ANNOUNCEMENT Gamescom Reveals - Fleet Carrier Details

Well, to put it this way...
Im half way to Beagle Point now - started january this year!
So needless to say:
a) I wont reach the bubble due december
b) i wont have the gazillion billion credits needed until 2025

when I come knocking on your carrier doors, pretty please with sugar on top, let me in...

Need NPC crew on the bridge now; no one person could fly such a behemoth of a ship...in which case, why can't we have NPC crew for the other ships?

I've been wanting NPC crew for years now. Since ship launched fighters where a thing. Why should that lazy sod sit in their extra dimensional bubble, when I can have them fly the fleet carrier or sit in the co-pilots seat, getting me my hot chocolate whenever I want one.

Taking a MASSIVE cut of ALL your profits while doing NONE of the work! IKR!

This was a thing in Frontier, where even medium ships needed a crew to lift off.

[FDev - Please H4X the crew wages to a competency based periodic retainer!]

Exciting news! Currently mining loads of void opals myself, guessing they'd cost CR 5bi... and it is possible Frontier won't have all questions answered/addressed when Fleet Carriers are released but I'm quite sure they will sort things out on the go.

It looks like we won't be able to drive them... just command them. That's a bummer. Also the "unique material" to refill them, means it will be quite a grind to move it. Well I think when I ask myself this is what I was waiting for to enjoy Elite again... I can say the answer is a hard no. I hope others will find fun with this new feature

If they nerf Void opals, this game's gonna be pretty much dead for me, which is really sad. It's the only way I'm ever going to dream of affording this Carrier thing.

In NMS, the Fleet Carrier had progressive development with fun opportunities to personalise it to your liking. Also, personalisation brought connectivity to more elements of the game, such as creating fleet expedition operations rooms in order to manage Expedition Squadrons, market access, by building trading hub terminals, and of course, the vessel hangar bay.

This is all a lot of continuous fun and it just required some gaming time in order to achieve it and enjoy the experience it had to offer.

This, I will STRESS, was intended for an individual to enjoy.

The critical issue that will determine who gets to have fun with this and who has to be excluded and let down all depends on Fdev's careful attention to making the Fleet Carriers work BOTH in single play and multiplay. So far, all I've seen is group activities leading the evolution of this game and though I love the incentive and all, I can't help feeling like the quiet stranger, stood at the back of the room at the party. I don't feel comfortable playing this game, getting griefed every 5 minutes, losing everything I spent my precious, (little), free time I have between work and RL stuff. I much rather prefer to play closed sessions with friends but that's very rarely, most of the time I'm solo play, because I love that. It's MY TIME, rest after hard work.. play space games, fly around space doing sciencey things, shooting pirates landing on planets, discovering planets - having fun!!!

All I would like to see, even before this Fleet carrier thing was a thing, is to be able to have more than 5 poxy ships to fly in the game at any one time. ALSO, having to go to the destination I want to teleport my ships to, then having to wait for them in real time (ok I don't actually mind it that much but it's an unwanted mechanic to be honest, it just degrades fun and breeds tedium and repetetive tedium at that). That is really restricting the game's progress and potential to grow for me.

In fact, regardless of this carrier's properties, one thing that should DEFINITELY be improved upon is the whole logistics of moving the ships around; I think that you should interact somehow with a User Interface, so let's say that it happens in the Galactic map tab. It could even SHOULD, even be in the carrier itself, providing access to frame-shift hyper-jumps to a plotted destination that you just made whilst stood in that carrier!!! You should be able to move the carrier/starport around from the comfort of your ship, using the galactic navigation interface. Currently, you have to actually go to where you want things to move to, which seems caveman, stone-age tech... clunky and basic. (sorry I don't mean to offend, just being factual with the designs, and constructive regarding development) :)

One thing I would see as a possibility is to introduce several forms of fleet transport and storage, so that players can choose according to their playstyle:

Multiplayer options:
Fleet carrier ships for Squadron wing players, Damage control (but NOT destructible carriers, all that money needed to buy one again? Or even the insurance could be a thing? Maybe they could be used for PVP? Would multiplayers like that? Maybe they could have challenges to reach milestones, in order to impress certain alien races that might let them engineer their carriers to perform in certain ways to suit their squadron's play style? Perhaps massive powerful turrets could be installed, to make them almost like battle cruisers?

Single player options:
Stations that require building first, for long term intricate micro-management single players who like tasks, challenges and to take their time playing with it, BUILDING IT, like Lego; The player themselves, ALONE, determining colours, room layout, structure layout, etc etc. The store could potentially sell different things here for Fdev, helping to keep income generation go towards maintaining quality and a future for the game, by offering decoration outfit styles, materials, rooms, decor, operations modules, such as Shipyard maintenance, so that things can move along more smothly around the galaxy...

These are just ideas, I hope Fdev works towards providing fair and inclusive content for ALL players alike. Fair and free to have fun is all I want everyone to enjoy in Elite, not become subject to discrimination by being excluded from things, like has happened before in this game. Deep scars, deep scars... take a long time to heal.

Concerning space travel: As carriers do not seem to be able to supercruise and jump targets are selected via the galactic map:
  • does this mean it would directly Jump to any selectable entity in system maps (planets, rings, stations)?
  • if so it could be sent directly to Hutton Orbital?
  • can we sent it to signal sources or only static entities (see above)?
  • if a commander places the carrier at any one station, is this then blocked for other player carriers?
I see lots of potential but also many situations to be handled in code ...
Question: @Paige Harvey

Can the FC jump into an un-explored system or do we have to explore ahead then call it to us?

No I don't, I have about 2.3 Bill is all. I think this amount would give the commander some sort of accomplishment in achieving the goal instead of having Frontier hand the carrier to the players on a silver platter. Cheers
HA
I have half that. A real surprise that anyone can get one now.
I'll have plenty time before the 2020 release to really make it worth my while.

  • Schedule jumps from the Galaxy Map when you want and from wherever you are in the galaxy.
It seems that we won't be able to actually ''pilot'' the ships as we do all our ''normal'' ships. It will almost certainly be a case of; ''place the ''Carrier'' on the desired destination in the Galaxy Map'' and probably click a button .....and it will traverse to the nominated Star System as long as it's within the 500 Ly range. ..... and Hey Presto! Your Carrier arrives at your nominated destination where you can access your carried ships... ready to launch etc. etc.... (A game mechanic similar to the current ''Ship Transfer'' but able to interact with said ''Carrier'' at it's start and end points?????)
Who knows what sort/s of interactive ''Carrier Interface Screens'' we will have but pretty certain it won't be a hands-on flight deck unless of course they do actually allow ''normal space'' maneuvering! N.B. We never see Capital Ships moving once they have popped out of their black FSD transit clouds.:censored:

You forgot to highlight the part where FDev says you will be able to schedule the jump. This is almost guaranteed to mean it will only ever jump on Thursday's server update. Fun. Umm...

That just leaves this “Unique” fuel. Clearly this isn’t the stuff our little ships run on, so is it safe to assume this will be some manner of collectible item, requiring either cargo space aboard a small ship, or a Material or similar sort of stored good.

Clearly I don’t expect answers here, but if these could be addressed in either an upcoming release or livestream there would be a lot of happy people around, myself included.

The most sensible way to handle fuel, until or unless the carriers can harvest stars or gas giants themselves, might be to just use the same kind of fuel we use now. These things have 8 large landing pads, for what reason? Is that so people can buy and transport Cutter loads of Hydrogen Fuel by the ton from a commodities market or, to unload multiple Anaconda explo-tankers with 7A scoops?

To me it would make more sense if they did use the same stuff our little ships run on.

[Caveat: Unless they have the new and experimental Thargoid witch-space drives ofc]

If it's dockable it's got to be more persistent than that or you could get all sorts of weird cases. I wouldn't expect the owner needed to be online for anything except ordering jumps and refitting it.

Contributions to the initial purchase would probably have to be by Void Opal transfer, but on the other hand if they're intended to be something which a rich player could afford solo, they're probably not going to be as expensive as the "intended for large-ish squadrons" plan, so it might not be all that necessary.

I would hope anyone who can dock can bring the fuel, or it misses out on a lot of gameplay options.

Conversely, being limited to only one FC per squadron might be fine for a 10-player squadron, but a bit tough for a 400-player squadron. The larger squadrons might well benefit a lot from being able to go for "who's online with a carrier" rather than setting up squadron roles to allow a sufficient range of players to take control.

Similarly the flexibility to send carriers to more than one place at once might be very useful for a big squadron.

And, of course, being easily able to invite allies who aren't in your squadron onto the carriers, whether for a formal joint operation, or simply because one of your friends normally flies with another squadron doing other stuff entirely but is helping you tonight.

So long as they have an easy "allow all squadron members to dock" option for the carriers, this way will probably be better for group play.
Something they may also be considering, given the instancing issues, is to host the carriers on their own hardware and use them as a common networking point for an instance that's capable of mass battles instead of relying on peer to peer. If that's the case, making them indestructible would make sense but that might also make it difficult to place two in the same instance?

The real question is, what function do FDev intend them to perform, given the amount of competition in the space game genre that seem to be leap frogging ahead in content? Carriers may be the shiny facade on a critical infrastructure improvement that has to be in place before, or as a test bed for legs now the Gnosis test has enabled them to purge the megaship bugs?

This is patch what, 5 point something in a game that's always been intended to reach a version 10? If you've ever watched a new commercial building go up it's still surrounded by scaffolding for quite a while after being just another giant hole in the ground and doesn't get an exterior facade, paint, signage or windows until long after the plumbing and wiring went in, and had to work.

FDev let us in to play on their building site, why am I not surprised some stuff ain't "polished" yet?

To make crew mandatory all they have to do is decrease the gold cost drastically. Then give them the ability to add pips like with a player. People would pay for pips.

BLASPHEMY I'm kinda p!$$3d we were told Panther Clipper was coming, animation teasers were shown/leaked, then we got a load of ships no-one asked for, and now a mobile base.

Ugh, give me more small ships over a panther any day. I dont get the whole Panther Clipper hype at all; it'll suck to fly, and there is nothing else to do with a ship but fly it. Its like suddenly piles of people go:"Man, I love the T9 but I wish it were 5x less agile and a lot slower!".

Ok, not retyping that good (brilliant actually - your loss) idea...

I'm just gonna whinge about the stupid forum smiley thing crashing my browser!
