If a bit of thought was applied to who might be sold the station billboards, and the ads made to fit the overall setting, it's a great idea. A couple of games have already done something similar - it can work out OK. Didn't EVE do it the other way around, create an RL version of an in-game soft drink?

If they want to put in ads for the paint jobs for the ships you can buy in the store (which I imagine they would like too) this kind of text needs to be in there anyway.

So it might just be that. However, I have no issues with some mild form of third party ads as long as they are done in a way that feels coherent with the gameworld.

I agree with that 100%.

There must be many players of E : D old enough to have played Zool on Amiga, splattered with advertising.

And even older than that, lets not forget the seminal Space Invader reskins on the Atari 2600; Pepsi Invaders and Coke Wins. Adverts have been in games since the 1970's.

And lets be frank, if there are human space stations in 3300, you can bet your last pound that McDonalds will be advertising on it.

Bring it on.

I would love in-game advertising along the lines of Blade Runner, and would welcome the likes of CocaCola's money to support the game. All of the advertising would have to be 100% non-immersion breaking for products that could still be possibly around in 3300 - A Mars a day helps you work, rest and trade?

I wouldn't mind too much if they selected the ads carefully.

For example:
Coca-cola quite possibly will still exist in the year 3300 so it would make sense to see their adverts on the little TVs outside stations.

I would still rather pay a subscription though.

Not me - if it helps stave off monthly sub's then I'm all for it, as long as it's subdued and a bit tongue in cheek: 'Burger Emperor - home of the flame-grilled proto-burger' (now with real, potato-style fries!)'

Given that BladeRunner had paid advertising in it, as long as it is not atmosphere breaking it is no big deal for me..

remember they will be doing cosmetic paint jobs ect and put them for sale.

i believe they will be utilizing some of the station docking as ad for their cosmetics along with possible news about upcoming changes, or newsletter.

or i would at least make it so.

and i certainly wouldn't mind a funny animated ad in the hangar, "got popped? get a more attractive paint job, and be as you feel!", or "Give your ship the love it deserves!". :)

could totally see that working out, as long they keep their ads within the game universe and fitting, it won't break immersion, on the contrary, it will make it more alive and believable, in my opinion at least. xD

Oh my! First you are pushing for major changes to the game, about how vital it is to match the needs of the modern market, and how the world will end if these changes are not made - yet now you are asking for a refund?

You have misconstrued my arguments w.r.t the market, as I've argued the game should focus on better hauling mechanics, in particular by taking ideas from Eurotruck Simulator which bases its entire gameplay around hauling.

That discussion in any case, is entirely immaterial to being bait-and-switched like this. I didn't get to read the EULA before I bought the game and it has not been stated in any PR material that the game is going to be subsidized on advertising.

The game is already $50+ (most of us have paid a lot more than that), skins are already being sold - before launch - at $3-$5 each, it's not even being hosted on dedicated servers, and now I find out that there's going to be targeted advertising in the game?

This is pushing the line of acceptable to me and I don't support it. Asking about refunds should the game implement such advertising does not seem unreasonable. I think I am not the only one who would like to know how to go about getting a refund with this information coming to light.

You shouldn't take it personally, many places consider refunds to be a customer right. Whether you agree or disagree with their stance on an issue, they should still be allowed to get a refund.

I would be cool with this if it saved me money and was not super obtrusive.

Wow want a refund because they may do some advertising? They already are for in game made up industries and products. I am hoping they add advertising for their ship repair and painting services. Since they are selling custom paint jobs in the store, advertise it. It is an actual add for a real product. Now some will cry immersion breaking, but is it? Do you believe advertising will go away even they far into the future? If so I think your severely mistaken.

So advertise some of the services Frontier is providing, new paint skins for your ship. An advertisement for new computer voices. As long as it is one among the many of fake ones, but one they sell, why not? It will just say Frontier paining services, or Frontier ship accessories. Nothing to flashy just along the lines of what they do now. You see the name and you know oh something new in the store for my ship. Like any advertisement you can ignore it or not. Just realize ads will be in the future, just as they are now.

Also for immersion a space station is a place of commerce, you really expect no one to pay to have ads in them in the future?

Couldn't agree more. If Coke or McDonald's want to throw a couple of million squid at FD, go for it. There is already "in game" advertising, why would these companies exist in 3300AD, McDonald's is the largest buyer of beef in the world. So you really think they might go under?

Just drive down freeway in the US, there are billboards - usually for the next McDonald's - I don't eat there, but I don't mind then advertising.

If it helps FD and "makes sense" then why not. By make sense, I mean, you don't want to be advertising out of place things to Haulers, like Pampers or current TV shows.

However, Food or Drink still make sense. I could imagine a "smart" company would advertise "in lore" so something like a Mercedes's Benz Hyperspace Unit. That fits in game, with some humor.

What I would prefer not to see is shipping of Coke products, that might just be a step too far! Where the canisters have coke logos.

Personally not a big deal for me advertising if it helps fund the games development, however would prefer if it was used to advertise a non fictional brand with a fictional product, based within the current setting.

That's a cool idea. Who's to say that McDonalds, Coke, or Sony won't still be around hundreds of years from now? There is already advertising in the game - I don't really care if it's for Denebian Ale or Budweiser. But it would be kinda cool to be coming into a dock and see an ad for Lakon next to one for Pepsi.
