers for the new IP, then they wouldn't be Elite Dangerous Community Managers now would they?

A couple of times when people began to argue about in game events, GalNet submissions became heated to the point of insult throwing (with one example leading to the neutered system we have / had). Any new system would have to get round that while not destroying the community around it.

You mean the time when Ian disregarded his own rules and did the equivalent of publishing not just a mere speech, but direct intent for action by one of the lore faces which were SPECIFICALLY mentioned as being out of bounds?

How could that go wrong...

No, it was the childish ranting afterwards that pretty much destroyed the GalNet submissions thread and the community around it. That, plus a stupid DMCA 'request' in another unrelated event.

You're correct on the hiatus for the time being.

We've more submissions than news slots and CG slots available for many months to come right now.

Hi Brett,

Does that mean we will now have actual authored content in Galnet? Rather than procedurally generated expansion and conflict reports, and the odd CG announcement? The number of player-created stories in Galnet in the past year has been minimal, and buried underneath auto-generated reports.

EDIT: Apologies for my tone, but I am furious. There was still a glimmer of hope with me that FD enjoyed player created content, that they thought it would make the game richer and more alive, that indeed players could blaze their own trail and have an impact on the galaxy.

But every step they make seems to be the opposite, and please consume the content we put in front of you. EMERGENT CONTENT NOT ALLOWED

Then maybe the person having the "position of responsibility" should have lived up to it.

What part of "the rules were bent in favour of specific individuals" wasn't clear enough? And I don't even blame those individuals anymore. It was Ian's responsibility to uphold that standard.

And therein lies the problem Rubbernuke. The problem of "the community around it". The problem that only a group of people who had Ian's favour was able to post proper news that have any meaning. Meaning proven through the fact that they caused uproar whenever that favouritism went too far.

Are you saying that you should have the freedom to roll over everyone as long as you have the favour of the gatekeeper?

Perhaps the people posting should have been more grown up about it rather than acting like screaming toddlers. Take a look at one of the rules from the CG submission thread:

Harassment to the development team will result in your submission being rejected on the spot. It may additionally result in restricted access from this forum section.

And why shouldn't I be able to write about a character? You could have done the same- in fact any player had the same 'power' I did. I got round the rules by occasionally writing about events or items around the characters. Archon and Tribute Day, and Mahon and his wristwatch.

Grown up have the capacity to understand abuse of power and react to it. You are only covering your position as one of those who profited from Ian's approach.

No, you could mention characters, but you couldn't attribute words or actions to them. It was one of the rules.

Your Mahon wristwatch article attributes actions to him and not only that, but it trampled over the efforts and achievements of other people in order to happen.

And thus, you are just proving exactly what was wrong with your "galnet community". You thought you have the privilege to exploit the actions of others for your amusement and the person responsible for STOPPING you instead gave you the green light.

You want to blame someone? Then have some self reflection first.

All I can see you doing right now is saying:

Oh sure, Galnet had an elite community which was able to disregard the large majority of rules enforced. And it was great, if only those plebians who didn't like us making news in their behalf didn't ruin it for us.

I'm sorry for your giant chip on your shoulder, but you take your chances when you submit a story. I simply took more chances than you. With my story in question, I wrote it so that the Leesti gov change actually made it into local newsfeeds at all since Powerplay characters got exactly zero coverage. Plus, being the person that I am wanted to have a bit of fun with the single image we have of Mahon for two years.

You thought you have the privilege to exploit the actions of others for your amusement and the person responsible for STOPPING you instead gave you the green light.

Sorry? Exploit what? Actions in game can be talked about by anyone, from any viewpoint.

Hmm.

Well I can understand there being a backlog. I've submitted a Galnet item for 2.4, not to mentioned writing BrettC about stuff related to it. At least in the case of my own submitted items, they will stale quickly, and be forced clear by time (which they probably are, already).

Here's to looking forward to the return, and it being better than ever.

This was obviously a directed and targeted slight at the AEDC and Wolf 406 Transport & Co. player factions. As a result, I fervently hope they show FDev what for and mass-quit the game.

Oh look, just took more chances. Never heard that one before.

Normal people want to achieve something first before they announce it. So the amount of chances they would take would be based around their efforts reaching a fruitful state first. Clearly not, in your case.

Maybe you shouldn't be taking chances on behalf of others, without consulting what they wanted to achieve first? Because YOU took a chance by stepping on top of OUR efforts.

And yes, actions in game can be talked by anyone, from any viewpoint. Too bad that you never expressed a viewpoint, but rather a report newspiece which is factual in nature.

You embody everything wrong with the Galnet community that you are identifying as part of.

Your story would not get published, I wanted to write a fluff story that involved Mahon. I had an idea and bashed it out. Here is the story:

As the Leesti system celebrates deposing the The Justice Party of Leesti and establishing democratic rule, one unexpected casualty of the fighting has hit the Alliance Prime Minister directly.

During intense skirmishes, ships carrying the last known original parts for the Casiko M1 wristwatch were destroyed by pro-democracy Leesti forces. This model of chronometer is a favourite of the Prime Minister who is often pictured wearing one.

However, due to recently uncovered evidence of ties with the The Justice Party of Leesti, Casiko who make the watch were liquidated leaving only a few shipments of original parts. Despite huge advancements in 3d printing technology, Caskio watch owners are renowned for refusing to use robotically produced components, insisting everything is handmade.

The Prime Ministers stance on this matter is unclear, but other watchmakers have begun meeting Alliance Bureaucrats and positioning their products to replace the defunct and politically awkward Caskio.

Sadly the people who ruined it all were the people who could not argue in an adult manner. I've had times when other people have challenged what I wrote and it became a rational discussion, it certainly never got to the point where posts were deleted and staff got harassed. Other times people played along- I wrote a story that used the name PanGalactic. Sirius players pointed out this was a Sirius based company, and rather than throw the toys out the pram, we wrote a follow up story together using the character I had invented.

Sadly what happened with this just showed why submissions were curtailed- players mouthed off and that was it.

We will eventually be bringing this back. Ultimately the amount of time that it took to review submissions, and give feedback, didn't quite match up to the number of articles that we were able to publish. We didn't want it to continue being a frustrating experience for those submitting storylines. We don't have a date for when it will be coming back, but we will be bringing it back in the future. We think players being able to tell their story is important, and we love how many of you do this in lots of different ways across other platforms. We'll review the process and let you know when we've come up with a more efficient and effective way of making these work. Sorry if the first post wasn't clear enough!

Thank you Ed. I agree the old system was frustrating. And Ian was the butt-end of a lot of anger he didn't deserve.

Thanks Ed ... we never doubted you for a minute! (whistles)

You are the one who can't engage in an adult manner if you think people are obliged to collaborate with you to minimise the slander you would throw at their side, while also downplaying the core outcome (aka, the liberation of Leesti) in order to satisfy your appetite for making random articles.

Go get a grip.

By the way, I love how your article also proves that Ian didn't even proof read, since he couldn't even be bothered fixing the most obvious typo of getting the name of the watch company wrong the second time. All that mattered is growing some trust by playing his game well enough and, boom, you are now able to defy the rules.

But, once again, due to how a position of responsibility works. It's Ian's burden that he let this happen, not yours.

Thanks for the clarification, Ed. Looking forward to "The Return" of player submitted news. Always happy to help if a means for community assistance in this area is permitted in the future. Several of us used to run /r/ElitePress for that very reason.

In the mean time, I'll look for other things to channel creative energy into...
