ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I would say if you are in doubt, find someone to let you try it out. I would be more than happy to let a local forum member from here have a go on my rig, just PM me (I am 15 miles from Cambridge UK)

That's a very kind offer. Lol does anyone with a DK2 live in Kent or South London UK ;)

Been doing several hours of fighting with the DK2 and proper camera-based position tracking yesterday. The position tracking is still not quite perfect, there's some stuttering with lateral movement, but most of the time it's unnoticeable. Dogfights are amazing, with the player able to put the head near the side window of the viper and look outside.

For trading and such, I'd play with a normal screen however. It is less of a strain.

Yep, I live in Bexley area and have a DK2 up and running on Elite. Ive also offered to demo it to an iRacing forum member who's coming all the way down from Enfield to check it out once its up and running on iRacing, which I would hope is within the next week or so. You can join in for that? :)

You mean you're happy at going back to 2D?! :S:eek:

I tried it the other day just to see what the new beta gfx looked like in full glory...they were nice I have to admit...but after 10mins I got bored of my now "tiny" monitor that just looked so flat and 2D.

I don't think I could ever go back to a monitor now to play Elite. OR DK2 has ruined monitors for me...Similar to what Chris Morris and Brass Eye did to me regarding comedy :D

Even though I couldn't head tracking working yet ....so much this.

Its not like looking into a movie/tv screen and seeing a little bit of depth. Its like you're inside the screen and the depth is infinite.
It was very strange ....

Still no head tracking? Did you close all three processes or use the closing app?

posted in off topic but there may be interest for some here.

sorry the links got borked - I posted elsewhere 1st - I may edit later but am at work so...........

Did it work?

If anyone is going to Fantasticon a week on Saturday in Hull, there will be several DK2s to test there.

I'll be there with my DK2

I traded my way up to an Anaconda using nothing but the DK2... My only issue was using the Galaxy map, but now that is working its 100 % rift :)

I've noticed a few mentiones of directtorift.exe for comaptability etc.

Someone mentioned it in the Helix RC for reducing judder. I haven't got the exe though. am I missing something?

Isn't this in reference to demos that have been updated? For example RedOfPaw released two versions (one of them is directtorift.exe). Could be wrong but I think thats what you mean...

It's a just a case of the Unity engine spitting out two versions of the project, one of which has "directtorift" in it's title and will automatically render to the rift screen, whether it's in extended or direct mode.

It's not an app that does something on a general level.

Yup. Besides, ED works with full DK2 6DOF headtracking anyway without any extra tools.

How do others find using the side panels with the DK2 where you look left or right and they pop up? It's great that you can look out of the window (I'm referring to the Sidewinder here, no experience of other ships yet) without the side panels popping up but personally I find that I then have to look too far downwards to then get them to appear. I think a slight adjustment is necessary as I find that with my eyes pointing straight ahead I'm looking at the bottom of the panel and have to look upwards to read the text on the panel.

I really don't think triple buffering is useful at all in VR. It just adds multiple frames of latency between you moving your head and you seeing an updated image.

FWIW, I never shut down the Oculus Config Util.

^ Okay, appears it's a windows 8 thing, which is why I'm not getting issues on win 7.

I'm on Windows 7 x64

Maybe it was just different for me.. *shrug*
No harm in adding more guides :D

I have to say though, the experience of Elite Dangerous in DK2 is mindblowing. My jaw was in a chronic state of gaping in awe. As I sat in my cockpit, looking around inside the space station, standing up to look out the window to the side.. seeing things I hadn't really paid attention to before.. fumes of gas blowing from the ceiling of the hangar, particles flowing through the air.. Text was actually "fairly" legible, though sometimes you have to move forward to read.

And landing in the station feel almost like "falling"

Indeed. It's landing in the station that gives you the greatest sense of presence I find. It's a real place with a floor and a ceiling giving you an up and a down to reference against.

The freedom to look gives you the freedom to take stuff in that you otherwise couldn't. If you're docking on a monitor, you're staring the hatch, or you're focusing on the station from afar. With the DK2 on, you can fly straight at the station and take in the nearby planet through the cockpit canopy. It's getting to the point where I'm starting to recognise continental masses.

I agree with you, I have a 4k monitor and ED just looks gorgeous in 4k, but the OR just wins hands down

how to get rift dk2 to work

Found this on reddit

So today I did some experimenting. I wanted to see if I could supersample on the DK2. I didn't try too many resolutions, but I found I could go to 2560x1440 without too many issues.

I've only tried this in ED so far, but the difference is night and freaking day. Text is a LOT sharper and easier to read, and as expected a whole lot less jaggies which has the effect of making everything feel so much better.
I don't seem to be getting any jitter or judder from FPS issues, but I do seem to have a "stereo separation" issue when I move my head. Its most noticeable on very fast movements, but basically its like the two eyes can't keep up or something, and I see a double image until it does catch up.

For those who don't know how to do this (shame on you!): Supersampling is the process of essentially forcing the game to render at a resolution HIGHER than what you monitor can display, and then that higher resolution image is downsampled to your monitors native resolution. It is often called many, many different names, but supersampling is where it all started. You might see it called Downsampling, or something really technical like OGSSAA (Ordered Grid SuperSampling AntiAliasing), woah what a mouthful. Its supersampling.

Do some Googling to learn more, and there are some good guides out there on how to do it. Here is a fairly ok one: http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/454383-aliasing-be-gone-how-downsample-pc-games/

But essentially what you have to do is using the Nvidia or AMD control panel, you create a custom resolution for your DK2 "monitor" that is higher than 1920x1080, and you tell the GPU to scale to the monitors native resolution. Then once you have that custom resolution created, it will appear (or should appear) as an option in your games.

It isn't 100% foolproof and won't work in every game, but works in most. Also bear in mind that you are essentially rendering at that higher resolution, so obviously it takes more horsepower to do.

Make sure to turn FXAA OFF. When I had it on, it looked worse. With it off, it's significant.

If you have any luck with this, could you please post a screenshot of the settings in NVIDIA :)
