ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I did this, along with the numerous other tips people have suggested here and on reddit (e.g., drop the primary monitor resolution and increase its refresh rate to 75 hz, disable aero) and all told it's increased my FPS in starports by about 20 (from high 30's to high 50's). Still a bit choppy, but hugely improved. Gives me hope that with continued improvements in the OR drivers and the ED implementation we may be yet able to hit continuous 75 FPS, even with a mediocre graphics card like mine (GTX 760).

....and connecting the rift to the external electricity source removes a lot of the judder...

Mine just shipped! I got the next batch e-mail then checked my order page and it said shipped! I was getting worried as Japan was seeming rather neglected in terms of receiving batches! This puts me in line with most of the rest of the world it seems.

I'm a very happy chappy :D

Although if his pc wasn't capable of supplying 400mA on the USB ports it may possibly help. The number of times I've solved peoples USB problems by giving them a powered hub....

Hello.
Does anyone know when the Oculus SDK 0.4.1 will be implemented ?
Because I have a processor which doesn't support SSE4.1 so I can't play E:D with my DK2 :(

Thank you

But judder in the rift is caused by lack of frame rate, adding more power to the rift is completely irrelevant for this, its your computer that supply the rift with frames, the rift is just an extra display.

Its as if I would get higher FPS in a game by getting a better power cable for the monitor...

EDIT: On a note tho, there might be a lack of power in USB to make the IR diodes for the head tracking work at their full potential as they might be 12V diodes but only supplied with 5V from most USB thus external power might make the head tracking work better.

I have this issue too and I did open a ticket early last month and this ticket is still open (status is under investigation)... from the status of the ticket I guess this is not fixed yet.
There are some posts here in this thread that talk about some implementation issues with SDK 0.4.1 and maybe FD is waiting for SDK 0.4.2 for this to be addressed?
With Beta 1.04 released today my guess is Beta 2.00 will take a little longer as expected. Maybe because of this issue too? I was hoping that Beta 2.00 will fix the issue, however at this point I'm not longer sure about this.

So its not fixed on Beta 1.04, wont bother downloading it then :(

Just received mine last friday ! :D

Sure it's an awesome experience, and certainly the best game with Oculus Rift DK2 compatibility so far !
But I hope the devs will quickly add Direct Mode support as there are still some latency issue.
I'm already planning to order the final commercial version of the Oculus Rift with better resolution, as the texts are sometimes difficult to read.

For people saying you need a massively high-powered rig to have Elite: Dangerous run smoothly with the Oculus Rift DK2.... it simply isn't true!

I'm on Windows 7, and have an i7-920 CPU, 6GB RAM, and a GTX 580. Nothing is overclocked.
I'm able to run E:D at 75fps with no juddering and very, very few framedrops.

How?
By configuring the settings on your computer properly!!!

Here is what I did:
-Power on DK2, make sure it is in extended mode on Oculus Config util.
-Launch E:D, go to graphics options, and set it to the Rift mode with 75Hz. Put all settings on LOW, with Antialiasing, Anisotropic, and Ambient Occlusion all off (you should only have to do this once, it will have the same settings every other time you launch the game).
-Right-click on desktop and go into the Nvidia Control Panel.
-Make sure DK2 is set at 1920x1080, 75Hz on the resolution settings.
-Go to Manage 3D settings, global tab. Set VSync to ON, Triple Buffering to ON, Set Antialiasing, Anisotropic, and Ambient Occlusion all to OFF.
-Go to Program Settings Tab, Browse to find elitedangerous.exe (The actual game exe, not the launcher exe). Set to the same settings as above.
-Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Personalization, and set the Windows theme to Basic (this is VERY important).
-Open task manager, and kill wscript and OVRService_x64
-Open the E:D launcher, login, but do not hit "Play" yet. Place the E:D launcher window on your screen so that if you were to view it on your DK2, it would be over the left eye.
-Right click on desktop background, and go to Screen Resolution
-Set Display to the DK2, and for the Desktop to only show on the DK2. Screen rotated to proper orientation on DK2. Place the "OK" button on the screen so that you will see it with your right eye on the DK2.
-Hit OK, your monitor will turn off. Look into the DK2 right eyepiece and move your mouse and click the "Keep settings" button before it times out.
-Look in left eyepiece, click on "Play" button on E:D launcher
-After the logo plays, hit F12 to reset position.
-Get flying!!! :D

Note that I was getting some juddering with Windows in Aero mode, and with my main monitor still on and showing the desktop (even with DK2 as primary monitor). Changing those gave huge performance gains.

I would bet that with these settings, even someone with a GTX 480 or maybe lower can get buttery-smooth DK2 E:D performance.

Also, running everything on low does not make the visuals look like crap in E:D. With the still low-resolution of the DK2 and its screendoor effect, it is hard to tell the difference between high and low in the DK2.

People have probably posted settings settings similar to these already... I'm just confirming it does really help :D

I tried this but already am stuck at "-Launch E:D, go to graphics options, and set it to the Rift mode with 75Hz."
In E:D i don't have the option to set it to the rift. Only display 1 or 2.
Ok so maybe that's what you mean, and thus i tried that and continued.
But then at this step "-Look in left eyepiece, click on "Play" button on E:D launcher" I see E:D in the rift, but it's not Rift compliant. it's 1 screen instead of 2.

Any idea?

BTW I wasn't aware of this topic but I received my DK2 yesterday and ordered it May 16th from Netherlands.

I've played a good 3-4 hours straight daily in my DK2 since I got the game friday, absolutely in love. after spending a few days trying my luck (and failing a bit) to trade, I feel more confident making obscene maneuvers and have taken to trying my hand at conflict zone dogfights, and I really feel like I'm getting the most of my range of motion. There's something crazy about the times you see a flashing icon on your map, then physically turn around in your seat to look out top corner of your window to see a barrage of missiles arcing along your flightpath.

it's also terrifying if you're entering a station's airlock at high-ish speeds and a type9 suddenly spawns into view flat across the other side of the entrance.

For those of you still waiting on your devkit and are anxious to see if it's worth it, it's worth it. Even with the betabugs, this game is probably the proof of concept for how well the oculus can integrate itself into gaming in the future.

Seeing as we're still in beta, yes it still has its fair share of bugs and untuned bits and bobs (which I hope devs have already noted), but I figured I'd throw down what I've come across thus far-

Currently I've found:
• a number of menus will restrict the mouse to a smaller-than-screen box, often preventing you from clicking the cancel/back/confirm buttons toward the bottom of menus. You can use your menu navigation keys to bypass this issue, at least.

• most menus (like the station services) consider your cursor to be hovering an inch or so in front of the screen, so when you reach toward far areas (like the ok/cancel buttons at the bottom of a list) you have to aim a bit just past it. might just be intended parallax that exists in non-VR but it's especially offputting when you have the depth perception

• the galaxy map is a disorienting mess right now, so you have to hold your head still to avoid getting nauseous. Clicking towards the center will allow you to rotate, but you can't select systems by clicking. If you click anything towards the outer 50%(ish) of the screen (like if you want to use the left menu), it will tab out of the program. The only way to navigate your map to other systems is to use your keys to tab over to the search box, then enter the name of where you want to go (box is too small to read a thing so triplecheck your key placements!), or of systems you can see in your view, so you can slowly crawl across a chain of them.

• being in fullscreen (which the program forces in oculus mode) prevents you from getting screencaptures or streaming video of the game by any means, which really sucks if you're trying to get examples of these issues, and would definitely get in the way of getting video/streaming.

• because of the limited resolution compared to your view of a normal monitor (to which the game's UI is geared towards using), many of the smaller displays are hard to read without leaning way forward, if at all. Comm and ship information are particularly hard to read, and are moderately important when encountering other ships or planning around systems of particular influence. numbers for target Distance are pretty fuzzy, but the shape of numerals are recognizeable enough.

Text size changes either by choice or by virtue of being in a rift would be very welcome. Additionally, an optical zoom function would be good, for inspecting not only your menus but things out in front of you. Might be disorienting if it's just a FOV pinch, so maybe treating it like a mag lens or a large scope flipped down on your helmet would be more engaging

Samsung and Oculus partner to create Gear VR :

Hands on video http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/03/samsung-virtual-reality/

I guess the relatively weak gaming hardware, relatively weak apps, combined with the lack of 6DOF Oculus see this as a different market sector to the Rift?

Better resolution - hopefully the advances on one will benefit the other.

The camera pass through view with augmented reality is going to be a big hit. I think oculus made a genius move in collaborating with samsung. Computer enthusiasts have just become a second class citizen as far as the guys at oculus/facebook are concerned. The mobile market is where all the money is.

As long as that helps fund the development of "true VR" on the PC, then great. Mercedes do other cars besides their F1 flagship.

At the end of the day, this is just Google Cardboard customised for a specific (unreleased) phone type and model. I have a Durovis Dive which I have played with on my Samsung S3, and it's fun, but it's not a patch on what I've seen of the Oculus PC version so far.

I'm sure that the cv1 is going to get a huge technology boost from this, I'm not complaining. I'm just saying that the cv1 has more than likely suffered delays because of it and that pc will be a secondary market for them from now on.

Here is a video link of John Carmack talking about the technology and how he has been spending the last year working on it.
